Funny you talked about the upper rail, Vortex just introduced a scope mounted range finder.

I use a feeler gauge to set the gap between the top and bottom halves of the rings. I screw down one side until there's no gap. Then I screw down the opposite side to a point that will still allow me to rotate the scope. I then measure the gap with the feeler gauge and divide that by two. The result is the approximate gap for each side. Much faster and accurate than trial and adjust method.

Very good.....especially the elevation turret cap for leveling. When tightening the ring screws, I noticed you did the front, then the rear ring. I always thought you should do them both at the same time? Thanks for another great video.

The 1 piece scope mount is the ultimate and only way to go for absolute precision, I use the Spuhr ISMS, this Hawkins looks nice also.

Gavin i respect your video creation skills but your product knowledge is a little suspect in this one... did you check the level reads true to the reticle or even reference the reticle to anything being level? Especially in an unproven scope thats paramount. Also try flipping the level to the other side so you can see it when you're swuarred up to the rifle.

This is a nice set up. The price won't fit my budget. Most of the rifles I own don't cost that much. My Mossberg Patriot in 6.5 CM was just a bit more at $400. The Remington 725 in 280 Rem was $475 with the Leopold 3x9 scope and fancy padded sling. The rest were much less. Under $250. So spending more than the rifle cost for the mount and rings don't make much sence. Spending that much on a decent scope, then another $50 to $100 on base and rings fits the budget much better. Being on a very limited income high dollar equipment isn't in the budget. For my hunting and casual target shooting my low budget satifies me. I do like learning about what you have teach. Learned much on loading and longer range shooting.

I think most scopes have a flat surface on the bottom these days. I use my feeler gauges to get that surface and my mount parallel.

That's not very accurate. There is waaay too much variance, you'll be off by a few degrees. You want to use a plumb.

I started to get those same rings until I found out they're made from 6061 aluminum so I went with the ARC M-Brace mount made from much stronger 7075 aluminum instead. ...just because

For what it's worth I shoot a ton of PRS matches and just had a ARC MBrace mount split at the rings. The design leads to very little metal at the hinge location and it just split.. be ware.

​​@@Sagittariustoo so I reached out again just to see where you may have got that 6061 from. Hawkins offers some lighter weight "hunting" rings that they call "hybrids"... Those are made from 6061. Their heavy duty Mount such as this one piece is made from 7075. I haven't had my Hawkins mount long, but my good buddy Kahl Harmon Who is part of the army Marksmanship unit has been running them for years. He takes his scope/ mount off of his rifle so that he could use his scope as part of his carry-on luggage to ensure the scope doesn't get thrown around. The Hawkins stays within 1/10 mil whatever you take it off and put it back on. It's about a solid of a mount as you could buy. Most other scope mounts can't do that. It's the way Hawkins machines the pic rail on the bottom and the radius on the shoulders as well as it being built like a brick shit house that allows that... While I never want to bury a company. American rifle company knows that there's an issue with the arc mount, hunters have been breaking the rings for years because whenever you take them in really cold environments the cross pin is known for snapping. Also mine broke on the actual hinge... Unfortunately this isn't limited to one scope mount. After mine broke and I did research, there's somewhat known to break from time to time. My comment was just to warn you, you may have great luck, but at least now your aware. God bless man!

I like to shoot a laser level onto a flat wall. level my rifle in a Tipton style vise, then level the reticle to the laser level line, typically shinning a soft flash light backwards through the scope... if that makes any sense. There is a bunch of ways to 'skin a cat' so to speak

Gavin, I do not consider a scope properly installed unless the rings are lapped. Even though it may be one piece, there could be variations due to stresses during machining or mounting. Once scope rings (or mounts) are lapped in place on the rifle, they should never be removed. If they are, I would lap them again. I am not a fan of cap-mounted levels. It is a lot easier to adjust the scope-tube clamp-on types, not having to worry about cap screw torques changing the level position. I am also not a fan of picatinny-mounted levels. There is no provision for adjustment. It would be really interesting to see how the Hawkins mount, scope clamping surfaces would clean up if you lapped them. Where possible, I prefer to use a precision ground shaft made into a lapping bar. The commercial laps often use bars with clearances for large abrasive particles. The coarse grit leaves a finish that is a bit on the rough side. I use 320, 600, and finish up with 1200 grit. During the lapping process, layout bluing is utilized to show areas that are not cleaning up.
