Great video. Two quick questions. One for any of those lenses that you talked about do you need a meta booster? Also what should be my first lens with a GH5 for automobile videography?
@itsryanwilkes4 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. No speed booster needed for any of them. For automotive I would think something like a 25 mm prime would be great. The Olympus 25mm f1.8 or panasonic 25 mm f1.7 are both pretty affordable and a good bang for the buck. If you wanted something wider I would look at the Olympus 12mm f2.0
@itsryanwilkes4 жыл бұрын
Just to add to that....you cant go wrong with the Panasonic 12-35 f2.8. It is so versatile and has great stabilization. The only downfall would be lowlight performance compared to those prime lenses I mentioned in my other comment.

Hi dude! first of all congrats for the video review, really interesting 😊 I am a GH5 owner, and I use it both for video and photo. My only two lenses at the moment are the zoom Leica 12-60 (great for run and gun work even if it doesn’t excel anywhere) and the prime Leica 25 f1.4 (I love , for portraits and close ups). I would like to experiment now with something new (both photo and video tbh) and I was thinking at the Leica 08-18 for wider landscapes. Would you recommend it or would you suggest something else to push forward the GH5 “game”?
@itsryanwilkes5 жыл бұрын
Hey mate! I think the 8-18 is a great choice if you shoot a lot of action or landscapes, even architecture and interiors. If you shoot more wildlife I would go for the 35-100 or 100-400. But the 8-18 sounds perfect for you!

Yes either the 12-35 or Olympus 12-40. Depends if you need stabilization or not!
@avtargill6 жыл бұрын
I had the same question except I don't own any lenses at the moment. I'm thinking about picking up a GH5 and most likely just one lens for a while that will allow me to rack focus and focus reliably in general. I haven't heard great things about focus by wire which a lot of these native lenses seem to be all about. I want to primarily shoot interview videos and b-roll to go along with them. Some room for lowlight and shallow depth of field would be nice to have. Would the 12-35mm cover all that or should I go for one of the Voigtlander lenses? 17.5 mm?
@itsryanwilkes6 жыл бұрын
Hi Avtar, thanks for your comment. I would consider the Olympus 12-40. I say that because the focus ring is much more reliable, and you can use autofocus if needed. The voigtlander is amazing for the look, low light and shallow depth of field, but its fully manual, not weather sealed, and a fixed focal length. I think that at your first lens the 12-40 would be great because you have many focal lengths to choose from. I would look into primes as a second or third lens =)
@highestvirtue18924 жыл бұрын
Great info! I can only afford 1 lens what should I buy? I would use it for travel video and some photography. I would like to hv really good handheld stabilization.
@itsryanwilkes4 жыл бұрын
I would get the 12-35 f/2.8 OR the 12-60 f2.8-4. Both are great but the 12-60 has more reach, and the 12-35 is better in lowlight throughout the entire range.

I'm coming from a Sony A7SII with 18, 25, 35, 50, 75mm primes. I really like the new BMPCC4k but struggling trying to wrap my mind around the 2x crop haha. It's like... I know I want to use a 50mm for its compression and look on faces for a dinner scene in a relatively small dinning room but that crop! I'll have to knock walls down haha. Anyway... I'm just not used to it and I dont want to just say pass me the 25mm when it doesnt give the look I'm after. Oh well... Anyway, cool video. I subbed, looking forward to using MFT just trying to figure out what lens to get. Thanks.
@itsryanwilkes6 жыл бұрын
Hey Norman, thanks for the comment! Yes, we definitely make sacrifices as MFT users. But we also get some benefits haha! If you are are looking for a good 50mm equivalent there are 4 lenses that I would look at: the Olympus 25mm f1.2, voigtlander 25mm f0.95, Panasonic 25mm f1.4 and the Mitakon Speedmaster 25mm f1.5. If you want more depth of field you will probably have to go up to a 85mm equivalent (42.5 mm on MFT). I have owned both the voigtlander 42.5 f/0.95 (My favorite!) and the panasonic 42.5 f1.7 and both are great. The panasonic is definitely the budget friendly option, but the fly by wire focus is terrible lol. There is also the legendary Panasonic Nocticron but it also has fly by wire focus. So for me as a video focused shooter I had to go for the voigtlander =) Hope this helped in some way!

