They’re very brave to fly those missions. We started doing them in 1965 and they were called iron hand. The "Iron Hand" is a metaphor to the steady hand and nerves of steel it took for pilots to fly directly at the radar-emitting anti-aircraft missile sites while the radar-seeking missiles flew down to destroy the target.God bless those aviators.

They surprisingly survived the early weeks of the war, partly because the Russian bombers didn't find the Ukrainian ground based air defenses (NATO Awacs always snitched on them so the vehicles got out of the way in time). Partly because they did their utmost to avoid engaging Russian fighters and air defenses. They knew they couldn't sortie like they would like to do. But this is changing because of HIMARS and HARM missiles thinning out the Russian air defense systems.

It takes at least 6 months minimum to become effective flying a new plane. Currently, Ukrainian pilots are simulator training for the hope of receiving A10s, but for the A10 to be effective in Ukraine they NEED an effective air defense which I understand they are now expanding. Otherwise the new planes get shot down.

Ideally though you know what type of radar is hitting you ( from your RWR radar warning receiver, what type of launchers work with that radar, and thus, you know the kind of missiles it can fire at you. You can then use the data and intel we have collected on those types of missiles in combination with field data collected (like range to target from your radar) to quite closely estimate how closely you can fly while still being safe. A missile only has so much fuel and a limited range. So if you collect data you can fly right into their launch range while easily having enough time to escape, rinse repeat until the SAM is out of missiles. Obviously this isnt a perfect solution, and there are ways to counter this strategy but with the right information in advance and a pilots ability to make use of that information efficiently you can get the job done at with greatly reduced risk.

I love this guy and his realism is off the charts he says to learn to fly a F15 (if you are a TRAINED combat pilot) is 3-6 MONTHS He doesn't say its not possible but he knows it takes time. Thank you Sir! EDIT SLAVA

He is one of many that have been flying with the F15C and D unit from the California air guard going back to 2014 he not bragging a lot of them allready have stick time in the F15 and same with the F15 drivers a lot of them have been flying in the Mig 29 a USAF Col and F15 driver was killed in a mig29 a few years ago and thd Mig drivers have been putting that training to very good use

Combing US missiles with mig29 is a formiddable move as the MIG29 is one of the greatest jets ever built her only weakness being her weapon systems. This is a bold move.

It's most likely that Poland showed Ukraine how to install US missiles on MIG-29 because in 2009 Poland changed all their MIG-29's to fire western/NATO made weapons and Poland also installed NATO avionics and much more powerful radars in their MIG-29's. I actually think Poland gave Ukraine few of their MIG-29'S because there was an interview with the Polish defense minister and he said that Poland is only giving MIG-29 parts to Ukraine and the reporter asked if Ukraine could put together a MIG-29 out of all those parts and the Polish defense minister just winked and started laughing. So i think Poland is giving Ukraine the aircraft but they take them a part and drive them over the border into Ukraine where Ukraine rebuilds them.

As Taiwanese, I guess we can understand the Ukrainian pilots. The truth is we can only fight our invaders the way America wants us to fight. Taiwan pilots have higher death rate during drills not due to technique, maintenance, or experience issues, but the fighter jet isn't updated enough or too old because the US won't sell us the latest ones. HARM missiles definitely help, but even just a few F-16s or F-15s would make a world of difference. I know the US has retrofitted some F-16s (QF-16s I believe) as drones for target practice, they could be useful as the near suicidal decoys or even in actual air-to-air combat.

What they are describing are "Wild Weasel" tactics, as employed by the US airforce for a long time. One aircraft would try its best to get shot at, preferably in a situation were he can still evade that missile, while another aircraft then moves in to kill the air defense station. It's even better to find them before they fire, but that's easier said then done.

@@theorncampbell4432 Training pilots is the smallest problem. They'd also need to train the mechanics and ground crews and so on. And establish a logistics train. Airpower is too complicated, there are still more lower hanging fruits like additional HIMARS systems and those HARM missiles. The jets may come in time... But I figure it takes at least a year or two for getting this to work effectively.

If the HARM is adapted, then other missiles are too. This shows the effects of HIMARs/M270 against S300/400 systems.

Nope, HARMs are easier to adapt because they do most of their work themselves and can even be used as a sensor system to stream data to the aircraft avionics. Other missiles, Air to Air or Air to ground, often need much more "help" from the avionics package, for example to provide a radar lock. Russian made aircraft, especially the older ones flown by Ukraine don't have a lot in terms of computers on board or inside the cockpit. And it's harder to interface those. They'll probably use additional, small, US made computers to talk to the HARMS from the cockpit.

I'm ashamed to call myself American. How is it that we can't send Ukraine fighter jets? You. Know the current situation over there? It's a damn shame we won't send them long range missiles. Look at himars!!!! They are a game changer. They need to send them old f16s and migs. Also send longer range missiles. I'm really ashamed we have this technology and won't send it to them. Well, it's not that simple. Providing fighter jets means a new level of geopolitical responsibility. A step like this is not to be taken lightly as Russia could view it as a further infraction of their *ahem* sovereignty. Ukraine could, in theory, carry out medium to long-range strikes deep into Russian territory if they get systems like the F-16C or F-15E. Contesting air superiority has always been a tricky subject. Yet there are talks about providing Ukraine with A-10s and other types to enable them to defend their own territory more effectively.

@John Grigg the A10 is comparable to the FROGFOOT close air support aircraft. But offering the Ukrainian an aircraft allready phased out makes no sense. But I believe it is not that easy to down in one shot. Not even manpads.
