I will also say that my "5 years" of studying after I graduated was VERY INCONSISTENT. I would practice and learn for 2 months, then nothing for 6 months. This is why it has been taking me such a long time! Don't do that- just be consistent and push through the hard days! :)

This was super helpful!! I already have half the sources you mentioned saved on my accounts AND the book, I just need to actually be consistent and stop fearing sounding stupid😅

YES! I sound silly and make mistakes every single day! And hey- that’s part of trying :) I think about it like this- I would never make fun of anyone for making a mistake in English; I would just say oh did you mean this? And then we have a laugh &move on !!

I did Spanish for three years in highschool and most of my friends spoke Spanish, so the class always felt VERY effortless. Then I went to college and didn’t have as many Spanish speaking friends anymore, so I forgot a lot. I decided to minor in Spanish, took 4 semesters, but had to drop the minor bc of schedule conflicts. I’m trying to pick it back up again 3 years later bc my boyrfirends family ALSO only speak Spanish. But they refuse to speak to me slowly because “that isn’t how people really talk” so I just sit there watching them talk feeling absolutely lost.

Aw im so sorry! That can be a great way to pick things up- it can seem frusterating but maybe try to grab and understand words and phrases here and there to piece it together! Don’t worry- you will get better with time. I am rooting for you!! You can do this!

You aren’t alone ! I come from a family of Mexicans and Peruvians (both Spanish speaking) I’ve been hanging out with a lot of my Mexican family members recently and all of them speak Spanish fluently and it’s their first language and all of them also learned English, so a lot of the times everyone is speaking in Spanish forgetting I only understand very little and if it’s spoken slowly. So there is a lot of me looking back and forth trying really hard to understand what is going on, sometimes I don’t understand at all and when others laugh I laugh and nod my head and act like I know what’s happening haha, sometimes some of my family members will remember and actually try to translate to their best of their ability (but this doesn’t happen all that often). I’ve always wanted to learn Spanish since I was younger but my mother never took teaching me seriously (yes even my mom speaks Spanish, but growing up she mainly spoke to me in English so that’s why I only understand very little Spanish.) My family will even put on Spanish reality drama shows (NO SUBTITLES, I’ve asked for them to put them on too haha) and I just sit there like uuummmm what’s happening 🤣 although it is frustrating in moments like that just know you aren’t alone and there are also others in similar situations also trying to learn and get better with their Spanish. Keep up the practicing and one day we will get it and look back and be so proud of our accomplishments!
