Thanks for the detailed review. Surprised with the Power Extra results though. A few months ago, bought the Power Extra battery for my Nikon D300, it lasts a lot longer than the original Nikon battery according to my brother. He tested both batteries from Power Extra, same results.

Another thing that should be tested is how good is shelf life. I've heard some of the 3rd party batteries start losing their charge as soon as you take them out of the charger while some will discharge to zero, on there own, in a day.

Nice review. However what you didn’t cover was longevity. I’ve had generic batteries that performed great for the first several charges, but quickly degraded and were useless in a few months. I’d also be skeptical of battery life claims. Batteries are like transformers, size is everything. You literally cannot cram more “power” into the same size battery, unless you change the formulation (NiCad vs LiFe for example), or by altering the internal resistance, which can have negative side effects.

Very nice test I appreciate it. HOWEVER, I have friends who used the top replacement batteries you tested like Duracell, and unfortunately they don't perform well UNDER SUN. I think it would be very useful if one did a test under hot conditions too. Again, thanks for the wonderful video ;)

with an alleged capacity of... if the capacity is a lot higher than the oem something isnt right. Most likely they are lying and its probably the same or more likely less. If its a lot cheaper battery probably has higher internal resistance which means less run time and more heat during discharge.

Im thinking about taking my camera in to get repaired at the sony place out my way, i lose 3% battery every 60 seconds, i dont remember my camera ever draining this fast, i even bought some brand new batteries thinking maybe it was the battery but nope, same thing with the new batteries, i watched the camera lose 40% battery life in 12 minutes of continuous recording at 120 fps smh, do you have this issue or maybe any advice?

I'm not sure I experience as bad of a drain, but my batteries feel like they're draining much faster as they did WHEN I got the camera. I'm blaming the 4k, coz at first I didn't shoot much 4k now I never shoot 1080p :)

Just found your video, I have been interested in this subject myself, I have a Sony a6000 and yes the Sony batteries are costly compared to the aftermarket batteries, I did find your test interesting the one battery you did not test that seems to be popular is a brand called Wasabi (Maybe not available in the UK?) I'm not here to be critical but Mr. Freeman does bring up a point longevity and I do wonder if they lose capacity over time faster than the Sony battery? that would be a long test. I personally stick to the branded batteries myself even though they cost more I had a bunch of the aftermarket batteries when I bought my a6000 but I found out I can get by with two-three batteries and I have USB two battery charger and the Sony does not take long to charge up, I can even use my power bank with the USB charger. I don't shoot a ton images at most of my gigs I shoot 300 to 400 images. So I'm good with my battery situation, I can get by with two but like more than I need just in case. The Sony is not my main camera my Canon DSLR does that but there are occasions and situations the a6k is the better choice, like when people are nervous with the DSLR, with the Sony they don't have a care or places that have restrictions on "professional" equipment the Sony slips right in even though its almost the equal of the DSLR. I did like your test and find the results interesting especially the Sony battery. Thanks and Cheers.

+Donald Kline thanks for you comment! It was something I had always wondered and then made the video to share with everyone. I don't have an official source to confirm that the sony branded batteries last longer, in theory it makes sense, but I personally haven't seen it happen in practice yet. :)

I agree it would be interesting but who has the time, money or patience to do that LOL, I don't shoot a lot of images at my gigs so I'm not a heavy user of battery power I get by normally with one battery maybe two but I have three with me just in case. I also keep spares for my DSLR as well. Never know and why chance it.

New lithium batteries after very long time of storage need at least three times of full discharge and full recharge in order to reach their maximum capacity. Also another aspect of the quality of a battery quality is the maximum times of full recharge before a significant loss in capacity. Of course this is hard to be measured because it requires very long time and patience. Nearly always the original batteries of various manufacturers of cameras are multiple times more expensive than third party ones. It is a source of serious revenues for camera companies. The NP-FW50 was introduced with the Sony NEX mirrorless cameras in 2010. Keep in mind the not all third party batteries have the firmware required to be compatible with the Sony a7 series of cameras which was introduced later in 2013. From my experience Duracell NP-FW50 isn't compatible with the Sony a7 neither the white EX-Pro battery. The black EX-Pro NP-FW50 is compatible with the Sony a7 series. The compatibility is usually clearly indicated in the battery description. Avoid buying original batteries from eBay. They are usually know offs. It is very easy to be rebranded with fake package and branding. The original Sony NP-FW50 has a hologram security sticker for that reason but also that probably can be copied.

@@theTechNotice yes indeed...very well done...but...do you know the brans... "brave heart"..?They also got a big collection of camera-batterie's and chargers...very IN-expensive (cheap)..I want to try them..for my Sony RX100VA.. brave heart = 3x batterie's + double charger for only 25$ .. grtz