Or if I was doing weddings. Now...the voight 10.5 interests me. Or the sigma 14mm EF with metabones. One of those will be my next lens purchase to get wide shots. Shortest I have now is sigma 18-35 which is a 23-24mm equiv.

No the speedbooster is only for lenses that are meant for larger frame sensors. The m43 lenses dont fit onto it.
@justinoliver28514 жыл бұрын
If money is not option would you stay with Panasonic lenses or go with Olympus pro lenses. The two things that draw me to the oly pro is the f 1.2 and the manual clutch
@itsryanwilkes4 жыл бұрын
Great question! If money is no trouble I would get the Panasonic 10-25 f1.7, which also has a manual clutch. I'll sacrifice a bit of light for the versatility haha, and I have done just that! My kit is now basically the Panasonic 10-25 f1.7, 12-60 f2.8-4 and 50-200 f2.8-4. But yes, I have been dying to test the Olympus lenses. For photography I have heard they are amazing and probably the best m43 lenses out there. For video the only down side would be there is no dual IS with any of the Oly lenses but that only matters if you do a lot of run and gun shooting.
@justinoliver28514 жыл бұрын
The Path Less Traveled Oh I didn’t know the 10-25 had a manual clutch too. That’s awesome. I manly do wedding so having any extra light I can get is a plus since churches are usually poorly lit. 🙄

Very true, churches can be tricky. If you've got a gimbal for tracking shots and the ceremony is locked off on a tripod for the most part, the Olympus primes will be awesome! Which camera are you shooting on?

@itsryanwilkes5 жыл бұрын
Definitely not worth it. It's only worth shooting log in 10 bit to get all of the benefit. To be honest, I have yet to purchase v-log for my GH5 because I feel there are so many other aspects of my filmmaking that I need to improve before I start worrying about grading and dynamic range too much. Also, my computer can hardly handle regular 8bit 4K footage as it is haha 😅

