Awesome video. What's the advantage of setting up this whole rig versus running something like an A7 or another all-in-one mirrorless camera? Is the goal mostly to get up to the 4k/120? Or are there other advantages to using the iPhone specifically? I am a brand newbie.

I ordered the new Smallrig x Brandon Li collab cage. It’s got a built in usb hub, the handles are quick release and can attach at multiple points around the cage. They also slide so you can have them high or low while attached to the same point. The right handle is an enclosure for an M.2 NVME SSD and the button on top will start/stop recording with Bluetooth but also has a wheel for zoom control. It also has a mount for a VND filter which it comes with. Seemed like a way better thought out solution than piecing it out myself. It’s supposed to come in October

Recvd mine last Thursday and a caveat with the kit is that the cable configuration as shown in the promo ads are wrong. Use a Thunderbolt 3 or newer cable that’s capable of 40 gbs and you won’t have a problem with the SSD card…but you still have to get something within SR’s recommendation. Definitely more streamlined than this and the arca Swiss adapter is great!

Yes, that's a good cage system - I went with Neewer's 16 Pro cage because I wanted to attach BeastGrip lenses as well as some others - and Neewer so far seems the only one that is offering a backplate for 37mm thread lens. Also, Moment just launched a kickstarter for their SuperCage which has NATO rails on the sides and top, and arca swiss on the bottom, and a USB-C hub with an SD 4.0 card slot. Overall I think a cage like SmallRig and Neewer offers a lot more variety of options - you can start compact and build out as the shooting situation demands.

Technical question: How many hours can you record continuously with the configuration shown in the video? I need to record at least 3 hours straight in 4K at 60 frames per second, at least two or three times consecutively, for recording conferences and courses. Additionally, I would like to know if the Anker Hub USB-C 555 would allow me to connect a Hollyland Pyro 4K transmitter to simultaneously broadcast what is being recorded on the iPhone 16 Pro Max to a large screen. In summary, I want to know if I can use the configuration you show in the video to record in 4K at 60 frames per second, stream to a large screen at the same time, and even connect Hollyland Lark M2 microphones to record the audio. Is it possible to do all of this with the setup you demonstrate in the video? *This translation was made using an online translator, so if there are any errors, I apologize for them.
@beardfm2 ай бұрын
I would have to test the hours recorded, but I've seen other KZbinrs go 2+ hours recording to an external SSD. And unfortunately I don't have that audio transmitter to test.

Stephen, great videos. Question though...after buying most of the items here and getting my rig pretty close to action, I'm having issues with the Anker USB hub. Apple seems to think its' not possible to use a USB-C hub with an iPhone 16 / 16pro. And after buying it, plus the anker power pack, an SSD, Rode mic, etc, I'm finding the same thing to be true. Each gadget works when connected to the iPhone directly, but none work when connected through the Anker. How were you able to get it to work?
@beardfm2 ай бұрын
You bought the same Anker one I linked? And if you test just two things, will that work? Power + SSD for filming?

Hi Stephen i've been having problems with my Samsung T7 shield ssd. I can't record more than 15seconds of footage and its not even in the highest resolution. The overheating icon pops up even if I had just used it and has mentioned to have had drop frames hence the pause in the recording. This SSD storage icon also blinks all the way after that

Are you using the cable that came with the SSD or something else?

NVME PCIe 4.0 & 5.0 require more than the 4.5w the iPhone is capable of delivering. I beleive the PCIe 3.0 is ok... you'll still get awesome read/write speeds, way beyond the minimum 450mb/s Apple requires for 4k @ 120fps.
@therobpratt3 ай бұрын
Stephen thanks for the video - I'm wondering how much testing you've done with the T7 recording 4K120 - in the linked YT video the reviewer / tester is reporting lower FPS - 98-100 and running into issues on longer recordings. As for cages / rigs - I went with the Neewer cage for 16 Pro, BeastGrip lenses... although I'd be tempted one day with Tilta's 16 Pro update on their Khronos cage line. I think Tilta, SmallRig (collab with Brandon Li), Neewer are worth keeping an eye on - and Moment just launched a Kickstarter for their SuperCage. I'd also find it interesting to see if a Gimbal system comes out that has compatible controls for starting/stopping recording and zoom in/out - without requiring their own proprietary app. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqPIdH6AmNJ4nbM

Honestly, I did forget that. For ProRes filming I'm usually focused on b-roll and not recording audio. But if you need it, I'd recommend the DJI 2 or Rode Wireless Go II which can record locally on-device and you can sync later, or attach the receiver via the USB hub, which will then record that audio to the iPhone video.
