What an amazing collection and what an amazing story. This adds more fuel to the fire that it's best to just collect what you love and if it goes up in value then fine, but if not; then that also is fine as you are the proud owner of stuff you love.

Love this video! I work with Veterans, who battle PTSD. I’ve introduced them to the hobby, because hobbies provide them with “downtime”. I just wanted to thank some of your viewers, for sending me cards, for them to trade, and appreciate. It’s just me, and sometimes cards are difficult, for me to buy, for them. You, and your viewers, have provided them with hours, of pleasure. Thank you all. Sincerely, LT Quinn Mallonee🇺🇸

My grandfather, born in 1927, used to tell me about the cards/comics (Superman/Action Comics #1 was his gem) he had until his mom threw it all out. You could just see the heartbreak in his eyes. My best was a Joe Montana rookie bought at a card show for $8 on a Sunday. Next morning it went to $200. Sold it in high school to fix my car. A lot of great cards I've got since then usually went to be sold to pay a bill or bail out (not jail) some emergency. So, I've been pretty cleaned out, but do have a couple nuggets stashed away to pass on to my kids/grandkids when my days are done. And now it's boiled down to buying complete sets and leaving them unopened, and also stashing unopened hobby & blaster boxes. With the recent retail changes, I'm going to straight hobby boxes. Great vid's. Love the attic finds.

Thanks! I hope you caught the attic find about Action Comics 1. My dad had similar stories about his cards getting trashed, except it was the 1950s and 1960s.

I still have 2 rookie Montana's I pulled myself when I was a kid. I would have three, except I sold one to a friend for $100 in 1990. I need cash to go to a bachelor party in Vega. See liked a good idea at the time! Ha!!

Mike, I should have subscribed to your channel awhile ago. I saw your video a little while ago with Mr. Mintihan. I actually bought a couple of Uncle Jimmy’s cards from Wheatland. @ryanmcclanahan8739 Жыл бұрын
That's an amazing story. Often times it's not the super star player autographs that are the rarest, but the small guys. Some guys like Christy Mathewson and Bobby Tompson didn't understand why someone would want their autograph? Both Goudey factories are still standing though I haven't been to either.
@JunkWaxHero Жыл бұрын

@@JunkWaxHero I'm not sure. I live in Boston so the next time I'm in the area I'll find out. There was something like 6 or 7 Massachusetts manufacturers between 1910 and 1941 that issued sports cards and I think only the buildings of National Chicle (804 Main St, Cambridge) and Goudey still stand.

Compared to Marshall Fogel who owns one of the three graded gem mint Mantle 10’s in existence, as well as others of his ilk. I admire Uncle Jimmy the most and regard as a TRUE collector because as you mentioned JWH, he never paid more than 1.25 for a card. Before the internet/junk wax era kids bought cards in packs,racks or cellos from retail stores and maybe traded with there friend and in rare occasions we’re lucky enough to go a show in attempt to complete sets. Nothing against collectors who buy cards off of EBay, auction houses or their LCS as I do all three. Because obviously, Uncle Jimmy not only had the advantage of being born in the early 20th century more importantly he had the foresight to collect, save and take care of his cards and memorabilia until he passed. A truly remarkable and admirable collection and story. JWH, do you think it’s fair to distinguish between a collector who’s majority of their collection were bought through second hand sources and a “True” collector whose collection consists of mostly cards they themselves opened? Love the attic finds - thanks!
@JunkWaxHero Жыл бұрын
Interesting question! I think it’s fair to distinguish between them that way… it’s a really interesting thought though. Back in the day, opening packs made financial sense. Nowadays, it doesn’t. But the cards I pulled myself - even ultramodern - mean more to me for some reason.
@commentingcollector Жыл бұрын
@@JunkWaxHero - agreed, I would love for that or something similar as one of your topics on your BCM panel show. Is a “true” collector (as I described it) truly a thing? Or could it even seem more authentic or virtuous than someone who “cherry picks” the cards in their collection. Reiterating that I have nothing against the latter as I myself don’t buy packs anymore but I have a kind of respect or nostalgia for collectors who still are building sets by buying the unopened. Remember when we had double, triples or even quadruples? Rare these days.

I think the “to Jimmy” requests simply made it more personal. So, value or not, the request really conveys intention: That these cards were going to somebody who cared a lot, and was not going to dump them, or get rid of them for the wrong reasons. The “permanence” of the request may have helped players to take their guard down a bit.
