Very nice video Dan. I can 100% vouch for the "don't use 1/4" hoses" part of that. I am going to test what makes it better soon on my channel. I'm going to drill the orifice and keep the 1/4" lines first. Then I will upgrade to the 3/8" hoses and fittings to see the difference. Currently my steering is terribly slow.
@FlawedOffroad2 жыл бұрын
There is another mod you can do under the orifice piece, but I didnt mention it since I wasnt doing it. There is a spring loaded deal under the orifice and it can be modified, the same dudes from west texas offroad had an article about it somewhere on the web. Thx for watchin Rob

@@FlawedOffroad I did play with the brass washer a bit to increase the pressure already. I'm pretty sure my problem is flow, not pressure.

You can get bottom taps. They're not pointed on the end like taper taps.
@FlawedOffroad Жыл бұрын
These had the flat bottoms, but it still takes 3-4 threads to get the full depth cut. and the hole is so shallow it bottoms out still, hence why I cut one of them down
@larryjanson4011 Жыл бұрын
there is also a pressure valve inside the pump. two styles really, you want the shorter one (no washer). these are factory parts. hit the wreckers and disassemble some pumps. one part to unscrew, and remove the part inside.
@FlawedOffroad Жыл бұрын
I have read theres a way to bump the pressure by adding a washer in there. Good info that theres a different style. DO you know what models? I never did that part, I wanted to just start with the hole but I may change that up

So I went ahead and got the PSC Ram,1.75" 8" stroke a while back and am now reading of people having slow steering as opposed to the 1.5 inch ram. My thinking was power and rod size (.75" against .625") . Now I'm thinking I shoulda gone with the Surplus ram especially it having a 1" rod. Part of the reason I also got the PSC was I had a Quadratec gift certificate 😁. Since then prices have shot up, Now thinking I should sell it and easily recoup my money and get the surplus.
@FlawedOffroad2 жыл бұрын
The ball joint deals on the surplus ram are not as nice or adjustable, and if they wear out they are not replacable. Other than that, they are stout cylinder, rebuild kits are cheap. The real key is in the pump/supply side. This system I built works well but I have still gotten pretty bound up a few times. Im not sure if it was just a few of those weird spots on the trail that you cant power through, or if my fluid side is underpowered. but Its never been "slow", the ram keeps up with as fast as I can turn the wheel

I'm in the process of installing the same ram as you. I've read that some people are having slower steering in one direction since the 1" rod is taking up alot of space in the 1.5" bore on one side of the port. I hope I worded that in a understandable way... Lol Have you noticed any difference in speed from turning left vs right? Thanks again, another great vid! 👍
@FlawedOffroad2 жыл бұрын
No but I haven’t exactly had it out doing donuts yet or anything that would require super fast steering. In fact I have yet to even feel it restricting how fast I turn the wheel if that makes sense
@FlawedOffroad2 жыл бұрын
Ive been thinking about what you said but if you boil it down, it runs off of pressure. the same pressure can exist on the side with the ram. as long as theres enough space to equal whatever the max flow is(like through the hoses and fittings) then I dont see it being a bottleneck. and i think 1/4" all the way around the shaft inside the ram is enough.

Great video. I have a question about your set up tho, why are you running shackles in the front? Shackle reversal mod has been a popular and worthy upgrade to a yj even on stock axles. You want the shackles in the rear for wheeling it helps the spring/axle flex over the terrain smoother
@FlawedOffroad2 жыл бұрын
I am not a fan of shackle reversal. To me it’s a street jeep mod

Why did you chose the swivel ends on the ram instead of fix like others?
@FlawedOffroad2 жыл бұрын
Because as you steer the tie rod moves closer/farther from the axle so it needs to move a bit. Psc or any other one you can buy has heims or some type of swivel
@7t2z28 Жыл бұрын
I love surplus center for hydraulics. They have about anything you could want, and let's be honest, a ram is a ram. About the only thing you get from PSC that is of any real advantage is the higher flow power steering pump, and the benefit everything in one package. To me, that still doesn't make it worth what they want for those kits.
@FlawedOffroad Жыл бұрын
I mean their rams have replaceable Heim joints on the end but you know how many of those I’ve seen ripped the threads out on the trail? So I’ll take my chances with my cheap nonreplaceable ends lol

@@FlawedOffroad Gotcha. I just finished assist on my YJ today. So far seems good. One finger I can turn to the right, but going left is a bit harder. Seems kinda jerky going left. Just curious if you had over having same issue.

@@tylerpratt7124 mines not like that. Are you sure you got all the air bled out, or that your ram isnt at a bad angle making it bind?
@tylerpratt7124 Жыл бұрын
@@FlawedOffroad I have the ram angled slightly like 5 degrees. I’m wondering if I don’t have it bled all the way. But I do have a heim that is squealing. Maybe it’s dragging a bit?
@FlawedOffroad Жыл бұрын
@@tylerpratt7124 I would check for binding. best way I found to bleed system is jack front end up and steer back and forth lock to lock like 100 times with engine off. then try starting it and set up your phone or a camera on it, or better yet find someone else to steer for you with it still in air and look for anything odd. try again with on ground same method. Hope that helps
@vapeking88822 жыл бұрын
why would you need spacer to limit the amount of stroke in the steering as it is pressure limited wont it just pressure releave and stop the ram
@FlawedOffroad2 жыл бұрын
I read mixed things whether the stock box actually relieves when it maxes out or not. Plus with my setup nothing is stock and I figured better safe than sorry. People have been known to pop their knuckles right off tha ball joints from the Ram still forcing it against the stops
