In my opinion, Dressed to Kill is underrated, and Destroyer is overrated. There's some gems on Dressed to Kill, including their signature song, but yet no one really talks about it.

While I have no issues with Dynasty, (the first KISS album I ever purchased) Unmasked is, without a doubt, the band’s most underrated album. If you don’t like KISS’ take on early-eighties pop, fine... but at least try to judge the album on its musical merit, instead of blindly lashing-out against the style in which the songs were presented. I urge you to give this album a genuine try... (you have my permission to skip the sleepy dud, Shandi) After a few listens, the irresistible and abundant hooks found throughout this album might just change your long-held opinions. Unmasked might not represent KISS at their hard-rockin’ best, but it’s certainly easy on the ears and a whole lot of fun.

Dynasty is one of my favorite KISS albums, its really overlooked and idc if it gets hated on. It's a good album with good gems in it and personally I really love it 👌

What made me realize that is he praises the Creatures of The Night album (it should be praised), but my point is that he didn't even mention War Machine when talking about great songs from that album. One of my all-time favorite KISS songs, just so heavy and badass for that time period of KISS.

I have got to add that I am a fan of "The Elder". A lot of other KISS fans agree that it is different from all other KISS albums, but also agree that it is really something special.

One of the things I loved about Kiss circa 1978-1982 was that they experimented with so many genres of music during that time. And the music they made still sounded like Kiss (I think Ace Frehley had a lot to do with that), and they usually knocked it out of the park. Even Creatures of the Night sounded nothing like any prior Kiss album. The Elder has some of their best work: "The Oath," "Dark Light," "Only You," "Under the Rose," "A World Without Heroes," and "I" are all great songs. If anything, The Elder comes closer to the more traditional heavy sound they were known for than did Unmasked.

The elder was interesting. Did you catch the backmasking in the middle of “Mr. Blackwell”? That record could’ve been a dark, spooky, haunted departure for Kiss but yup - they gave up on it.

Creatures continues to get better with age. I remember when it came out in 82 kiss was at a low point in the states, most of the public ignored it, but when I heard it on the radio I couldn’t get over Eric‘s Carrs drumming and the sound production, it was that good, dark and heavy. I couldn’t believe it was the same band that just put out umasked and the elder. it was the only album I bought after love gun at the time of its release.

KISS went through some real tough times making great albums like Creatures, Asylum and Revenge but made them in a period when people saw KISS as a "has been" band. They actually made their best albums in their most difficult times, which is kind of ironic. It seems like KISS need to struggle to make great music.

The Elder deserves to be up there around 12 or 11. "I" and the "The Oath" are two very underrated Kiss songs. Everybody dismisses this album just because of the stupid soundtrack elements. To me that's what makes it special, it's a non-Kiss album with some great Kiss songs on it.

Rock & Roll Over came out and I was in a Woolworths with friends and did not know it was out . Saw it bought it and said I am going home to listen to it and they thought why ? We just got here . The Elder, Creatures of the Night, and Lick It Up is my favorite era, or span of albums. I was just starting to listen to music as a teenager at the time of those albums. It seems that each and every music lover has an affinity towards, and tends to listen mostly to what they listened to at the time of their first exposure to music for the rest of their lives. I say that because I still listen to those albums today. Each one of those albums can be interchangeably be listed as my number one. In other words, I can't decide which of those I like best! However, I still listen to and love all of the KISS albums, of course!

Most internet millennials that bash it have never even gave it a listen. Hot in the shade is also under-rated. If there is any demographic of KISS fans who appreciate The Elder, it is the hipster millennials. The album was universally panned by the boomer/gen-x fans, until it began to gain some traction in the mid-90s... Thanks to the Internet, not despite as the OP claims. The majority of folks who make up the two eldest generations of KISS fans (including myself) still view The Elder as a significant error and setback for the band. However, for those who feel the need to “buck the trends” before they can sincerely get behind any musical work, and more importantly, validate that choice as being superior due to their “refined taste”, Music From the Elder is easily the best choice in the entire KISS catalogue. The Elder’s unique combination of a ridiculous fantasy tale, mostly dreadful songs, (“I” is the exception here) and nearly universal rejection... by fans, critics and even the band itself, make it the perfect choice of those who can’t seem to agree with anyone on anything whatsoever.

Yup. Their best 1976 album is RARO, and it's their BEST ALBUM too: simple, stripped down, great songs with great melodies that rock, Eddie Kramer does a fantastic job with production (but NOT over production), and the band hits on all cylinders, putting out its finest effort ever.

The Elder isn’t overlooked. All KISS fans are keenly aware of that abomination. It isn’t a case of being “far removed” or “superior”. It’s simply a case of a band flailing, trying to grab onto anything they think might bring them even a small fraction of the success they once enjoyed. The result was exactly what one would expect from a band in a state of panic... A terrible album who’s legacy has not improved over time.

To me, Unmasked is their worst classic or 3/4 lineup album by far. Awful light pop songs for the most part. Yes, that's correct Alex. Unmasked is WAY better than Crazy Nights...by far. First of all, in 1980, people still didn't know what KISS looked like without their make up on so they still had a little bit of that mystique going on. And, even thou the songs on Unmasked may have been very "pop" oriented and somewhat "shallow" sounding compared to their earlier albums, the songs do have a lot more personality, are much more different from one another and are (for some strange reason) much more memorable than almost ANYTHING on Crazy Nights. If you play the guitar and sing, take this test...sit down and play and sing through the entire Unmasked album, then the next day sit down and play and sing through the Crazy Nights album and I think you'll understand what I'm getting at. Unmasked just has so many more memorable hooks. I'm not saying Unmasked is a great album in general, But Crazy Nights (to me) is just KISS at their creative worst...by far.

cooltheengines I'm afraid i personally don't see the 'wonder' and 'greatness' of unmasked. For a band that hadn't taken the makeup off yet to do an album called Unmasked was a strange decision that didn't work for me. Crazy Nights i think i have such a love for because Stanley's vocals on his tracks are ridiculous! He is reaching high E's and it's superb to hear. Tracks like Crazy Crazy Nights, My Way, Reason to Live and Turn on the night, his vocals are ridiculous! I will concede the Gene songs are weak but then again i also thought his songs were weak on unmasked. I would certainly place Crazy Crazy nights at about 12 and Unmasked at 19 or 20.

Carnival is a great, great album. It may not be a typical "Kiss" album, but it's great straight through. Way better than Revenge (no "stripper" song) and I'm not even a grunge fan.

Glad to see 'Creatures of the Night' get the respect it deserves in this list. Anyone who thinks it should be ranked lower is a KISS original lineup purist who thinks Ace Frehley and Peter Kriss were the heart and soul of the band (Way wrong). I would have ranked 'Revenge' a bit higher but I'll put myself out there and call bias as it was the album that made me fall in love with the band as I was in 8th grade when it came out. However, I do agree that 'Destroyer' belongs at the top. Even though it may have caused too much disruption in the original lineup for them to ever get over (Bob Ezrin literally had to teach Pete how to drum and almost gave the guy a nervous breakdown) but the finished product is untouchable outside of the Alive albums. Good list.

Vember X I loved Animalized. Lick it Up too. I would not dear to rank all the Albums. They all had good songs. The only two I did not like were Psycho Circus and Rock N Roll Over, but again not every song was bad. There are some songs that don't work. But as far as everything else no complaints. Still a KISS fan, and will be til the day I die.
