What do you mean when you're saying at 30 seconds? Does it take 30s until it reaches the maximum light, or after 30s it heats and stops?
@georgekokologiannis3783
@georgekokologiannis3783 7 жыл бұрын
It measures the output 30 seconds after turn on , because the reading exactly at turn on will be higher (and it only lasts for a few seconds) .
@Lumencraft-
@Lumencraft- 7 жыл бұрын
If you measure right at turn on you get a falsely high reading. Waiting for 30 seconds allows the output to level off and gives more consistant and precise measurements.
@JasonWW2000
@JasonWW2000 7 жыл бұрын
Vlad Constantin Radulescu The 30 seconds is one of the requirements of measuring to ansi-fl1 standards that most flashlight companies agreed to use. The amount of time they chose, 30 seconds, allows for heat to build up and for the output to stabilize so as to give a more realistic lumen measurement.

30 seconds much better reflects typical usage than "at turn on".

AdventureSportFlashlights I’m thinking about modifying my old Led Lenser P17 by putting a Cree XHP70 (6v version) and it is a bit confusing for me. I have the Olight H2R nova that has the XHP50 but I am really wondering how does it work with just an 18650 battery at 4.2 to 3.7 volts since the xhp needs 6 volts.

Got interested in LED flashlights recently. Stumbled upon your C8 video and was amazed at the throw the modded C8 produces. Subscribed to your channel to learn more...excellent videos! While I learn more about the LED flashlight hobby and fabrication, I picked up a Thorfire C8S to get started. Ordered a charger and batteries from your online store. Looking forward to modding my own C8 thrower!

Hey, I come from IT background, and there's something to think of: A processor draws say 95W under load, and it can get hot. If you use solder like Indium and compare the temperatures between thermal paste, you will get 20c cooler temps on solder...

How do you measure current and power requirements for an LED? I've read that in some cases like the 219bs require resistance if you use a single emitter and suggest thinner or longer wires from the driver to mcpcb as one way to create the resistance and not fry the LED.

@Lumencraft-
@Lumencraft- 5 жыл бұрын
To consistently get that much current you need to use a buck driver and two batteries. Some XPLHI emitters will give you 5+ amps on a fully charged cell if you use the mosfet driver, but when the over voltage from the cell wears off the current will drop a bit.

Hi Neal. Glad to hear your going to give it a shot. There probably are some things missing. Modding does take some creativity and patience, but if your determined to do it, you'll prevail. I have a couple of videos about soldering that may help. The number one most important thing about modding is not to be discouraged if things don't go perfectly as planned. Even those of us who do it all the time hit bumps in the road. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z57FYpqLm7qLibc

@Lumencraft-
@Lumencraft- 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks. You can put the XHP70.2 in a C8 but you would need to use the 6V mosfet driver and a pair of IMR 18350s. The run time would be very short though. The batteries would last only about 8 minutes on full power.

Thanks for the reply to my previous comment! KZbin wouldn't let comment on that post again. One more question. I ordered a fet+7135 driver from Mt electronics for this build. Is that the right one? I didn't see one that said mosfet and I read somewhere it's often abrieviated as Fet. But it has 7135 chips so it's confusing.
@Lumencraft-
@Lumencraft- 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, that driver will work perfectly in this mod. The single 7135 chip on that board is only to smooth out the appearance of PWM. Most of the current will travel through a separate channel.
@Lumencraft-
@Lumencraft- 7 жыл бұрын
That driver will also work. You will get lower current than you would if you use a mosfet like the one from my shop or the +1 7135 board from mountain. For some reason I found those boards to be much higher in resistance.

I have a bunch of 18 gauge wire, can I use this for the bypass and on the mcpcb wire leads or so you recommend a different type of wire/gauge?
@Lumencraft-
@Lumencraft- 5 жыл бұрын
I typically use like 22g myself. 18 will work but sometimes when you use really thick wire the spring can't compress and it will mash the tail end of your battery.

