Of all my VH albums, I played Fair Warning the most. Gutsy, hardcore, in-your-face rock from beginning to end. My vote for #1. After that one they just tried to hard to be radio-friendly.

+MrDunedon Thank you!! I couldn't agree more. So what if there are many covers?? Covers aren't necessarily inferior! Look at all the covers of blues songs giants of rock like the Stones and Led Zeppelin did, and nobody criticizes them for it. Eddie's synth of overdub guitars on Dancing in the Street is absolute genius, and they absolutely ROCKED Oh Pretty Woman. So they took a little break from songwriting. That's ok. The result is still fantastic.

You can´t consider an album with cover songs among the best...it would be against the appreciation of creativity, besides, the guys from VH have said that some of the songs in Diver Down suck, specially "Dancing in the streets".

I love the first album. That's the one that turned me into a fan but I have to admit that 1984 was Van Halen at their finest! All their most well known songs are on it (Jump, Panama and Hot For Teacher) making it their most successful. That's when you wanted to be a Van Halen fan. Even the record companies noticed that and try to duplicate that with a zillion hair bands from LA. Van Halen started that trend really with 1984!

Diver Down may be the least impressive VH album with Roth but I think it's his best vocal performance. He showed his range of styles with songs like Secrets, Big Bad Bill and The Full Bug. He takes a lot of hits for his voice but I love the unique character in his singing, especially on this album.

Like most artists, Eddie recorded his best stuff on the first few VH albums. People conveniently forget this when they bash the Sammy era. Dave didn't have much left in the tank either and it showed in his solo career.

I'd tend to put 'Different Kind of Truth' slightly higher if it *sounded* better -- in terms of the mixing/mastering. It just sounds messy, and the solid songs are kinda lost in the bad mix. But yeah, it's not a bad album, by any means. Certainly much better than I expected it would be. But I can tell by this list that you're obviously a DLR fan first and foremost. But man...5150 is a damn good album, and it's definitely in my top 3 VH albums.

If artistically "Fair Warning" is their best album, why is it lower than VH #1? Women and Children was incredible, and under-rated. I would bump VH1 to #2 and FW to #1, with WACF in the #3 spot. Other than that, you nailed it. Lol

+Boomclack I would bump off Diver Down and 1984 to the bottom of the list because diver down just trully sucked and van halen completely sold out on 1984,and honestly,there were only a few really good tracks on there.The sammy hagar years are really just ok,i agree with 51 something being the best album of that period.Honestly,If i were to put out a best van halen albums list,only the first 4 on the list.I also dont know what they mean by 1984 being the best instrumentally,and using bad for the teacher as an example.BAD FOR THE TEACHER.HA!That solo on there is probably the worst van halen solo ever recorded.Othere than that,this list IS really good,and I agree with your placement.

....and 'A different kind of truth' should be higher, because most of us did not expect any new VH with Roth. Sure a lot is from their WB demo, but it's a blistering album! 'Stay frosty' for example is a VERY fun song and is like a sequel to 'Ice cream man.'

When VH rolls into town, no one grouses for Hagar's hits....though he was amazing. VH have never made a crap album. They can play ANY song from ANY album in the Roth era and we will rock like the cradle. Love to Sammy ... great voice!

Fair Warning is the Best of the Roth era albums without major hits. Best guitar tone and attitude. An album cant just stand up on hits alone. Van Halen II and Fair Warning are epic albums.

The song "Eruption" was actually Eddie's take on the opening guitar riffs of a song by Cactus from their 1970 self-titled debut album: a song called "Let Me Swim". And that's not the only way that Cactus and Van Halen intertwine: both "I'm The One" and "Hot For Teacher" we're musically based on Cactus's fast-paced rendition of the old blues song "Parchman Farm", which Cactus played in a way that was inspired by 10 Years After's "I'm Going Home".

