When the high st, was the high st, debenhams, hmv, our price, asda, mr byrite, bhs, marks and spencers, whsmith, all a shadow of their former selves now. Mark and Spencers seems to be suviving over all the rest. We used to eat in debenhams of bhs or have tea there before going xmas shopping. The whole family would assemble and discuss whose going where and getting what. Dad would go get the xmas meat, was just one of many traditions. The high st with argos was where everyone was at with their xmas lists, either that or woolworths. This year, little need to go up the high st, hmv still there, but rest is phone shops, the game store (was gaming), now virtually console or toys. Boots survived, but little else. I still remember it all so well, my first paycheck to buy xmas presents, my first suit from mr byrite, video and cassettes from ourprice/hmv, got my cd player in debenhams (worked there), woolworths for the sweets and toys and games. Argos for the gifts we couldnt get anywhere else. (shavers). We even had a shaver shop, you could get your shaver serviced and a new head put on, rather than the throwaway stuff now. That was only 15 years ago. Crazy how time flies.

@@darrenc2721 I wish to god things were still special at Christmas time. I'm from Stoke-on-Trent and as a kid in the 80s going to Hanley (city centre) was truly a treat. The big multifloor Lewis's department store was a magical place at Christmas! The toy department was huge and there was always loads of stuff being demonstrated. Then there'd be all the colourful Christmas lights and decorations on various roads and buildings all through the town. I miss those times!

Crazy place, love it! The closest one near to us (Longton, Stoke-on-Trent) sold everything from pic n mix to those little Tomos mopeds. Better times.

😄the pic n mix yeah i remember that the sales assitant always let you get away with a little more or you could just pick one or two and eat them...