Iv gone from a xh-pl hi 2v 1a to a noticgon like yours and I didn't see a major improvement, am I doing something wrong?
@Lumencraft-
@Lumencraft- 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Warne. I would not say your doing anything wrong, just that there is still room for improvement :) If you really want to see a jump in the output you need to also upgrade the driver board. The main advantage to using an mcpcb like noctigons is so you can drive the LED much harder. For the best results you can either use the mosfet type driver, or you can solder some extra 7135 chips ( those 4 prong chips all over it) on the existing driver to add some current.
@JasonWW2000
@JasonWW2000 7 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised to see you leave the insulation on your bypass wires. I've found that the thick insulation prevents the spring from fully compressing. This can make using a long battery a real pain. I started going one step beyond removing the insulation. I use some fine copper braid typically used for desoldering. It's a bit tricky to use as it soaks up solder fast and can get stiff, but if your quick you can get it right. I put the braid flat on the bottom and top so I can fully compress the spring. It seems to work really well. Keep up the good work Matt.
@Lumencraft-
@Lumencraft- 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, if you need extra space dumping the silcone will help. The main reason I leave it on is because I worry that the constant up down motion of the spring can cause pieces of wire to flake off and create a short. So far I've never heard of anyone reporting that though :)
@JasonWW2000
@JasonWW2000 7 жыл бұрын
AdventureSportFlashlights That's an interesting thought. Another reason to go with braid. :) It's super flexible and probably has much less resistance than a small wire. I know the factory bypass wire on my Convoy L6 broke after a few compressions. Now I use braid because it has a larger contact point on the ends.

Questions are fine bro. That's what this type of tutorial is all bout, helping people to understand. It would not be helpful on that driver. There are 2 channels on that board. The main channel where a large amount of current flows. Then a second channel for the 7135 where a small amount flows. They "fire" at opposite times as each other. The PWM in the small channel fires at the opposite time as the large one (but with less light) to "fill in" the gaps so you dont see any blinking from the PWM. Here is a great video by Advanced Knife Bro that explains PWM in detail kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5espWyVnsyFkMU

The latest Convoy C8 already come with the XP-L HI on DTP copper board, so you can just buy the finished light, don't even need to do anything with the LED but just swap the driver into a FET one. After that you just need to do the spring mods and you have powerful C8! By the way what battery do you use in your C8?

Programing is difficult and sometimes just stops working completely for a few min even if the battery is taken out and replaced. My friends seems to have a spotty connection somewhere. Can't figure out where though. Wondering if the drivers are screwy. Any ideas? We're new at Flashlights but not soldering. All the joints are good.

I'd be glad to help you with that. Starting with the light that has a flicker. I would check to see if the retaining ring that holds the switch in place is threaded in tightly. I have found these to be loose many times causing issues similar to what you describe. If your host is a Convoy the tail cap rings are a reverse thread in many cases. Also check the driver retaining ring and other points of electrical contact to make sure they are solid. You can also try removing the tail cap totally and just jump the connection between the battery negative and the body of the light, if the flicker stops you know the weak connection is in the tail. If it does not check the other end. For the mode changes/random shut off. It sounds like you may have a short. I would check the driver closely and see if any accidental solder bridges were made. In some china made lights I have also had the retaining ring or the lip where the driver sits be too close to the on board components causing a bridge. It's always possible that a driver simply is bad, but with this board it's pretty rare. I have them manufactured in the USA, all the components are assembled by machine (all thought I suspect the pcb itself may be outsourced to China) so QC on them has been pretty good.
@josephkuser
@josephkuser 7 жыл бұрын
AdventureSportFlashlights tail switch has been eliminated by switching our tail caps and flickering still occurred. We also took the whole tail assembly apart and inspected and reassembled. I just did what you said again also to double check. They are both convoys. I just remembered that the light will only come on if you unscrew the bezel a little bit
@Lumencraft-

Ok, I hadn't thought of this until you said that bit about unscrewing the bezel. It's very possible your reflector is shorting out on one of the LED wires.

