In this video we cover 5 different levels of making charcuterie boards. From surfaced lumber with simple tools anyone may own to using a full array of tools on slabs. Get creative and get making!
A Few favorite Tools Used (may be affiliate links):
#1 Spindle Sander: geni.us/Tuw3Do (Amazon)
So nice to do the insides of things. You can get cheaper ones and use a drill press (geni.us/STr3z (Amazon)) which is what I used for a couple of years, but the oscillating spindle sander for curves is fantastic!
#2 6" Bosch Sander: geni.us/edB8eE (Amazon)
A 6" variable speed ROS is so nice. I purchased this one just last year and I love the larger sanding area (it is 44% larger than a 5") and the variable speed is super nice.
#3 Dewalt Planer: geni.us/UYtt (Amazon) but recommend: geni.us/JHe5 (Amazon)
I bought my dewalt lunchbox planer used over 11 years ago and it is still going strong. I upgraded it to a shelix cutter head about 4 years ago and love it. If you can spring for it, I would get their better version the DW735.
#4 Bosch Wood Router: geni.us/qMsPQK (Amazon)
I used a bunch of different routers in this video (I have 5) but the Bosch 617EVSPK is particularly great. I just got it this last Christmas, so I wouldn't have to trade routers so often and it really is a nice machine.

This video was well done. I like the way you started with minimal tools and techniques then going with more advanced stuff. This shows that you don’t have to have a huge budget or space to make something nice like a serving board. I have been milling a hackberry tree that I fell last year for some live edge serving boards. It has some interesting grain and color in it.

Id suggest wetting the board and letting the grain rise and sanding one more time especially with a charcuterie board. Kress you are killing it.
@BuildItMakeIt
@BuildItMakeIt 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks!! Actually there is one that my wife has used a bunch of times and there is some grain raised on the sides I need to hit with some sandpaper and redo. I totally agree two grain raising since it will get wiped down is the way to go.

I love how you show the progression of tools! It helps beginners like me decide how invested I want to get before working my way up to more sophisticated tools. When you filled the smaller holes with baking soda and added super glue, is the super glue food safe?
@BuildItMakeIt
@BuildItMakeIt Жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful! Soooo....I am pretty sure super glue is not considered food safe. Probably not the best to use, but it is on the side so I wasn't too worried. I should have just continued to use the epoxy. Thanks for pointing that out.

Ahhh! Has anyone else (like in this video) used rubio then a mineral oil beeswax buff for customers? Ive been searching to see if anything could be added on top of Rubio. Does it hold up well? Thanks for the tip!

Those are great boards. Did yu just doodle for the handle templates or did you have a different aproach?
@BuildItMakeIt
@BuildItMakeIt 2 жыл бұрын
I looked at a couple of pictures of handles online and then sketched out what I liked. Then once transferred to the MDF template I refined it a little bit more with sanding.

What oil product did you recommend to treat the wood with instead of mineral oil? Nice Vid!
@BuildItMakeIt
@BuildItMakeIt Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Well the only oil I know of that will not go rancid is mineral oil. University of Wisconsin Department of Food Science did a study on it a while ago. You could try straight bees wax which should be ok. Also I have heard that fractionated coconut oil will take longer to go rancid since the fatty acids have been removed. If I couldn't use mineral oil I would probably just use bees wax. Hope that gives you some ideas.

Very nice demonstration and beautiful boards. What would you say would be the minimum width of board the board you would use? Thanks Don.
@BuildItMakeIt
@BuildItMakeIt 11 ай бұрын
Thank you. I would probably keep it a minimum of 6" I feel much less than that and the food starts to look big compared to the board. Actually the one I made from cherry with the little handle is probably my favorite of the group at this point, and it was about 6" wide.

Thank you so much for this video. I want to make boards to give away as gifts. Are you able to provide a list of the tools (for the novice) that I would need for these boards? Thank you!
@BuildItMakeIt
@BuildItMakeIt 10 ай бұрын
I think for the tools you really only need a jig saw and a palm sander. Personally I like to flatten the board so a planer would be good, but honestly just a hand saw and sand paper and you could make some simple square ones. If you so make some, I would love to see them, tag me on Instagram @builditmakeit.

Interesting that charcuterie is a cool fashion in the US. When I was a child (living in the EU) eating baguette with charcuterie was what mothers gave to the kids when they return from school, and it was looked as plain and almost poor, what was cool at that time was white bread.
@BuildItMakeIt
@BuildItMakeIt Жыл бұрын
Yeah I used to be over in Switzerland and I totally agree charcuterie is funny that it’s considered so fancy in the US now. When I was a kid we never got white bread but I had a friend who got it so I lived to go to his house just hoping for a sandwich 😂

Lunchables are one of my favorite things. If that’s medium fancy what would all the way fancy look like?
@BuildItMakeIt

I’m thinking inlay with some herringbone purfling on the edge for the full fancy. Or an epoxy river board but instead on stones, rubies and emeralds. Extra fancy that idea :)
