This is a review/setup of my Indian River Canoe I use for fly fishing and flats fishing in South Florida. This canoe works great for the Everglades, The Florida Keys or just bass fishing lakes and ponds. Please subscribe to my channel and leave a like if you enjoyed the review.

I gotta tell you my canoe story. I found a fiberglass 16 ft that looked good in pics. The man couldn't meet me during the day ,plus he was moving and the canoe was at the old house without power. I met him and from the little light on my phone it looked fine. Next morning I realized he had used aluminum tape and tapes bunches of holes and painted over them. The bow bottoms were worn thru from rubbing. I had $100.00 in this wreck. Most would have hauld it off. I use to fiberglass repair corvettes and semi truck hoods. With the material I have close to $300.00 in my canoe. Oh yeah ,I chopped a couple.ft off the back and made a flat back transom like yours. Its like 13ft 9inchs. I wanted to be in the smaller size for DNR reasons. I still gotta biuld my seat frames, she's raw inside. I did clean and paint the interior. She had pressure treated lumber screwed in for seats when I got her. They came out with the tape job. I live in North Ga. Wish we were closer so you could pass along some wisdom on canoe fishing. My daughters and ex in-laws live near Savannah. I go hang out with them and build stuff with my ex father in law several times a year.

Hey Tex, what about drainage? I have a 12' "Otter" from Indian River, which appears identical other than the length. The biggest put-off has been the lack of a drain hole in the stern. One bad thunderstorm on the Gulf Coast can get quite a bit of water in a canoe. I like my Otter, but I have to have something for drainage when the canoe is trailered, open side up. Sure, I could trailer it facing down, but can't put all my stuff in there to travel. Have been eyeballing the "Old River" canoes, which supposedly have such drains, but can't find out much about them since there is no website that I can find. I like your setup though. Mine is similar but I use either a 3.5hp 2-stroke or a 5hp 2-stroke Nissan. The canoe will actually plane with the 5hp! I fully agree on the versatility these things have. You can configure it in many different ways depending on the circumstances.

Any tips for using the paddle/pole? I tried flyfishing off a paddleboard after I saw a few of your older videos, not super easy to quietly put paddle down and grab fly rod, while staying lined up with the fish. Looking at maybe getting a small jonboat or a canoe like this.
@OutdoorswithTex
@OutdoorswithTex 5 жыл бұрын
My biggest tip is to just know you are gonna spook some fish and not get some shots, but when you get in a fishy area or circumstance slow wayyyyyyy dowwwwnnn and training yourself to look a little farther than you are comfortable in order to have time to get setup. Also never take your eye off the fish, learn to switch paddle for fly rod without looking down. If the shot is not lining up, be patient, back off and reposition...many times fish circle back or stay in a small area feeding. Good luck, thanks for watching!

Hey Tex. I have a similar set-up but a 6hp suzuki and a 15 ft wenonah backwater rolalex hull. I previously had a fiberglass lay-up canoe but got tired a patching small cracks do to crashing waves. Wenonah discontinued the backwater ,so i would choose Esquif T-formex now or a used aluminum grumman or similar. Also i would not eliminate a KaBoat. The Suzuki outboards are solid motors.
@TTTT-rc4fv

Hi I have a small dory fishing boat, 16 ft. Was looking at the esquire rangeley 17 and heard it flexes a bit so am leaning towards a Grumman or a 16.5' kevlar clippers canoe. what do you think?
@shawnhuis9016
@shawnhuis9016 2 жыл бұрын
@@TTTT-rc4fv Esquif!!! .. flex in a canoe hull is better then cracks. Kevlar hulls require repair work and aluminum grumman are loud and rivots may fail. Mount a six hp outboard and boogey
@alexchang435
@alexchang435 2 жыл бұрын
@shawn huis - did you have any concerns with overpowering the wenonah? I believe 6hp is above their recommended specs. I ask because I am planning to put a small outboard on the Esquif Cargo. That boat has a max of 3hp, but wanted to put a 4hp suzuki on it. My concern is the 4hp suzuki is 25lbs heavier than the 2.5hp. Will that extra weight prematurely wear down the transom, or worst yet, sink the stern?
@shawnhuis9016
@shawnhuis9016 2 жыл бұрын
@@alexchang435 No my Suzuki 6 hp has never compromised the transom , however royalex is likely stronger then t-formex .Ignore the recommended specs as they are only suggested. My videos will prove and empower folks to go beyond what we are told is safe.
