Sooo excited about this…as a fairly spontaneous creative, I love the idea of speeding up drying time. I am in the UK and wondering if there is another name for dry wall jointing compound as I don’t want to buy huge tub. NB I JUST FOUND YOUR EXCELLENT OTHER COUNTRIES LIST ON YOUR GREAT WEBSITE…. But mainly I want to know if the foil method will work with pm paper strips as opposed to pm clay. And thank you for your enthusiasm and great teaching.
@UltimatePaperMache2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can use foil under paper strips and paste, but I cover it with masking tape first. The paper mache clay fits into the little holes in crumpled foil and holds on that way. Paper strips and paste tend to just slide off unless the foil is covered.
@tonifine53552 жыл бұрын
@@UltimatePaperMache helpful. Thank you. So I guess what I’m really asking is whether the ability to “bake” a piece (with or without foil over glue) works effectively with pm strips as opposed to pm clay. And mainly, will it make it dry enough to work on quickly?
@UltimatePaperMache2 жыл бұрын
@@tonifine5355 You can dry paper strips and paste in the oven, but you need to watch the corners and edges of the paper to make sure they don't curl up - that can happen if they aren't drying evenly. You can also just put the paper strips and paste in front of a fan, which seems to work just as fast - and you don't have to worry about them getting too hot and turning brown.

@UltimatePaperMacheАй бұрын
You would only need the special tape I used in this video if you also use hot glue and want to speed things up in the oven. If you're making a sculpture that is air drying, the normal masking tape works just fine.

Without oven since my size might be large any other ideas for speeding up and does one Still use the foil tape?
@UltimatePaperMache Жыл бұрын
If you aren't putting your sculpture in the oven, there's no need for the foil tape. It was just to keep the melting glue from ending up on the oven floor. The best way to dry a larger paper mache sculpture is to put it in front of a fan.

@@patriciaanne1631 Be sure to do a small test piece first. When I lived in sunny Eastern Oregon, I made a turtle and put it under a rhubarb leaf. It was fine in the shade, even when it rained. The leaf got too big so I moved it into the sun. The sun cracked the varnish, and the next time it rained the paper mache clay got wet and soft. Have you seen my two videos about my garden gnome? Hi! Thank you for your great videos and helpful information. Questions: Can you mosaic over paper mache clay? Tin foil armature, paper mache clay, then start to adhere tiles? Also do do you always need to bake the paper mache clay, or was that for speed of the video? Any clarification you can offer would be helpful! Thanks again.
@UltimatePaperMache3 жыл бұрын
Hi Sunny. I just threw my little cat in the oven to prove that you can do that, even when using hot glue in the armature, if you cover it with the foil tape. I don't usually bake my sculptures unless I'm in a hurry. The paper mache clay will dry very hard without baking. I don't know about mosaics, though. You'd need to try a small test batch to see if they stick. Unlike a cement-based grout, the paper mache clay will shrink slightly. I don't know if that will matter or not, so you'll have to try it and see. Have fun with it!

Donna, you might be thinking about a different kind of tape. This isn't duct tape. The 3M Metal Repair foil tape I'm using is rated from -30F to 250F. You can see the company's description of the tape on their amazon listing here: amzn.to/387kukI They do have some that withstand even hotter temperatures, but they aren't needed for something like an armature for paper mache.
