I’ve been playing for over 15 years and I’ve never had trouble playing a song near perfectly when given enough time and practice, but it feels like I’ll never be able to play this song without error. Some days I’m almost perfect, some days I mess up constantly.

It’s a very different approach to pickin - Tony was unique that way // you would need to bust open the style completely- learnin an intro is but a scrape of ice off the iceberg when it comes to this stuff - it’s not enough

@@chrisbrennanguitar the dry tone of your guitar and your attack works really well for this song, I have a bunch of guitars Martin's etc and when playing this song on them it sounds really messy with to much sustain. May is ask, what is the brand of your guitar?

This is great Chris ,I had been taking a similar approach to CSB patching in licks from the homespun version, live version and even some Chris Eldridge licks. I really got good at playing this tune to tempo while maintaining clarity and note quality after studying your videos. So thanks again! If I may request, could you do a lesson sometime speaking to Tony's rhythm playing through the verse and chorus because no one is spending any time on the right way to do it!! Thanks Chris!!

I know Norman Blake wrote this tune. I’m old enough I even own the vinyl. However, I don’t believe he envisioned, at all, what Tony brilliantly did with it. Also, I have not analyzed it note for note, but I think Chris even enhanced it some more in spots. Gorgeous.

Excellent job, Chris! Your version is one of the closest if not the closest to Tony's Instructional version of Church Street Blues I've heard. Could you possibly do an analysis and cover of Tony's rendition of Wayfaring Stranger in C Minor like you gave a sample of at the end of this video?

Wow! Thank you for this, Chris! It's a testimony, not only to Mr. Rice's prowess, but your gift of teaching it!! Quick question, do you have any vids currently, or coming up on the basics of cross picking? I've seen a number of examples and lessons, but I've been hybrid and economy picking for so long that I get lost in the consistent down / up motion of the pick. Thought I'd ask you if you had any vids or pointers. You seem to have a very easy way with this fine guitar. Cheers!!

If my American ears can tell, I sense an accent perhaps Northern Ireland? I'm finding pickers from Italy, France, England... taking Americana tunes and really mastering them. I have a few Irish tunes I try to play flatpick style... Sally Gardens and Si Beag Si Mor I got off a David Bromberg record. I guess about 50% or more of the fiddle tunes we play in Bluegrass originated in Ireland.
@chrisbrennanguitar4 ай бұрын
Ya guessed right bud - for an American to pick out us northern tribe of Eire is extra notable too !!!! Yeah the Irish n scots brought some of those old tunes over in a wheelbarrow back in tha day - ps I hate my accent - but I do it anyway - cheerz chief for the time!!!!

@@chrisbrennanguitar Truth be told, I have a family connection to your island, and have been there a few times. My granny from the Galway Gaeltacht even taught me some Irish, but dia duit and gura maith agat is about all I can remember. Ulster accents are ok... brown bread = "brine brey-yed." I really like your Tony Rice version of CSB, and I also like the Norman Blake version just as well.
@musik102 Жыл бұрын
It's funny using the word "hybrid" because in guitar lingo it has come to mean a mixture of flat picking and finger picking ( think Albert Lee) . Interestingly, Tony has used a blend of fingers and plectrum in some of his tunes.
@chrisbrennanguitar Жыл бұрын
true!!!!!!!
@DanAshby Жыл бұрын
Hi Chris, I really appreciate your version as it does tidy up some of those tricky bits and make more sense timing-wise with the 3/4 bars rather than the way lots of people write it out all in 4/4. I'd be very interested to understand how you make those kind of rhythmic interpretations - however, my main question is that in bar 18 you take the time to show pick stroke direction, but your choice of strokes results in a double down stroke on the A string. This felt a bit clunky (and hard for me to do) and watching Tony play the intimate version I suspect he actually sweeps up on the D to A string and then down for beat 1 of the next bar. What do you think? You can see what I mean here? kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3upmHZpisdkZqcsi=HWl_y5WwDAd-GKSL&t=78 - it feels more natural to me to just start the run on a down stroke and alternate which gets you to a down stroke in the right place but as we're looking at Tony I just thought it would interesting to get your take. So much thanks for all your work! It's incredible.
