I came from California when I went to Gomel and Minsk in September 1999. I never felt unwelcome for even a second! Gomel was like a Christmas card... beautiful and decorative. Same experience here when I visited Kyiv 5 years ago. I exited the metro-station near my hotel after twelve at night: the lights on the underpass had been turned off shortly after I made it to the station (I was saying goodbye to a friend and walked with her to the metro to say my final goodbye). And so, the underpass was scary dark when I got out: I really opted to go up the first stairway and cross the road above, but as it did not feature any lights, I was also hessitant. And then I saw a woman in front of me walk towards that same darkness, seemingly without any fear. And so I followed her example and just walked through this dark walkway. And then I came up to street level again: the large L'kava café next to the underpass was still open and people outside were having their smoke and laughing. I felt a lot safer than in Amsterdam, where I live closeby. It's maybe down to the fact that I don't understand most of Ukrainian or Russian language, but usually your gut feeling also tells you if someone is talking about you or not, especially if you keep your ears open for intonation.

As an American, I worry more about traveling in the USA then I do in countries like Hungary, Poland, Belarus or Ukraine. I see far more drinking in the USA then in Central and Eastern Europe. As for the USSR, it died before people 30 and under were born. As for the checks of passports and such, check out the USA and our good old Patriot Act if you want a real taste of a soviet union type system.

So yes there are safer countries, but many are less safe including Ukraine and Belarus which are in top 20 of most dangerous. Just facts and statistics. Now I'm fairly wealthy and live in a very safe neighborhood, city, State. However if I was poor, lived in a bad area of Oakland, Chicago, Detroit yes it would be more dangerous than the small Ukrainian town Olga lives. I never said America is the safest country in the world, but it is a large country with out fear of war and has laws and fairly low corruption. Also we have 2nd Amendment. I can protect myself. Completely true about finding love as a foreigner. Though I didn't go to Kyiv for that reason, I can say that other people immediately got that idea. They quickly thought that the (female!) friend who had invited me to her country after I met her in my country (The Netherlands) had made it and had married this rich Western bloke and I was just visiting her country and family. Especially at the Kyiv Expo, where I was just taking some video-shots of all the market-stalls inside one of the big buildings, this was very strong. A woman at the Lviv Liquor stand offered me a sample (and I really don't like alcohol ;) ) and started talking to me in either Ukranian or Russian, but I (of course) did not understand her. My friend was close by, so I asked her for help. When she came to me, the woman than looked at me and back to my friend and got this 'ahhh, I see...' look on her face and said something I did not understand fully, but by the tone of her voice and her pointing finger, waving back and forth between my friend and me like 'you two are together right?', really made it clear that she kind of congratulated my friend on finding 'a wealthy one from The West.'

A person just needs to be smart and aware of their surroundings. The best advise to anyone that travels abroad... don't be an arrogant a**hole. Be respectful and understanding. Yes, ladies, "big city girls" (as I call them) are in every country of the world. They will date a man only for money. Learn the red flags and be aware of them. The comment about the mafia was great. ))) In St. Petersburg, I would exchange my currency from "the boys in the corner". They had a good rate. ))) I hope to visit Odessa soon.

As a foreigner in Ukraine I’d say that - Ukrainians are not always the drunkest people (there are some other competing nations) - Mafia? The rise of technology has opened new doors for Ukrainian men but I personally think it still exists low key. However, I disagree with what Olga said, no crime rates what so ever is simply because there are no statistics especially related to foreigners. The police department has definitely changed but I still don’t see assimilation with foreigners that much. - As for the women, before a couple of years ago the answer was yes. You’d be an easy catch now that there’s a lot of foreigners in Ukraine and competition is slightly on the rise.

From what I understand drinking became more of an issue after the USSR fell apart thinking the world was at an end. I would be scared too if everything I ever knew or had went away over night and would probably resort to drinking for a while.

Wow!!! Slavic girl doing her reaserch before posting on YT! Good job Ulyana! Also great to hear proper English;) Kyiv does look Soviet because of architecture, like the main Square. It's just modernized, like on huge gray Soviet building you have colorful billboard and McDonald's in it;) Belarus is SUPER clean, VERY safe country. Because Mafia is the government! So you are totally safe unless you want to deal with the officials. Anyways... Слава Україні! Жыве Беларусь! P.S. Well... when it comes to golddiggers if we were to do some statistics...

Alcoholism is pretty high all over the place, but especially in America I feel. I think drinking in Slavic countries is increased during special occasions and it is more cultural to drink during these times. Us Americans consider the weekends to be enough reason to get crazy drunk.

Usually colder countries (weather wise) are more likelly to bigger consumption of alcoholic drinks. by the way Olga said it right, Ulyana is a very pretty girl.... I´m Brazilian and would love some day to go visit both Ukrane and Belorus, I really think I´ll find interesting people over there (culturaly wise)..

Interesting to hear Belarus pronounced [by someone I suspect knows the proper pronunciation]: here in the U.S., we hear it [if at all: our news media sux] said "bel a ROOS," vs her "BEL a russ." Good to know...

It is true about Swedes and alcohol. We actually had starvation a few hundred years back because all the potatoes were used to make vodka. Now you can only buy alcohol from a national store chain only open during the day and not on Sundays.

@ 2:30 -- The Nordic countries [Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark] all seem to have seriously high taxes on alcohol as a means of limiting its deleterious social f/x. In consequence, whenever someone from those countries goes outside they seem to drink to excess since the drinks are sooo cheap compared to back home [Not all, of course, but it only takes a few who get carried away to get noticed...]

After living in Spain, Korea, Greece (Athens/Crete), and Yemen, I've never felt unsafe at any time. Even in Yemen, as an American, I only had positive interactions with the people there. Sure, it helped that I spoke Arabic, but unless they approached me, the Yemenis didn't know that. They were just very accepting. Honestly, I feel less safe in America than I ever did living in a foreign country. I think that the energy you put out in the world comes back to you. If you go to a foreign country and are respectful of the people and their culture, they will notice and return that respect back to you.

I get that Islam wont give you any sex so you have to go to slavic countres but People get angry with regular tourists and give them sh!t for hours and makes it a bad place to visit. It attracts the garbage into your country and ruins it. This is why i avoid some asian countries sorry to say
