I would replace the med kit with electrical tape, a thin hankerchief or rag, gorilla gloves or black latex gloves, aluminum foil, some copper wire, hose clamps, wire nuts, fuses, patch kit, etc. I would carry a kit like that when on my 4 wheeler or in the truck as a back up tool system. Awesome stuff man!

@toolgear also just thought of a few more items: some teflon tape, super glue, utility razor blades, washers, heat shrink tubing, some type of lubricant for metal, and small sawzall blade or a way to cut plastic pipe.

I use the same pouch for my tool kit. A few other things I keep in it that might work for you: A diamond file pen, microcord (if you want to get rid of the paracord, this is like string and still pretty strong), Bic lighter and hot glue stick (works great as an emergency glue) Some ranger bands/elastic bands, A bandana or Microfiber cloth, Various screws/nails. Electrical tape. Hope that might give you some ideas!
@toolgear2 ай бұрын
It does… early version of the kit had a bandana. I got a couple of rolls of micro cord around here, but didn’t consider putting it in there so thanks for the ideas.

nice kit! I need to throw some pipettes into my travel tool kit, thanks for the idea and the video One thing I always like to have is safety wire: thin and strong and stainless,. If you need to re-hang a broken exhaust mount on the side of the road, or make a temp hose clamp, the stuff is brilliant, and works in high-heat (where my zip ties and duct tape would melt). I also like to have dedicated wire cutters, but you have that covered with the leatherman. Thanks again.

So I keep a coat hanger shaped like the frame of my bag around the edge. It’s stiffens up the outside of the bag and it’s really useful to have that gauge of wire. When I was rebuilding my jeep I actually used part of the coat hanger to make flag nuts. I welded a piece of the coat hanger on to a nut so I could insert the nut into the frame without losing the nut inside. Just an idea
@toolgear2 ай бұрын
Those metal coat hangers are getting harder to find, agree they’re very useful. I’ve used them a lot myself. Will have to probably put one in the kit now.

Consider a small vice grip and sawzall blades. The vicegrip can do things other wrenches can’t, including holding saw blades and serving a a handle.

If you remember a time when you said, "Dang, wish I had x right now," that's what you should put in, especially if you've said it about the same thing multiple times. Personally, I'd remove the redundancies to make it a little thinner and lighter. I would consider keeping the rope as I've had to use some a couple of times, but if you don't, then toss it. I know I've seen it mentioned, but just to reiterate. EDC kits are a personal thing. I've never needed a pippette, so that stood out as being kind of odd to me. Then you said you work in a lab, and I was like, that's cool. I keep a little strip of sandpaper as that's something I need on a fairly regular basis at work. Little rust removal or to remove some print on cans or wood crates before disposing them.
@toolgear2 ай бұрын
Thanks for the advice. That was actually very helpful because I know there’s been several times when I’ve been caught in a place where I needed a tiny dedicated flathead screwdriver.

Having a couple of survival tools are OK. I keep a couple of aquatabs, gloves, whistle, waterproof matches (instead of bic), smaller firestarter, tylenol, alcohol spray and granola bar. Then I would add a small amount (3 feet) of duct tape. For tools I would add a 3-5 inch (something a nite ize) pry bar, post-it-notes are so much more versatile than rite in the rain, a small magnet, your PST means you do not need a needle-nose or can opener. I would drop the box cutter - you have a great Opinel knife but would use the PST for box cutting.

Bravo Zulu! First rule in a kit like that is carry what you will use. Each person's collection will vary... but it's fun to share ideas! Here's some suggestions: 1) I like to have a small ziploc bag available--very handy for holding tiny parts that I always seem to drop and lose. 2) Fresnel lens: I need something to make the teeny-tiny print larger and easier to seer 3) Bic lighter: I don't smoke and am typically not around people who do--but it amazed me how often I really need a flame. 4) Drinking straw: I store my zip ties in a drinking straw to keep them together, works well. 5) Pocket duct tape: There's some flat-style pocket duct tape products available that go well here. Great job!

You could upgrade your channel locks to the knipex cobra water pliers &/or wrench pliers, get multi-tool that has better ergos in case you ever really need to squeeze it, & they make p38 like can opener that is the same size but also has a potato peeler.

I have looked through the comments and not much I can add. I do suggest keep the bobo kit. You could get a small injury that you don't need a full 1st aid kit. You have a great kit that is proven. Your is something to model after. One more a small sowing kit. Things happen.

Use what you carry and carry what you use. After 8 years, it might be time to leave the candle out. How long has it been since you used any paracord? Things I might add: safety pins, heat shrink tubing, Fluke 50 meter.

A couple of weeks ago I seen a strength test between harbor freight box end wrenches against Snap on. It was a pretty interesting watch. I'm not sure what to believe anymore but the dude has all the metrics on digital meters? So I'm not recommending either wrench, just something to look at. I use Fiskers to cut the gills my salmon before I head out from the river. Super sharp for sure.

Well... if you have dedicated medical kits then I'd agree you don't need medical in your "tool kit". Removing that stuff makes sense. I'd still keep some gloves in the kit just in case you need to work on something you'd really rather not get on your hands. As far as "survival" items go the only thing I'd leave out of the kit is the magnesium bar. Having multiple lightning options is always nice... but you likely need to re-up the lightstick as they do usually have a best by date. I'd keep the light stick as they are pretty bomb proof and give you a disposable lighting option you can share and not worry about needing to reclaim. I'd keep the candle just to have a little wax in the kit to seal metal vs corrosion or rub into the threads of a screw or bolt to lubricant it. It weighs practically nothing anyways and provides one additional light source that doesn't rely on batteries. Cordage is always a good emergency nice to have even outside of survival reasons. The paracord+glow stick make for a good signaling device at night in case you get stranded on the side of a road... or tieing down a load in your vehicle. I'd likely add some shrink tubing and a small amount of wiring to the kit in case you need to replace some worn wiring. The bic could be used with the shrink tubing to make the repairs less slap-dash. I'd personally want to add some more tape to the kit. I'd agree to the white electrical tape someone else mentioned from the multi-use nature off it being used to label stuff... but I'd want some gorilla tape as well. I've recently grown to appreciate the usefulness of UV glue as a repair item. The frames on my glasses broke in three pieces and I happened to have some Bondic glue and the uv light on my Olight Arkfeld to make a solid repair that'll hold up until I can get a replacement. I was able to "tack" things in place with small dots and cure them... then add another layer over the top to build up structural material and cure that. So yeah... a little bit of UV resin or glue can be very handy to make quick repairs unlike most super glues that need a little extra time to cure.
@toolgear2 ай бұрын
Thank you. Will definitely be adding more tape and some glue. Thanks for taking the time.
