aside from picking up some useful guitar tips (i'm an accomplished player) i tune in to this channel just to hear andrew speak. his rich musical vocabulary, the way he articulates his ideas, the flow and sound of his voice..its soothing ..i can listen to him speak all day, and what he says is typically informative..a natural orator !

Thank you so much for taking your time to share your gift. As one who has just played chords to support vocals for decades, this tutorial is of great value. I have always played an acoustic guitar, but recently became interested in electric. I have never concentrated on scales, and generally lay back when an opportunity to take a solo guitar break comes my way. I have always admired those who had the chops for that. What you have done here is to provide a simple way to develop such skills and avoid chasing after every shiny object possible. I have come to understand much of the theory behind this, it is really now a matter of practice, practice, practice. I now see a clear path to jumping on that break in a future jam. Thanks again for this!

First we learn the boxes, then we have to un-learn the boxes. This is a great way to quickly unlearn the boxes and apply it across the neck.

This is helpful and an easy way t o practice ! So the first root note we play will always be the 6th note we play from the lowest register?
@JohnDAvery-tf4td5 жыл бұрын
If you mean that the minor scale root is a major 6th above the relative major scale root, then yes. However, the major scale root is only a minor third above its relative minor scale root.

So is each major/minor pattern the same pattern in any key as long as the root note is the starting point? The major pattern is used in any key, the minor pattern is used in any key starting from the root note?
@guyfromnj5 жыл бұрын
Simon Ritchie as far as I know I believe that is the case. It's where you start that determines the key. So if you learn the minor scale in G starting with the G on the 6 string 3rd fret you can then move that shape to any starting point and the key changes to whatever you need. The actual shape stays the same. So you can slide everything up 2 frets to A minor on the 5th fret etc etc. obviously the shape will change slightly in open position because of the open strings but it's still the same shape technically. Same goes for major shapes. I think that's how it goes. Same goes for shapes starting on the 5th string.
@samkadi54435 жыл бұрын
Simon, it has to do with relative major and minor scales. In C major (Ionian), the notes are C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C. The notes in A minor (Aeolian) are A, B, C, D, E, F, G, A. IT has the exact same notes as C major, they are relative major/minor scales. If you focus on and return to the C and the chords you are playing are mostly major chords then you are in C major. If you flip it and land mostly on A and play the minor chords you are in A minor. Same pattern but the root changes from the C to the A. It takes a bit to get but think about the major scale and if you watch some more videos on relative major and minor you will get it. Hope that helps. In short, its the same notes (pattern) that Andrew has here, but it depends on the chords your playing over it and where home is.
@frykof5 жыл бұрын
It is a bit hard for me to see the point. So you took the "A minor" scale, and instead of playing it from the root on the 6th string, you play the 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 notes each on the string tuned one higher. So instead of playing those notes on the 6th and 5th strings, you play the equivalent notes in the 5th and 4th strings. How does that make any difference, or make the scale any more useful, than just playing all 2 octaves of the scale in the 5 frets from the 4th fret to the 8th fret, in a vertical box, more or less the standard way in which the scale is taught and played?
@om78135 жыл бұрын
I feel dumb asking, but I am very new to guitar playing. How do you read the scale pattern that is being shown? How do you know where to put your finger down and it what order? A part of the diagram shows black dots on nearly every string of the same fret. Any information would be greatly appreciated

how do you get that wonderful warm tone?
@D00GNUKEM.5 жыл бұрын
Newcastle under Lyme town centre and more he is running mini humbuckers in bridge and neck position in that Strat. If you’re playing a guitar with single coil pickups you’ll have a hard time duplicating that exact same tone. Would honestly be easier to accomplish on a Gibson than it would on the average fender.
@D00GNUKEM.5 жыл бұрын
It also sounds like he is using a tube amp which all naturally have a warmer fuller tone than most DSL amps out there. You can kind of mimic this sound by adding a small amount of reverb

ERIQ J same pattern just move everything down one string. E 578 B. 578 G. 457 D. 457 A. 2357 E 0235 Or just keep going up diagonally in octaves. E. 7-8-10-12 B. 7-8-10 G 4579 D. 457 A 2357 E0235 G major/E minor. Or how ever you want to do it

Do you have that pattern on something I can print out at home?
@D00GNUKEM.5 жыл бұрын
Joe Cormier just a tip that worked for me! I actually bought a notebook and write all my scale positions and patterns and everything out by hand. Draw the neck. Number the frets and draw circles on all the notes in the scale. I write the actual note letters Inside those circles. And it has helped me in memorizing the neck SOOOOOOO much.