Could you please explain to me how this works? I thought the XP-L HI was only rated for a maximum of around 1000 lumens? How did you get such high numbers? Also, I keep hearing about people saying they run their XP-L HI at 5 amps or more or something like that, but isn't the XP-L HI only rated for a maximum of 3 amps? How can you run it off of 5 amps?
@Lumencraft-
@Lumencraft- 6 жыл бұрын
Sure. If you create a really good thermal path its possible to drive the cree emitters much much higher than what they are rated for. I think Cree rates them at lower current because they assume most people will use the old style mcpcbs and they want to shoot for at least a 5 year continuous life.

Great video thanks! Protected or unprotected cell? What do you suggest? Also why a mosfet? I tried to read on it a little but way over my head. Thanks.
@Lumencraft-
@Lumencraft- 7 жыл бұрын
I use unprotected myself. They are lower resistance inside which means the LED will be driven harder. A Sony VTC6 is a great choice. Same answer for the mosfet driver. 7135 based drivers like nanjg 105C limit current to about 3 amps, and also add resistance to the build. The mosfet is basically like running the light with no driver in it at all. Direct drive off the battery, but you have the benefit of lower modes created by PWM. Other than Cree advancements in LED tech that driver is the best thing to hit the flashlight industry in 10 years.

AdventureSportFlashlights can I just use a razor blade and cut it off or is there an other way I should be doing it
@Lumencraft-
@Lumencraft- 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can just slice it off. Be careful not to cut so close you nick the bond wires over the emitter. I leave about 0.020--0.030" (twenty to thiry thousandths of an inch above the dies. The most common way to do an XML though is to take the emitter and mcpcb out of the light and soak it in high octane gasoline over night. The dome will just pop off, then clean it with rubbing alcohol to remove the gas residue and let it dry. This will take it off right down to the emitter. The gas treatment does not work on newer LEDs like XHP70 so you know.

@@KZbinISRANBYRETARDS do we have to know amperage? I see some mcpcb board have higher amperage like 6amps but I suspect I need to consider using wiring that can support 6amps when making driver leads as well as considering this in electronics (tail caps, buttons etc)?

Is this pretty much the same as the Astrolux C8?
@Lumencraft-
@Lumencraft- 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's very similar. The A6 driver used in the Astrolux is going to have slightly more perfect looking PWM in low modes, but a reduced current in high modes. Originally those drivers were very good (designed by BLF members). I bought some of them a while back though and found they started using some really cheap components or something that caused resistance to be high. On maximum power I was averaging only about 3.5 amps vs 4.5-5 ish from the regular mosfet using what ever LED was the hot button at the time. I have never had one of the pre assembled lights so I can't say for sure what current you'd see from it (maybe better components are used). Here is a fairly recent review of it where I noticed there is also a step down timer incorporated in it. budgetlightforum.com/node/57800

would it be possible to make it a floody light?
@Lumencraft-
@Lumencraft- 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Gary. Yes, it's possible. If I were going to use this host to make a flooder I would probly put multiple LEDs with an optic in it. I suppose the easiest way to get a super flood beam would be to pull the reflector out and just run it as a mule.

@Lumencraft-

The glass lens that this comes with is just standard type glass. You can get one that has an anti reflective coating on it that will allow more light to pass through it. This will only gain you a few percent though.

I started as a flashaholic since 2011 and during that time all the C8's in the market were using XM-L T6 with aluminum board (with dielectric layer), and it was considered quite a performer at that time. Things have gone a long way and I have witness how far the technology and hobbyist's knowledge have improved over the time!

You're right, my bad...I'm going to use a Yezl Y3 as a host. I just finished a C8 last night with an XPL hi and a FET driver from bangood and running a VTC6 cell it really is the king of budget throwers. BTW I found this emitter from Luminus, theres some minor talk about it at BLF but not much really. It will cost around $100 but look at the specs - 5500 lumens at 27 amps from an XPL die size emitter area (3mmx3mm) Any ideas for a driver for this? This looks like a monster... www.luminus.com/products/CFT-90.html