@vicibox6 жыл бұрын
You are a travel protog??? I cant think of a worse kit, I wouldnt carry that tat to the zoo let alone up a mountain. I chose MFT as a travel kit because it was small and light, I can see very little point replicating a DSLR kit. If i was willing to take that lot I would buy into a bigger system like the fully weatherproof Fuji system. I am not willing to carry a lot so I use a GX9 with grip and a 14-140mm catch all lens. Its not weather proof and only adequately good quality so, if i went where you go I would buy the weatherproof Leica 12-60mm which is perfect with the weatherproof GH5. I dont like zooms so 80% of the time I use high quality primes. I dont count Noct lenses as quality primes, I hate them with a passion, they are too dead, flat, oversharp and way too heavy and big. They have far too many lens elements for the zing i crave. I need hyper realism in photos, my main system is Leica, so carry an Olympus 17mm f1.8 & 45mm f1.8; they are sharp with fantastic depth resolution and microtones and will take a generous crop doing away with the need to use a zoom. The big surprise I found was the 12-32mm kit zoom that came with my camera. I assumed it was rubbish until I tried it one day. Far from it, its stunningly sharp; it just needed a metal Leica style lens hood permanently fitted to protect teh front element. I leave it on the camera for a walk round and just throw the whole thing in my handbag; something you cant do with any of your kit. Modern MFT cameras have 5 stops of stability and certainly dont need Noct lenses which are uniformly ghastly. People are always searching for better low light for reasons I have never understood, but then I grew up with Kodachrome 25 and a f3.5 lens. Film photographers managed well enough; Mick Rock took Bowie concerts with a Nikkormat. I have no trouble doing night street photography on my Panasonic with a f1.8 prime. The human eye has 10 stops of DR and you have 14, just improve your technique instead of paying a fortune for technology you dont need - just saying - winks
@itsryanwilkes6 жыл бұрын
Hi Vici, thanks for the comment. First of all, I am a filmmaker over a photographer, so we treat low light situations a bit differently. I see your point, and you are right, its not exactly compact. But for me, its worth it because I know that I can get every single shot I could ever want. And still compared to the full frame equivalents, its a fraction of the size/weight. I also have the 12-60 leica, and while its a good lens for photography, I find the drop off to f/4 a bit annoying when im in low light filming situations. And thank you for your opinion on the voigtlanders. I personally love the look that they give my films, and they are my favorite lenses. They are also essential for me because of the reliable manual focus rings. I enjoy carrying all of my gear up mountains because I know that no one else is willing to do it, and it allows me to create unique films as a one man team 😁
@vicibox6 жыл бұрын
I am afraid I am a Leica owning Scientist who has designed optical systems as part of my career. I know very well how many scattering surfaces are in a Noct lens. It is no surprise that the lens that gave its name to the type is the most expensive lens in the world, the 7 element Leica Noctilux 50mm f0.95; you pay to have that few glass elements. Glass kills microtones and image quality. The worst Noct lenses are Olympus with 20 elements, which give 40 light absorbing light scattering interfaces. Panasonic and Voightlander are the best no doubt. I am afraid i can see the deadening effects in the images even in poor quality YouTuibe reviews. Reviewers are too busy admiring the bokeh to notice the image is flat and lifeless. Most protogs shoot these lenses wide open which is what they were designed to do; edge to edge sharp flat field images. Well I need context in a photo, I am constantly seeking hyperfocal realism. I get this with my Leica Summilux and Summicron lenses in spades but they cost an arm and a leg. All my serious lenses have less than 10 elements, I wont buy lenses with more; except my convenience zooms which I dont take seriously. Has to be said my Leica 18-56mm Elmar-T zoom has 10 elements and is teh only zoom I have ever tested that resolves like a prime; mind it costs more than a MFT Noct prime. I wish Olympus and Panasonic would harden their normal primes, if they made the Lumix Leica 25mm f1.4 weatherproof I would buy it like a shot. Seems we normal mortals must suffer. Good luck with your trips and hope your back holds out he he ;-)

Vici Martynov I would love to shoot with real Leica glass one day!! Nothing compares to it. Thank you =)
@vicibox6 жыл бұрын
I find that the Olympus f1.8 and Lumix f1.7 primes give my Leicas a run for their money, they certainly blew away my Nikons. I bought into MFT because i lost my temper carrying a DSLR round nature reserves on holiday it was too heavy and way too clumsy and kept missing shots. Missing a rare watervole was the last straw. I threw it in a drawer using my amazing fully waterproof Olympus TG-3; you should buy one (its now a TG-5) and slip it in your pocket on a hike and you wont ever be disapointed. So you see why I was astonished you bought heavy large lenses. So I bought the GX7 and 14-140mm for trips. It was very good. Bought the 17mm f1.8 OMG it was far better than my Nikon primes. That was what caused my switch to Panasonic for travel and Leica for use in the city. I converted my Nikkor D primes to Leica M (G primes were rubbish and I sold them with the bodies) and now use them on my Leica TL2. The image quality is fantastic especially in Leica monochrome, not as good as Leica glass but, still looks fantastic compared to the Nikon bodies. There are fantastic bargain lenses out there if you look especially film lenses as they have to be well corrected as they cant be corrected by software. Lightroom has been the worst enemy of lens design. I find the GX9 and the TL2 are my perfect combination; also loved by Hugh Brownstone it seems. But then I shoot street with a little nature. If I did video I would choose the GH5. Do I need weatherproofing? My sister put it bluntly, Vici you will never wander around with a camera in the rain you will have an umbrella and a mac; a valid point in my case. The following video explains lens quality very well ;-) yannickkhong.com/blog/2016/2/23/the-problem-with-modern-optics
