PSA: Surge Slash combo actually leaves you with a total of at least three options on how to get into your normal charged combo anyway! You do not have to lose the old combo. Adamant Charged Slash takes you into your strong slash, Hunting Edge also takes you into a charged slash, but aerial, and just pressing block, kick and then tackle gets you back into old combos.

@@KidBowsur Monster Hunter always has been and most likely always will be a time attack game at its core. Otherwise hunts simply wouldn’t have a timer. And in literally every TA game every made, there is a meta. Meaning the fastest way to accomplish the ultimate goal (in this case completing the hunt). You’re version of fun is not better than anyone else’s and a lot of people prefer to play the game under the notion that having a fast clear time is the goal, it’s what they enjoy. Which, let’s be real, everyone who plays MH gets excited when they beat their hunt time record for whatever hunt they are doin. Josh even acknowledges that if you find it fun, then go ahead, but a guide is meant to give you the most effective method to do something and SS is not the most effective method.

I'll be honest, getting strongarm to work as a playstyle has been the most frustrating experience so far. It seems like all I do is whiff and get hit because a lot of monster moves are either combos or just go beyond your reach. Be very interested to see this work on every monster, because I'm sure it just doesn't work on stuff like ZInogre, Teostra, Seregios to name a few. Atm I suspect there's a reason why the speedrun attempts are all Garungholm and Astalos lol.

I love surge slash, i played GS for a long time and Surge has been such a blast for me, and with the switching of loadouts on the fly, its kind of like the best of both worlds mid hunt. Carry some barrel bombs, adjust when needed depending on the monster if I'm not so comfortable or am very familiar with the moves. Even though it isn't meta, I'll always have surge slash combo ready for some fun, because whats hunting without the fun. A good way for Greatsword to go through monsters combo attacks (like 3 times attacks for exemple) is to get the stun immunity talent (don't know its name since I play in french and thus know it as "Crâne d'acier"). It allows you to tackle trough as many attacks as your health bar allows you to to then land the juicy strongarmed true slash when the monster finally go for a heavier move. It is quite technical since tackle have a very limited mobility but strongarm stance's 360 range help it a lot. And since stun immunity is accessible at full level with only one lvl 4 décoration at the very beginning of master rank it gets really usefull (I used to get stunned every 2 or 3 tackle in base rise with my Valstrax set wich was very infuriating). I also like to combine it with the "earthquake" immunity, the windblast immunity and a nullification of small attacks flinches to gain in stability

Surge slash pairs very well with adamant. It lets you skip into the charging, for when you want to charge attack. I have my normal strongarm TCS scroll, and a surge slash, adamant charge, rage slash scroll. If i'm fighting something I can't get the timing for, blue scroll time and I can still red scoll for downs.

Focus is still needed in multiplayer because while you may pull off a few Strong armed stances you're not going to be doing them back to back, therefore when the monster's attention is divided normal charging with Focus is still required. Same as Quick Sheathe is still going to make you buff quicker and make your mobility quicker for both evading and getting in on the monster to attack quicker. Even Speed Eating increases attack because the less time you have to wait to heal the quicker you can hit a monster when you see an opening, otherwise you might miss whilst waiting to too long to heal. Anything that increases speed increases DPS output. Speed skills are both luxury and DPS increases.

I feel like I'm doing something wrong with Strongarm. I just got it and used it in two fights against Zinogre where it honestly felt useless because either: A. He has a combo attack, so I get knocked out before I can charge. B. The Strongarm doesn't stop him, so while I counter, he runs through, and I can hit nothing.
@maxramirez6821

On a fast target like zinogre you need to look for the few moves he stands still on after. You can hit his head or legs by countering his tail slam and his claw slam. Use small barrel bombs to break tail whenever you knock it over

@@maxramirez6821, after a lot more practice, Strongarm feels good on everything, but MR Zinogre. Him being fast is fine, the problem is because a lot of his hits register as the hit itself and chip damage, you get stunned after two hits.

