I think the most impressive thing about the VTEC systems is not one has ever failed. Oh and of course the boost in power when the system switches things over to the bigger cam lobe.

Sandra Rios I wasnt referring to forced induction either. Vtec is not a system that adds hp it does kick in but all it does is help the engine run more efficiently at higher rpm's and speeds, not add hp

angel olivares Are you serious? Running more efficiently at higher rpms = higher hp. The more efficient an engine is (as in reducing pumping loses with the VTEC which is what's happening when the bigger lobe is being used and increasing valve lift and duration) the more power it will have. If you increase the efficiency of an engine by reducing friction, crankshaft drag, bigger headers and ported and polished ports, etc. you increase horsepower because those things rob horsepower. In the case of VTEC, not only do the effects of running a bigger lobe, which makes the car run higher valve lift numbers and increased duration at high rpms, increase horsepower, but some horsepower is gained by recovering the lost power from pumping losses. Remember an engine is basically an air pump, and anything that improves it's efficiency "de facto" increases it's horsepower (again by regaining lost hp from the greater pumping losses of a smaller lobe). Take two engines with the same block and heads, one with VTEC will have more power at higher rpms. That's just a fact you can look up anywhere. A head with no VTEC and just stays on the regular cam lobes is going to have less power at those higher rpms that Honda engines love to run at. Tell me I'm wrong on that one.

I know how VTEC works. And yes that is what I ment by more efficiently at higher rpm's, because other non vtec engines start to struggle at higher rpm which results in less efficiency where as vtec allows the engine to, in a way, make up for the loss and keep running better all the way to the red line. Yes higher rpm = higher hp which VTEC helps you get there a bit more efficiently but its not the system itself that gives a boost in power. Maybe in a tuned engine. I will agree Hondas VTEC is a great engine but im not a biased Honda fan boy who thinks VTEC kicking in is a huge boost in hp and speed like forced Induction as I have driven both and own a turbocharged car.

but how many of your friends do you get with you? sorry but as i saw it many of these little engines struggled to reach 250km/h and my volvo estate does that with 4 of my friends in it. as i see it Vtech is a great way to save fuel at low rpm's but does not really give any advantages besides that. not hating on hondas tho, only the honda fanbase is toxic as hell...

I'd get 0 friends with me in that case. But be able to take a tight turn at 100 km/h. If my nearest circuits had long straights and were generally fast, iId need a different set up, as you pointed out. Taking your tastes into account, I could suggest a 1+1 track car, with a 200BHP engine. It should weight no more than 450 KG with fluids. You could easily reach 250, and take 1 friend with you. And also, get better lap times than sports cars 10 times as expensive as yours.

SalveMonesvol got a volvo 240 estate track car, surely not a handling car no but there is a fun factor to use a estate and it drift's better then some nissan's s13's i have seen xD a bit more than 500 horses at the wheels from the "slightly rebuild" b23 engine and gearbox and drivetrain from a corvette, but drivetrain was the most expensive part of the build.... but here in scandinavia volvo's are cheap and we don't really lack money to use so i amongst many others use them as track cars, as the chassi of a car don't really need to be expensive to get a good track car.

With more than 345.000 km´s (yes threehundred and fourty five thousand km's) on my Honda Integra Type R DC2 1998 (owner from new), with the original engine still in the car and untouched (only regular services at the dealers) and with the original exhaust still in place, I am very happy with my Honda!! I drive it just as my classic Alfa Romeo's. Check the oil regularly and be gentile with the car during the first 20 km's untill the engine oil is warm, Than you can do almost everything with, like reving it to 8400 RPM. Enjoy!

So im a muscle guy myself. But my friends dad has an 2009 s2000 in red and its pretty sick. Its also very fast! His mom has a 2009 honda I+vtec and its also a very cool car. It handles amazing and off the line its honestly seat pinning. Its all stock. Its a manual and when you rev it its so loud it makes people jump. Its good for little kids on bikes at a stop sign. I hate ricers and I think they need to die. But nothing beats the sweet sound of a mustang with glass packs.

Vtec doesn't just mean varable valve timing. Vtec engines have two different sized lobes on the camshaft, the regular lobe and the Vtec lobe. The first one is smaller and is used for lower rpms and a larger lobe is activated at 5800 rpm which makes the valves open a greater distance and for a longer period (lift and duration). That's why it kicks in.

VTEC is a particular Engine System developed by Honda. Just like many Other Systems out there in many other engines developed by numerous Manufacturers and Engineers. People who own engines equipped with this particular system tend to love the crossover, because of the aggressive sound it makes, and the rarity amongst engines. ( no other engine changes sound so drastically. ) That is one part of the story though..! They also love their engine because of: EXTREME MOTHER F*CKING DURABILITY.

Ben Meyer vtec is short for variable valve time and electronic control so if you have ever heard of vvit or vvc its similar what it does is changes the valve lift to allow for a more efficient stroke rather than fuel economy( civics are know for) you can research it more its really cool!

I always love German cars over Japanese cars even though I am a Japanese. even though I would never buy a old car for any car. like the old civic or old BMW or audi. this was one of my friends car and it was just amazing. It was my first time enjoying a powerful car without turbocharged engines.....i would like to own one old GTR or Honda or....it's start to become a maniac. I learn that cars r not only about technology and latest features and how premium it is.

As I tell everyone with the fartcan jokes... I have a k20 Civic with an Ebay catback and what I thought would sound like a "fartcan" but the shit sounds like a Subaru! No joke its actually very deep sounding until vtec pops then its all bwahhh from there to redline. Trust me, there are Civics out there that sound pretty good, not like rattling beer cans. Also, that 200hp on that little 2,000 lb car equals 400 hp on your muscle car... Once you add in weight, you need more power to carry the weight. All the torque does is carry the heavy car until you get up into the more premium trim levels then you are talking serious performance. Hondas to me are more of fun street cars rather than race cars. But I have taken my car to the strip for shits and giggles but circuits I get serious

Your k20 does not sound like a boxer engine. Sorry to tell you. Unless you have uneven headers (which create the "Subaru" sound" then it's physically impossible.

Ok it doesn't sound like its farting or have the turbo noise from them, but blah blah blah. Its just the closest comparison I can honestly come up with. Still doesn't sound like the stereotypical Honda. But the K20 is known for that deeper tone than the old school B Series DOHC engines. If you turbocharge a K20 or K24, you honestly cant really distinguish the noise from a Subaru unless you are talking about the "boxer noise." Even then, it just sounds like it is farting. That is the only difference in noise lol. Even the NA noise on a K is pretty nasty with the right setup. Most of mine is exhaust noise that I was talking about. But even before when I had my stock exhaust, I loved hearing the noise it made when I would put my foot down and let it breathe. Something about the K that just makes me love it.
