Epic DWOK theory: Greg is in Hell. Sometime in the books, possibly around The Long Haul (as that is the last book that could logically take place with him still in middle school), Greg died. It is clear from reading the books that Greg is a bad person, so every book after Long Haul is actually him being punished in Hell by being forced to spend an eternity in middle school as a loser, constantly tormented by ridiculous events that keep screwing him over. This would explain why Greg is still in middle school despite the timeline not making sense, and why the books' events have became less realistic. Hell would have no concern for realism. Greg is given the ultimate punishment by being stuck as a pathetic middle school student, never to grow, never to change, never to get away from his shit life no matter what he does, trapped in a never ending cycle of failure and misery.
