A new design that improves the dynamic response of a ship as it travels through waves? How better to clearly show how _with a series of stills_ .

It isn't new design, but "forgotten" old one. Similar bow design was wide spread all over Europe. Look at vikings or slavic ships with similar bow about 1000 years ago, yes, it was narrow to fit their raider ships purpose, not so wide like we see for cargo and supply ships in the video above.

I've seen a video presentation, of these ships, in rough seas.... they do plow through the waves, rather than ride upon them. (Sorry, I cant recall just where I saw it. I think it was in technology group, in FB, I once belonged to)

Now, that's thinking outside the box on many levels. Has anyone thought about downsizing this design to a more personal-sized craft rather than the commercial-sized ones in these clips? It certainly looks like a good design that could be used for many purposes and applications.
@Tomm9y2 жыл бұрын
Many of the plumb bow designs have incorporporated some of the concepts. However for light displacement vessels (Volume v Weight) there are different considerations, as the deceleration etc. may be less when riding over a wave.

@TPQ19806 жыл бұрын
This was likely a product of multiple fluid dynamics simulations that tested various permutations of bow design. You're probably smart enough to be involved at some level in the process. Go back to pre-computer days and yeah, most of us would be too dumb to innovate most modern developments. Took real genius and inspiration back then. Now its more about time and processing power and soon human input in the process will be minimal. Tools designing tools.

And many of the early dreadnoughts themselves. Many battleships andbatlecruisers built before and during WWI had very similar "ram" bow designs like what is pictured. They were olower down, but that provided the added benefit of behaving both like this, and the asvantages of the bulbous bow.
@InventPeace14 жыл бұрын
TIME 1:46 Looks like 2 bottom halves together, I guess like they said the above water line shape reduces wave slaps & pitch acceleration/deceleration to keep speeds up or power needs down : less up & dn displacement friction/drag = more forward movement.

These vessels were initially designed for Offshore Support Vessels operating in the North Sea. Rugged vessels, with tight frame spacing below the waterline. A bit overkill for Gulf of Mexico operations...ROI is lower, and day rate is higher. As long as Oil Major companies continue overpaying to suck oil out of the ground under the oceans, then it’s no problem at all. These are engineering marvels. Typically great welding, depending on the constructing shipyard. Bulb iron stiffeners, instead of angle iron. Dynamic Positioning Systems. Bridge layout is very effective for operations on the stern. And some of the best crew quarters in the world’s marine fleet.

While _technically_ that does show a two second glimpse of "below the waterline" it is straight on from the side only and is impossible to determine the shape of the hull (cross sections in ANY of the three planes).
