General tips for roguelikes: they typically have a Wait command. When separated by one tile from melee enemies, let them cross the gap by Waiting rather than move forward and give them a free shot. It'll boost your survivability tremendously. Also, check if the game has some form of auto-travel, i.e. "advance in hallway until something interesting or an enemy is encountered". It's much better than spamming the key to move, since the latter will also often give free shots to enemies.

I've spent years playing ADOM when I was a teenager. Literal years, evenings, holidays, swapping to other games and returning to it again... I've bought this new graphical ADOM a year ago, but wasn't able to play with that fancy nice art, I just had to swap to ASCII :D This game is divine! I wish for ADOM to stay maintained, fun and well balanced for generations to come!

Its made so potato pcs and chrome books can run it so I guess they made the art direction cartoony so it can look ok even with a little budget thrown to the art. If you want more serious aesthetic there is always the OG Adom.

First impression of this game is pretty good - character builder offers lots of possibilities/builds and there are many diffrent game mechanics/interactions possible. But the more you play the more you see how unfinished/buggy this game really is - it was supposed to be a full release late 2021 but it's still pretty much early access title as of Feb 2022. If anyone is interested in buying please see steam reviews first. Don't get me wrong, you can have fun in this game but devs need to put in more work and fix the (often game breaking) bugs.

Andor Drakon in the ADOM universe is at some point in the timeline the top Chaos God. Essentially its a world where godship can be taken by mortals who ascend. No idea if this game is based pre original ADOM or post so don't know if it's him as a mortal trying to ascend or him as a fallen god trying to claw it back. Also the typing thing is an old staple in the game where you know a heavily corrupted being is talking to you because of that style.

DoomRL is my favourite pure roguelike, the gameplay is fast. The sequel Jupiter Hell is also great, but not free. If you want something even more traditional, Nethack is great but you have to read the wiki somewhat.

I'm not sure what you mean, exactly. Turn-based roguelikes are very common, and most have a system somewhat similar to ADOM. There's lots of different ones. ADOM, Nethack, Dungeon Crawl: Stone soup and so on. DoomRL is also very fun! There's lots of outdated game design stuff in them, though, so you might need to wiki binge a bit to get the basics down... So yeah, I agree with gracefool, DoomRL should be easy to pick up and understand.

I'm not convinced this is a step in the right direction aesthetically. I feel like rogues have a very specific look to them that most players don't mind. Someone could theoretically take a rogue like ADOM into the future by simplifying the controls, vastly improving the tilesets, and adding some tiled animations. Idk, maybe if the tiles were sprites? But idk about this...
