Ukraine shoots down 36 drones from overnight Russian attacks

Ukraine said on Thursday (May 25) it had shot down all 36 Iranian-made drones launched by Russia in overnight attacks which it said probably targeted critical infrastructure and military facilities.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said it had been an "uneasy night". Ukrainian joint forces commander Serhiy Nayev has visited air defence troops.
Army video released on Thursday showed Nayev with soldiers who operate German-made ‘Gepard’ self-propelled anti-aircraft gun.
They also released video purporting to show a drone being shot down over the Kyiv night sky.
Reuters was not able to independently verify the location of the footage nor the date it was filmed.
Since last October, Moscow, which launched its full-scale invasion in February last year, has regularly sent waves of drones to attack targets in Ukraine. Although they are slow, drones are cheaper and more expendable than advanced missiles.
"The enemy likely aimed to attack critical infrastructure and military facilities in the western regions of the state," the Ukrainian air force said on Telegram.
It said Iran-made Shahed 136 and Shahed 131 drones had been used.
The head of Kyiv's military administration said the capital had come under attack by several waves of drones but that all had been shot down. He said it was the 12th attack on Kyiv this month.

Yes but you can't compare it with WW2 technology. The Gepard is a relict from the cold war it was developed in the 60s It's already a computerized system and that's the only weakness. The computer is old and glitches sometimes if you don't know exactly how to treat it.

It's quite interesting. It's a cold war vehicle, developed against Helicopters and other aerial threats against Nato tanks at close range (that's why it's a mounted on a Leopard chassis, it had to keep up with the units it was intended to protect). That usage became obsolete when manned aircraft became capable of indentifing, targeting and destroying anything that points a radar at them. Amazing to see that this "old" technology now proves to be very useful against new technology (uav's).

amazing, great that the iron cat developed in the 60´s is pretty useful in Ukraine and protects Ukrainian people and infrastructure from the terror of the Russian regime. Also ammunition supply issues are resolved, Rheinmetall in Germany will produce the 35 mm rounds in Germany from July on (new barrells included, Switzerland is not a reliable partner, when it comes to defence), 300.000 rounds are promised to Ukraine. And more Gepards are coming soon I think some more 15 units, plus the very new Skynex system from Rheinmetall, which is one step ahead of the Gepard. So all the best to Ukraine, fingers crossed here for your counter offence!! ❤

Probably also good against low flying aircrafts as well. Russia is running out of smart bombs, so they need to fly low and close to their targets to be able drop their bombs anywhere near them. But the only problem with that is that this will make them vulnerable to manpads and Gepards. And one bullet from a rifle hitting a sensitive part of a plane like the hydralic system would be enough to bring down a multi-million dollar jet.

@nattygsbord
@nattygsbord 11 ай бұрын
They are retired, but the concept had not been tested in war. And especially not in a modern drone war. And even if this vehicle is old will lessons be brought from it which can be useful for the design of the next generation of AA tanks. I will say that I didn't expect them to be so useful and effective as they have become in this war. When they was sent were russia no yet trying to kill civilians with iranian drones. And then I expected its job to rather be to kill russian soldiers with spraying cannon fire into them like a gigantic machine gun bunker on tracks. And I also expected it to escort trucks and tanks driving on a road against low flying aircrafts and russian attack helicopters. Something which probably surface-to-air missiles do better. But in assymetric warfare were missiles are more expensive than the Iranian drones they shot down this can become problematic. Russia can mass produce cheap drones while Ukraines have to waste a limited amount of expensive missiles that costs 20x times more. But then you can shot down those shahed drones with a machine gun burst that is 1000 times cheaper than the drone. Then it is russia who once again lose from this terror bombings. Gepard have therefore become one of the most important weapons of Ukraine.

it is best for drones cause it's cheap compared to guided missile launchers like NASAMS, Soviet Union had similar system ZSU-23-4 Shilka I wonder is Ukraine still has those, we can see only Gepards but never ZSU-23-4, Soviet Union built over 6500 ZSU's a lot more than Gepards and they fought in many wars against Israel, US in Iraq etc. Many post soviet countries should probably still have them. There is pre war video of them in Ukrainan military "ЗСУ-23-4 «Шилка» 10 ОГШБр ЗСУ [Cічень 2021]"

How many rounds in a burst?

Depends on the mode, the maximum would be 12 per gun (thus 24 in total), against drones it would typically be shorter bursts.
