Time for hydro assist!
This 80 series Land Cruiser needs more mods!
Last week we did the competition, but those videos will be on the ONX KZbin channel. This week I want to work my way through some more details and test them on the trail.
I want a sleeping platform, a roof rack and build out a homemade hydro assist steering system.
Enjoy the video!

Go to Harbor Freight, pick up the double garage door screen, each panel is about 8' X 8', it has magnets on 1 edge (middle), use it to screen the back of your rig so you can leave hatch and back windows open at night, cut other panel to cover door windows. Bug free fresh air sleeping.

Take the reservoir apart (It is serviceable so it does come apart) and gut the OEM filter inside of it and just run the separate inline filter that you have already. that should give you a bit more capacity and flow with less restriction.

I think I would put a barrier behind the front seats to stop all the stuff from coming forward into the area where the driver is in a rollover. There are nylon webbing that would work well. The sleeping platform looks good but a simpler sleeping arrangement would simply be a exped mega mat self inflating mattress. These mattresses are awesome and inflate to 4”. You can get their small pump to inflate it to the hardness you want. Awesome build.

Looking forward the Onyx videos coming up Nate! You asked so my opinion on the back setup would be to swap the spare & bed to the opposing sides. Reason being is better visibility with the tire directly behind you as opposed to Looking over /around it. Looks like a very capable rig capable though!👍👍

Little tip that might be useful, I have a very very similar setup in my 100 series and I get into bed from the drivers seat, can take my boots off leave them on the drivers floor and then climb through easier and don’t have to close the rear door, then in morning can climb into drivers seat put boots on and step out, no mess, no shoes on bed, all easy

I did a sleeping platform in my 80 and camped 4 seasons in it with the family probably 30 nights per year until the kiddo got too big to share the back with us. Took the scouts winter camping on Rainier up at Paradise- they slept in snow caves, I slept in the Cruiser 😂. Best overland rig I ever owned.

Yeah, 519 has a "waterfall" of sorts that flexes rigs out pretty good. Probably, the hardest obstacle at Evans. Up or down is fun. Took a guy from SoCal up there a few weeks in a nicely equipped JKUR on 37s. He said he liked rocks, it freaked him out a bit to start, but he was pumped after he ran through it.

Perfect timing. I was just looking at my 79 F-150 lifted Supercab longbed 4x4, with BBF 460 with 34's that needs more assist than the power-steering pump and gearbox it has. I was looking at the tie-rod shock absorber and wondering how to install a ram there to lessen the stresses on the pitman arm and single shear linkage. Perfect! thank you. PS, its not a rock crawler but more a over-lander camper with a rear hitch mounted motorcycle carrier.

It's so cool seeing a youtuber messing around on washington trails. While I've never been to Evans Creek, my older brother used to go out there to mess around in his 84 Bronco. I wonder if you guys ever ran into each other out there. 04 would be kind of close to when he was out there. He also used to go do the mud drags, my favorite picture was him up against a lifted cadillac. I had a 78 bronco that ended up leaving my possession due a bad trade deal but I dreamed of taking to a place live Evans and just cruising around.

Hello from the coast right outside of Galveston, Texas. At 55y/o with my bilateral bad knee's and lumbar back issues. No way I could climb up into that bed to lay down without waking up the whole forest..lol Do luv your Lexus build. Way to go. Iv'e really enjoyed all the videos. I was thinking. You should construct a removable, maybe 3/16" plate, metal hinged folding step that you could hook onto the drivers side rock slider when in camp, so that you can crawl into that drivers side back door to lay down. Would be a lot easier then going in from the cargo hatch, spinning around and then laying down.

Glad to hear you get to keep this rig in the end, was afraid all teams would be forced to give the vehicles to OnX or something. @marlene1453
@marlene1453 Жыл бұрын
It would cost OnX way to much money to keep all the vehicles. Shipping, storage, then add in the maintenance for customized rigs. Liability issues more than likely would keep them from selling the trucks to recup extra cash. If anything there could be a one year contract clause allowing OnX to retain the vehicle for shows, promotions and advertisements.

