The secret about air dry clay (for avoiding cracking) is slowly adding new levels of clay after the ones before dry. I sculpt 10cm-15cm figures in DAS clay, and so far it's been an awesome journey. Using water helps to smooth it a lot, but once u take it out of foil package, the time starts and it's a race for the right shape. It's also not that expensive (comparing to polymer clay) so if something's not as I want, I just use Dremel to cut that part out and make a new one. What I love about this is - when first level dries a bit and become brighter (2-3 hrs), I just put a bit of water on it, so new layer can stick to it and can easily continue to work on it. It really is a perfect and budget solution for those out there who don't want to spend a lot just trying their new sculpting hobby. It comes in different colours, so everybody can pick what they like.

To save on foil I do the following: for example the head, I would make a ball with a plastic bag/s depending on the size you need and then wrap foil around it. The plastic bags give you bulk (don't roll them too tightly together) and saves on foil. I roll the one end of a plastic bag into the beginning part of the next plastic bag so that they are 'connected'. I pull out the plastic bags 1st. If you roll the ends together like I described above; once you pull out the 1st bag, the edge of the next bag will be free for you to tugg & pull on and that makes pulling the bags out from inside the sculpture easier. Once all the bags are out I pull out the foil. You can reuse the bags again because they are protected by the foil & thus won't get dirty.

I've always left the armature in when working with air dry, it does crack, but it always seems to crack on places that doesn't have armature in too though, and it's kept out of a draft, not handled etc while drying. I just usually make some slip out of the air dry it's self and fix the cracks. I'll have to try it your way when i've got the chance. :) I also coat it in elmers/pva glue and a tiny bit of water when it's dried to stop it from absorbing all the paint. Can't wait to see your way of doing it! :)
@TheBroodingTom9 жыл бұрын
ChickenFromTheMoon Ya you can definitely fix cracking with the same clay you are using for sure. I'll be sure to explain the 2 different options (either removing the armature or leaving it and fixing the cracking) The shellac I use would probably be good for sealing it too, easier at least lol I've mentioned the stuff in other videos I think.. Glad you are looking forward to this!!!

Question: shall this kind of armature work for the *regular* clay (the one that has to be baked at 900 Celsius)? I know you cannot leave metal inside because it somehow "explodes" at such temperature, but at the same time have to make it hollow. :O So I do not know what to do. 🙆🏻♀️

awesome video! I used the foil and tape armature method in your dragon video and made a chinese dragon with air dry clay. There were zero cracks and almost zero shrinking too
@TheBroodingTom9 жыл бұрын
Fisbus if it's a water based clay there is still gonna be shrinkage.. because some of the mass (the clay) is composed of water, once completely dried the amount of mass is less which is what shrinkage is. You most likely just did a great job with the armature by not making it too dense from over compacting the foil. I tried to google the actual shrinkage rate but didn't find much... one site claims 5-15% shrinkage depending on climate, thickness etc BTW grats on the chinese dragon! I wanna make one too =D but I'll stick with polymer clay lol

So sad that my internet wasn't liking your 4K video. I had to let it buffer for agessssssssss but there was no way I was watching it in anything less after all the hard work you went through to get it.
@TheBroodingTom9 жыл бұрын
Kerryanne Boer LOL! You don't have to watch this in 4K if your machine can't handle it, or if you don't have a 4k display... You will find that by setting the resolution to 1080p using the gear wheel in the lower right corner of the video it will still look great! Regardless to which setting you use you'll still find the video to be wonderfull due to the huge 1" sensor. (that combined with great lighting and my editing skills hehe) 4k is mainly for people who have upgraded enough to view it (for example: watching youtube on a 4k smart t.v) so if you can't quite watch it just hold off for a bit on that setting and just know that it is there in the future should you ever upgrade (it's getting much cheaper!) Having said that 4k IS amazing to watch even on a 1080p display, albeit it lacks the 1.1 billions colors and sharpness though.. Just saying, you don't have to do it for me I don't mind :D But the thought is MUCH appreciated! Thumbs up'd!

@suzt228 жыл бұрын
why do you remove the armature?
@TheBroodingTom8 жыл бұрын
because the type clay I'm using in this video series is air-dry clay, it's a water based clay and water makes up for a lot of the bulk mass of the clay. once it dries out it becomes less than it once was, creating shrinkage. If the core is left in it that would result in very large cracks at least half inch thick all over the place. This is why I prefer polymer clay over the natural water based clays. Polymer clay still has shrinkage, but it's less than 1%!! I'm nearly done with a new video trying out a new clay for me that has 0 shrinkage, apoxie sculpt, made some tusks with it. Great stuff! Twice the cost though =( Thanks for checking this out!!

Can you use this form for polymer clay too?
@TheBroodingTom7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I did this for my Snail Monster project. You can even build out areas like the face and jawline to help reduce the amount of clay your using, and to help simplify the baking process. But for any small parts that may extrude from the sculpture (like horns for example) should have some sort of wire in it, depending on the size of the parts. Also, the overall shell of the structure should be thick enough to give the finished sculpture enough strength, ¼ to 3/8th's thickness depending on how large the structure is. Hope this helps. And thank you so much for taking the time to watch this! Happy sculpting!
