I use a leather plectrum too they are firm enough to pluck but flexible enough to strum without that twangy sound plastic makes. I make all of mine by cutting up old belts to the desired size and shape.

Brilliant! Thanks for the reassurance on finger use. I could never use a pick or plectrum as you call it - it just sounds horrible when I try, but I thought I should give it a more determined effort and look at different types. This video is exactly what I was looking for,. All together in one place. Thank you..

Thank you for this. I have been playing 14 months and in the first couple of weeks used a felt pick that came with the Ukulele. Wasn't keen and soon dropped the plectrum or pick. Interesting hearing the sound of your favourite leather plectrum. It sounded pretty good. I might just invest in one .. just in case. Thank you for covering subjects that are not often covered by Ukulele teachers. I appreciate that.

I use various picks felt and leather for uke's, Dunlop Jazz3 mainly for electric guitar and mandolin lots of different ones for acoustic depending what style I'm attempting to play .I wish I could get some of those big triangular tortex ones with a cork grip not seen those for years🇬🇧👍

Haven't seen any cork grip picks Bill but they sound interesting. My preference is leather but I'll use a felt pick in an emergency (not that I use picks much)

I share my own but recent experience on the use of a plectrum. I am sometimes playing a 38mm nylon Dunlop pick. I believe it is the thinnest. It is pleasant because it is very flexible, sensitive and I get a very nice sound, even close to the sound of the fingers. It allows all the nuances of touch. Sound volume and speed can be well measured. It is to be tested. L. from Belgium.

As a Novice its reassuring that you like the Leather Plectrum! (Having ended up with a fair selection of Nylon,Felt,Plastic and Leather Plectrums) I didnt mean to do this, but in order to find out what was what, this is what resulted! It might be handy if instead of a selection of thickness of usually Felt or Plastic you were sent one of each type for working out what is for you! I will try to persevere with Thumb and Finger, especially as its the finger tips that seem to be far softer than I imagined they were after 60+ years of general use! Really enjoying your output and dearly wish I could get to your school ( Maybe post Vacine)! The Ukulele has saved my Sanity as due to Illness Ive been effectively Cast out from Society, but I am at last beginning to recognise some of the noise I make as Tunes! After giving up the Recorder as a mistake at 12,this has been like Magic! What a great Instrument they are!I think of them as the 'Jack Russell' of instruments as they are little and full of character! Both arw now my constant companions!

Hi Peter, glad the video reassured you. I don't ofetn use the (always leather)plectrum BUT I do when I need to and yes, keep going with finger and thumb but don't be frightened to use the lick when needed. I took me a while of trying different ones.

Hi Denise, I think the trick with using a plectrum is to be very light and almost use it as an extenstion of your fingers / hand rather than trying to move it sepertately. If I get a chance I'll try and do a lesson on it.

Hi Ken, have you tried a leather pick. I hate the plastic ones and find generally the felt ones are very stiff but once a leather pick becomes softer over time, they can play quite a subtle sound. I very rarely play with a pick these days unless I really have to.