Possible endgame use for Surge Slash: resurgence of Crit Draw playstyle. With the way Crit Draw now works, you should be able to land all three hits of the combo before it wears off. Since Surge Slash doesn't use focus, you can straight swap it for crit draw, and since crit draw will be covering 60% of your affinity, you can swap out either Crit Eye, or Weakness exploit for more RAW enhancing skills. The combat loop would simply be Surge Slash Combo>Power Sheath>Reposition> Repeat. It wouldn't be Meta breaking, but it gives you those three things that made Crit Draw appealing: Respectable damage, Safe Playstyle, and precise hits.

I like the surge combo but sometimes my tackle reflex gets me killed; you lose a couple of your entry points to the tackle you normally have with the charge combo. The backslide feels wonky and as much as I've tried learning it in the training room, I've yet to get consistent movement results. Backslide with guard tackle is really good for pulling yourself back to the monster at least.

What worries me is that Strongarm stance might be too strong and centralizing for the weapon, similar to how the pizza cutter was just the better option for charge blade in base rise. I like how it works initially but I would have preferred that the instant guard be 1 bug and if you chose to do follow-up charge that be another bug so that there are points in the fight where its not charge counter repeat.

It's only too strong for speed runners, like everything. I've been trying to use it all day and i swear I've never used potions and carted as much. it seems awful gainst half the roster. Most monster attacks go sailing past you making you constantly whiff. Other moves have multi hits which kick you on your butt. Other moves can be countered but the monsters moves away too quickly (this is literally Zinogre. He doesn't appear to have any moves that can be strong arm TCSed). Some monsters with good movement mechanics are really easy to exploit with it, like tigrex and espinas. But shit that just zooms around everywhere with multi hits like Teo are a nightmare. The majority of monsters maybe have 1 or 2 attacks that can be countered for a return of damage, but it almost feels like a lottery fishing for them. It doesn't help that the button inputs for it are janky as fuck. You can start a draw charge and the game just refuses to read your attempt to strong arm for like .3 milliseconds With that said I think the barrel bomb thing is kinda dumb. If they wanna nerf anyway they should make bombs not activate it.

I disagree with pizza cutter being the better option. Despite the phial hitbox issue (which is now fixed in the new update), I still played exclusively SAED playstyle in base Rise. CSS also feels too clunky for my liking imo, despite the new switch skills.

Love the content, thank you for answering things I was already theorizing about. I will have to say I just don't think I'm good enough to master the block in order to do the most damage, especially since I'm often playing with friends and not solo which it feels like that technique desperately wants. So I will absolutely leave that on my secondary scroll so I can give monsters a massive wake up call Ah La little bomb combo as you displayed. But as for general fighting I have been loving paring adamant slash with rage slash and the new surge slash. Yes you lose the hyper armor from tackle while Surge slashing, but if you ever feel in danger, going into adamant slash seems to do the trick which allows you to then start the ol' tackle/rage mechanics.

From watching videos of the Strongarm Slash in action (Especially the clips in this video), it has me confident that we could see damage numbers beyond 10,000 before the end of Sunbreak's cycle. We could get there earlier if someone manages to do something simular to what TDS did in their recent "The Highest Damage Number in Monster Hunter Rise" video. But then again, that's not including the balance patches that'll make it more challenging. In base rise I got tired of LS and hesitantly switched to GS. I've grown to love the weapon and have gotten pretty good at it over time. I like what Sunbreak's done by adding more of a learning curve to it's new moves and I like to think they made the most of the new skills for the weapons this strong because the monsters in Sunbreak were going to be that much sronger. In my opinion Sunbreak GS is the most satisfying GS i've played and GS is the most satisfying weapon to me overall. I can't wait to get even better at GS and eventually beat the game with my friend and check what Sunbreak has to offer. P.S: Sorry for the length. :)

10,000 was like a bare minimum estimate from what I was saying given the 7000+ attack Rage did. Point is we could see numbers beyond 10,000 maybe 20,000 or even higher by the end of Sunbreak. Either way, Greatsword is reaching never before seen heights and I can't wait to see massive those damage numbers can go.

