In this episode, we FINALLY get started on building a covered work area for the sawmill. Last year we did all the site prep with the excavator and waited one year for the ground to settle. Now it is time to set some piers and pour a pad for the mill.

Wow, this brought back memories of my Dad pouring concrete sidewalks and a patio. Also the basement floor, back in the mid 60’s. Our house was built in 1840 with an addition in 1895 so the basement was a lovely dirt floor! He worked so hard making this house a wonderful place to grow up. They bought it in 1960 for 4,000.00 at a tax auction. Now Dad is gone and Mom can’t care for herself so my husband and I live here with Mom. When she is gone we have decided to purchase the house from the estate to keep it in the family. What wonderful memories… ♥️👍🙏🇺🇸🤓

Really enjoyed watching this video. I'm old enough to remember Montgomery Wards and appreciate that things were made so much more durable back then. I am preparing some of my land currently to build a 64'x80' post frame barn. I am drilling the piers and using my MudMixer to pour my own piers. I'm excited about that. THEN (like you) I will build my sawmill shed to go over my 4 year old Woodland Mills HM126. Better late than never.

You might of enjoyed being my neighbor.... I had a couple old international trucks that were at best "Stay within a mile of the house" rigs. I owned a mixer that had poured the bunkers in san francisco in an about 1900. A five and a half yard mixer that weighed ... lets just say a lot! I took it off of the portable trailer and mounted it on one of the trucks that was just long enough to hold the mixer, and because it was a cab forward truck, it was really short and so easy to just put anywhere you wanted. I ran the mixer off of a PTO on the truck so running that mixer was dumb simple. The other truck had a live bed set up so that the bags of cement that came in thirty five hundred pound bags or really big bulk cement bags. It cost the same for the large bag as ten store bought ready mix. Cheap is the word of the day and the other hopper had sand for the mix. I have poured my one floor in one day that was a forty by sixty slab. Six inches thick as well ... I guess that is important also. My son has a ford tractor that is fairly large and really takes the work out of things. He also has the last mill I ever built but he had to do all the work... after all, he is just a kid at fifty nine.... I am a touch older as I am his still robbing air from the young dad. I went in for a new pump on monday, the seventh and was going under the knife, the doctor stopped it and said put him back on meds, he won't survive this operation! So its suffer some more, and really, a dirt nap is not a good nap. I am wishing you all the luck in the world Troy, my your kids ain't little anymore either. Looking at some favorite pictures of my son when he was about seven... almost fifty three years ago! Build and then put the mill under it because it will give the best plan over all just how your going to want to set it forever. Even then, a move might still be in a someday plan... hug that pretty lady of yours for me

We put a i beam over the mill. Two trollies. One with a wintch from harbor frieght to lift and turn the logs. Left it sticking out 4 ft. Can slid logs in from the end. Use the winch on one end and tractor on other. Now ,we have the extention so we can do 25 ft. Just a idea.

Get the mill in its place and cut the pieces you need for the cover rite there, even pour another slab to extend the cutting capacity of your machine.

You will definitely want to put the mill on the slab and build the shed around it. You got to make things as difficult as possible.

I would go ahead and move the mill Everything you cut for the shed will be off bared right there and can be stacked on level concrete for drying without double moving the lumber

Move the Mill then build the shed. You will be amazed of what you didnt think of in the planning stage. You are correct it will be a pain but I guarantee you will figure something out you didnt think of.

Looks great. I was surprised at the cost on putting the pad and piers. Expected it to be more. That is going to be so worth it especially after getting the shed built. Flat surface, under cover. Still impressed as the Devil at your dad. Still going strong and active instead of sitting around. Great memory of three generations working together. 👍👍

Cost was acceptable. I still gasp at $17 bags of Portland when it was under $10 5 years ago. Blessed beyond measure to have dad help me. I couldn’t believe he spent all day on his knees working the concrete.

Your mill in on wheels, move it once your concrete is cured. Mill your beams and materials. Simply pull the mill out one end, build the shed, back the mill into place, and relevel it.

Very similar to our mill shed build. We mixed our piers by hand (10 @ 4' deep for our northern climate) but ordered concrete for the slab. You'll appreciate the shed for sure. Looking forward to the progression of your build.

Just to amuse me: Could someone explain the method? To me it looks like soil under the concrete. It lives when it gets wet, when it freezes and when it dries. Here we take the soil away, gravel instead, sometimes insulation and then concrete. Just to prevent shifting/moving when temperatures change... And rebaring can easily (and cheaply) be tied with small zipties. If one orientates them right the long part points down into the slab so no cutting is necessary. And a nice video once again, thank you 👍🏼😋!

If it gets rained on give it a solid week of dry weather to finish curing so you do not get fractures in your base. I would give it at least 4 days of curing without being rained on. After that I would suggest moving the mill into place as it will be oh so much easier getting it into place before posts go up to support your roof.

Nice work! When you're done could y'all come across the ridge and build one over at my mill. It won't pay anything and I'll allow you to film it for the channel but I won't complain about your work as much as the pigs did and I won't take a bite out of your tire. Also I can't believe you did this work 2 years ago and just now released the video. After all you let the cat out of the bag at 25:11 that it was "2020"

Well I'll be dipped. All my construction life close to 40 years I have called them batten boards. I was going to rip you a new one. Then I thought to myself you better check afore you rip on Troy. Cause he's usually right. Batter boards is correct according to Mr Google pants. Do not fret however I am sure I'll find something else to rip on you about. Maybe starting with your haircut.
