Hello there! We are from Pennsylvania so it's hard for me to predict. But December in Colorado should be cold! Make sure you have a good all wheel drive. We went mid May so we wore short sleeves for the most part and carried fleece layers with us.

December will have snow and ice so yes would recommend SUV. Rocky mountains national Park is only and hour or so from Denver but majority of the park might be closed for winters please check their website