I played allot of Lance for Rise + Sunbreak before starting to use GS and I think I'd still use both scrolls for different purposes because with the former uptime was king more-so than making the big meaty hits. The problem I see with the meta is that while in all the ideal circumstances you'd have two wirebugs when you'd need them, you'd still have to face monsters that like to chip hunters out and fight passive aggressively for significant amounts of time (Almudron, Blood-Orange Bishitan, Astalos etc.). Pretty much every monster has multi-hit attacks and it's far more rare to see your big finisher not have them either in Master Rank. Lance had insta-block for that which completely negated that factor with the only cost being good timing (literally zero health/stanima loss + you can do almost anything out of it, most importantly more insta-blocks). However with greatsword all of it's good readably on-hand answers to keep attacking and not just fish for hits cost 1 wirebug or giving up the stanima + health to do a tackle. I started making builds explicitly around the fact that I'd have a red scroll for with a Surge Slash Combo for the enraged moments and a blue scroll with the Charge Slash + Strongarm meta when things were less chaotic. It makes it far more flexible and I can take that added uptime doing SSC stuff to break monster parts so the trades for the blue scroll that will happen can be a non-factor because of blood rite.

Happy for True Charge, but I, unfortunately, never liked the move that much. As cool as it was in World and Rise, there's just something about the two slashes that always makes me feel awkward. I can't control it as much as Rage Slash, and as chaotic as Surge Slash is, I like the balance of speed/power it has. I don't know how I feel about Strong Arm Stance, might have to try it out more, but the two wirebug cost is a bit of deal breaker for me, at least in terms of getting a feel for it. Either way, happy for greatsword.

I know this might be a silly question, but would the skill counterstrike proc with strongarm? Or does it only proc when knocked down completely by a monster?

Oh wow. I’ve been looking to try Great sword. I usually main Hunting Horn and the damage reduction of that stance reminds me of the wire bug hunting horn move where you do a backflip and gain a concussive damage after you hit a monster. I use the move just to take less damage when I know I’ll be hit and can’t dodge or when a monster roars cause the roar doesn’t stop the move either.

Ah ok so the Focus skill doesn't benefit the charge times of Strongarm and Surge Slash because whatever charges they have won't get any faster

actually, strongarm-ing the qurio explosion in the anomaly hunts arent a bad idea, it only works if you have at least 1 lvl of guard up, but basically itll give u bloodblight, which would allow you to heal back what what ud have to tank for the explosion

Josh is saying here that the SAS is very quick and you can use it as a reaction but to me it doesnt feel like this at all. It feels really slow to where I have to start setting it up well before the monster does its attack. I'm having to try to predict and if I'm wrong or I miss, I'm just left standing there with no wirebugs and probably about to get hit. Am I doing something wrong?

For me it's sad man, there are many changes in the weapons that i really like (surge slash is awesome and i will use it for the most of the game) but danm i don't ever have the feeling that the monster is a threat because i can always counter every fcking move they do, sunbreak is basically a hack and slash with extra steps, i really like rise i really do but i hope the next game of the series is a more like mh world

While charging you can do a different input to trigger strongarm(left trigger + forward I think). When not charging its the normal input that you are thinking of.

There are a lot of features to Surge Slash Combo you haven't mentioned. Was planning on making a guide specifically on Surge Slash Combo today and stopped by to see if you already covered it. Already figured your focus would be on the chunky hits :P

TBH I've always enjoyed the idea of swinging around the Great Sword since I first started playing MH all those years ago but the speed was always a turn off for me when compared to stuff like LBG, Dual Blades, and Sword and Shield. Surge Slash Combo is on my main Switch Scroll while the blue one has the setup mentioned here...I'm still having trouble with the timing of using Strongarm and getting it to activate while charging but I'll figure it out. Using the Rathalos X armor which gives a max Partbreaker on top of Attack Boost at where I'm at currently plus the maxed out defense upgrade has been a tail severing jamboree for me lol, when combined with LBG that use Slice ammo I can get break parts like crazy without taking up slots on my armor, and having Spare Shot helps out a lot too when it comes to saving ammo. I've started using the Great Sword more now that I have a faster combo option with Surge Slash that can still get into True Charged..yeah it takes longer to get to it but with competent online partners or a good Buddy setup it's still possible.