My opinion don't kill me: 12 VH III (Heard a few tracks but sorry Cherone is a bad fit) 11. Balance (Like the reviewer said you can tell the chemistry is gone) 10. F.U.C.K. (Better than I remembered. Top Of The World is personal favorite) 9.) ADKOT (Roth Vocals are passable and the chemistry is strong with the new lineup) 8) Diver Down (The Full Bug is a great track, Pretty Woman is awesome but too many covers) 7) OU812 (Mine All Mine is great and so is AFU. Experimentation works) 6) 5150 (Eddie and the band sound revitalized) 5) VH II (Fun album, and reminds us how important M. Anthony was to the sound) 4) 1984 (Creative Pinnacle of the Roth years, still makes me sad listening to it) 3) Fair Warning (Dark & heavy. Mean Street & Unchained are killer tracks) 2) Van Halen (OMG how can you not have this No. 1, easy it's my list) 1) Women & Children First (My three fav VH songs Everybody Wants Some, Romeo Delight & Take Your Whisky Home) Again we all have our personal choices these are mine. The band wrote much better music with Roth hands down, Hagar however I really feel is the better singer, I saw Van Halen with Roth back in 2012 and Roth's singing was subpar at best, he wasn't even really singing he was just reciting the lyrics and improvising in an attempt at comedy which fell so flat.

I absolutely love all 6 Dave albums, can find at least 6 great songs on each of them. My desert island album would be VH ll. It's the album with which I first got into the band, and, to me, has their strongest material from first song to last......absolutely blew me away when I first heard it, and still does to this day......God Bless The Mighty Van Halen !!!!!!

VHII was my first, and is my fave. If Dance the Night Away were replaced by a stronger, less commercial song, I think more people would rank it higher. And I'm old enough, yet young enough to not have known how many covers there were on Diver Down way back when. I still consider it to be a bit underrated.

I would put A Different Kind of Truth ahead of Diver Down. A Different Kind of Truth was a more satisfying listening experience that rocked from start to finish, maybe one song I would call filler. Diver Down had them goofing around too much with the cover songs and the experimentation.

VH3 has some amazing guitar moments. I actually made an edited version where I removed all of Cherone's vocals (i like the Eddie vocal song) and it's an amazing instrumental record! I personally would put Fair Warning and WACF above 1984 on this list and stick Balance at the very bottom.

Yeah many bands seem to go through this ,the first couple of albums are usually the best people i guess are drawn to pop or stuff you can dance to my self love the heavy metal stuff maybe you have to have a mix im still drawn to the 60's the only thing eddie talks about is clapton or a couple of other bands .but i do dig his playing i like the less popular stuff im finding out ,i really dig fair warning ,rip eddie vanhalen im sure you will be missed.!

Aside the First one, my desert island album will be "Women And Children First", Alex's finest hour, Roth best vocal range, Eddie's playing is on fire and pretty close to Speed Metal on some songs. Also a delicious mix of Ukelele-folk, pop and prog-rock moments. 🤟🤟

Van Halen debut album I have as the 2nd greatest debut album of alltime behind Guns N’ Roses Appetite for Destruction. So it’s def #1 for me. Ain’t Talkin Bout Love is their beat song IMO.

Pretty good list, Its tough to rank a band with two very different lead singers. I would have ranked "Diver Down" near the bottom. I bought it new in 1982 (on vinyl) and it was a huge disappointment after their amazing first 4 albums. A lot of filler cover, only two really great originals ("Hang Em High" and "The Full Bug") and its only 31 minutes. The Hagar albums need a good remastering, especially 5150 and OU812.. Alex was using those lousy electronic drums at the time.

Not much to argue with except I would put A Different Kind of Truth ahead of all the Van Hagar albums of which my favourite is For Unlawful Carnal Knowedge. Diver Down is also a personal favourite of mine so it would be higher. My top 5 would be 1 VH1 2 1984 3 Diver Down 4 VH2 5 Fair Warning

Balance should be higher on the list. I feel it is the most complete album of the Van Hagar Era.

I was seven yrs old when Van Halen released the first album of the same name. All my friends in school were all about Kiss which really never did anything for me personally. My mom let me use my allowance and I bought that first Van Halen Album and wore it out and every album of theirs since. To me 5150 was their best. Even though I was absolutely crushed when Roth left and I at first hated Sammy on 5150. Yrs. have gone by and have to admit 5150 was their master piece. Sammy allowed Eddie to be the perfectionist Eddie is. The album truly is sonic genius and even Eddie credited him for his guitar playing allowing Eddie to play the keyboard during live shows.

Never listened to anything after For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. IMO their first album is flawless along with fair warning being a close second. Never was a huge fan of Diver Down but I didn’t hate it.