Nate, consider getting some kind of a 1/2 tent to attach/hang off the back. That way, you will have some privacy/space to change clothes while standing up. If not that, at least get some kind of screen or net to go over the back. Otherwise, you're going to get eaten alive by bugs at night.

Man I just got “done“ with a three weekend long header back exhaust build on my ‘91 80 series. What a slog it was. Got metal in my eye that sent me to the eye Dr for removal, and smashed the hell out of my right thumb. Also crawling under a car a few hundred times with out a lift is not as comfortable as it was when I was 20. It’s a bit loud, have a different muffler showing up, but it’s finally done 😅. Now I just have to replace the header gasket again after I destroyed it, and do the hundreds of other things this old girl needs 😂 happy to see you enjoying your Cruiser. Can’t wait till mine is more functional.

Hey bud, with that spare, put a anchor point on right side up high for the strap. Now pull the tyre to the side and be a lot safer. Anchoring strap to floor means the top side is very unstable and 20-30 kilos of tyre flying around in an accident or rollover is not cool. As for being a bigger lad, pop the rear top door open and have an extension for the raised board so you can sleep with head or feet further out. A little canvas work will allow you to seal it in for bogs or wildlife.

KRC power steering makes some nice power steering reservoir tanks. They mostly do stock car racing parts, but they have a number of remote reservoirs made of aluminum - they can get a little spendy. Speedway Motors also has some that are cheaper. Power steering coolers can be made out of a loop of steel line (Cadillac used to do this in the 70s), they don't have to be full on coolers. You can make a loop that goes around the perimeter of the radiator if space is tight.

Made an enormous reservoir that's actually part of an aluminum airbox in the front of my rig. Only thing i had to do was weld a piece of tubing to the pump because i needed something bigger. It actually turned out pretty cool.

Love Land Cruisers and you really nailed it with this one. The color is awesome. What you have accomplished keep all that stock stuff is great. I am not really an off roader but love your channel because you are such a good fabricator. I almost hate to say I might do something differently. You are so meticulous and really think things through. But the placement of the spare tire has me wondering why you didn't flip the fridge and tire to the other side with bed on passenger side. If you are on the street especially, the visibility on that passenger side seems quite restricted, at least in the video. With the spare tire behind you there would be much less intrusion on visibility. Thanks for all the great videos.

The 80series is a really good build, good to see how you can achieve without spending a fortune. My question, if you get time to reply, the radius arm bolt removal, roughly how much extra travel would you say you gain ? Seems like a simple & cheap idea that would work on a landrover.
@DirtLifestyle
@DirtLifestyle Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about a measurement but with basic driving, you can feel a huge difference in the handling. With all for bolts connected, the cruiser feels ridged, and if the front right tire drops into a hole... so does the chassis. With one of the bolts removed, the axle can freely move without binding. So, if the front right tire drops into a hole, the rest of the suspension can compensate. 👍
@Ghanim.M

I own a 70 series KZJ70, and I can tell you it's amazing how much more articulation you get once you remove the bolt. The Landy's already have much better articulation compared to Yotas. The pin idea is good if you don't daily your rig in my opinion. The bolt not only holds the radius arm in place, but the clamping force of the nut also adds support for the arms. I daily my LC70 so I carry battery impact gun and remove the bolt (which takes less than a minute) whenever I hit a tough trail.

Just cut to fit. You can cover the insulation with a material that would look like tinted blacked out windows. GREAT for sleep.

If sheering steering bolts is a problem, perhaps custom uprights with double sheer everything are in order...

If I was to keep these axles under there, then I would definitely build out some double shear arms. Right now, I'm just doing the bare minimum to make these last a while I collect parts for a 1 ton swap. 👍

Nate, I'm pretty sure I passed you the afternoon of 7/29 near Ridgeway, CO headed to Ouray. I was going the opposite way in an OD green Brute on 40's.

XPS would of been lighter for that build out area. Quite a few build campers out of it, including Australian expedition vehicles. Just an idea ✌️
