This gun is amazing. There has been complaints about the stock, I havent have any problems with it but to each is own. After shooting this gun here are my thoughts. Trigger: Crisp trigger, easy and clean Recoil: There is none, kicks less than a 30-30 Accuracy: After sighting it in with a vortex scope, at a 100 yards all three of my shots landed in the exact same space Final thoughts: This gun is one of the best rifles I have ever owned, accurate and dependable, don't hesitate to purchase.

Bikes N' Guns It’s hard to complain about a rifle at that price point that will shoot that well. Manufacturers have to cut costs to build a “budget “ rifle. Obviously Ruger chose to build a good barrel and make sacrifices in the stock which was smart because a large percentage of shooters won’t care as long as the gun is a drill. Ruger supposedly has the newest and best hammer forging equipment in the factory to build the barrels. For those that cannot live with the factory stock there’s a lot of aftermarket choices for them.

***Long post*** but worth it if you’re chasing tiny groups with the Ruger American rifles. First step. Remove barreled action and sand down the barrel channel, slightly on Left/Right sides but focusing on bottom. Sand until you cannot make the barrel contact the bottom of the barrel channel by squeezing them together with one hand. Step 2. Get a cheek riser. I really prefer Matthews Fabrication. He has some cool designs and for an upcharge could probably match the Go Wild Camo. Step 3. Trigger work. Either cut 2 coils off factory trigger spring...Buy the MCarbo trigger spring...use a ballpoint pen spring cut to appropriate length...or, I personally just removed the trigger spring entirely, I CANNOT get my rifle to fail with the trigger spring removed, and my trigger is repeatedly breaking at 2 pounds...Or buy a Timney trigger Step 4. The scope base. Ruger usually does a crap job at torquing down the scope base screws and over time they will come loose. So I remove the screws, clean them all up, and use a threadlocker on them. Torque them down to 20 inch/pounds Action screws I torque to 60 inch-pounds. With my handload of H4350, Hornady brass, Federal 210M primer, and 140gr ELD-M, I’m shooting 0.3-0.4” 5 shot groups at 100 yards. At 700 yards the group holds in the 2-3” range depending on environmental factors and myself. I’ve found the ELD-M likes to be 0.015” off the lands in my Ruger Predator. Pushing 2745fps at the muzzle with a SD of 5fps. These barrels like to have copper fouling, so do not clean them obsessively. I shoot 400-500 rounds before I lose accuracy, and then I clean my barrel. Aftermarket goodies- check out Anarchy Outdoors! They have lots of fun stuff. I personally bought an Indian Creek Design chassis over MDT or any other options. It’s a modular chassis that is the same price as the mdt LSS.

Wow- thanks for sharing Lucas! We've been discussing some of those points, and will look into some of your other insights... I think the stock is the main thing holding this rifle back... :)

gavintoobe yeah, the stock definitely does not do the rifle justice. But the cheap stock is probably the main reason these rifles are so affordable. Grayboe is releasing American inlets sometime “early 2019”, I’m hoping by May. I’ve got my RAP 6.5 creedmoor in the Indian Creek Design Chassis, and I think I may want to put my RAP .223 in the Grayboe Ridgeback or a Renegade with adjustable comb. That way I can swap the 2 barreled actions between the two different setups. Right now my RAP .223 is in the factory stock, uses AR15 magazines. I used Magic Sculpt and made a vertical grip that matches the feeling of the MPA EVG grip on my ICD chassis. Vertical grips are life-changing on shooter input into the rifle in my opinion

@@lucass4758 Hey Lucas, Brock from the Facebook group here. I was reading comments and was getting ready to type everything you just said and looked down and was like hey, there's Lucas. Haha everyone, do what he said and you'll be amazed at the accuracy of this rifle. With factory Hornady Black 140g or American Gunner, I was getting 1/2 MOA groupings, consistently. Switched to the Magpul hunter stock and now I'm getting 1/4 MOA, CONSISTENTLY. That's insane for a gun priced this low. I also shoot 1k yards a lot and this rifle does that with ease. For the record I'm using an SWFA 10x SS scope and Seekins rings

I have the 308 in Go Wild. Very impressed with it. First time out to site in a scope I had 6 or 7 rounds touching at 100 yards. No fliers. Hunted a Nilgai in Texas and it dropped within 10 feet of where it was hit. Great gun, made me look good.

SO, I have a couple of the ruger american because I believe in the barrel. What I found is sometimes the light but cheap plastic stock will flex causing some minor touching from the factory as i was having those not obvious flyers. so i took the stock off and increased the clearance between the stock and barrel and that really helped and the flyers started disappearing which sometimes occurs as the barrel is shot through and gets smoothed out as well. Anyway if the end starts flexing you can add glass or another types of products to fill the fore grip area to keep from twisting and flexing. Mine is now constantly shooting better than I can shoot. One other thing I recall is the land jump is minimal from factory ammo, i think i can add 20 thousanths and the bullet is touching the lands so i think i pull my bullet out like 10 thousandths and this got me in 3/8 MOA if i shoot prone and can maintain focus with no wind with under get SDs under 20.

Took this gun in 30-06 to Africa: 14 one-shot kills ranging from 110 to 380 yards. Fantastic firearm. 4 springboks (including the 380 yard shot), 2 oryx both over 200 yards, 2 wildebeests, kudu bull head shot, 4 warthogs (320, 280, 260 and 110 yards), waterbuck bull. All but 2 dropped immediately- 1 oryx went 25 yards, one wildebeest went 40 yards. Gun performed flawlessly. This is an outstanding weapon.

Bought the basic ruger American predator 6.5mm creedmoor last year, came with vortex crossfire ii scope. I absolutely love this rifle. I've beat the shit out of it! Banged scope, gun and mounts in the woods, deer stand, on and off the 4 wheeler. 143 gr eld-x has me at 9 for 9. Killed deer and yotes, 1 shot stops from 20 - 250 yards. Practically no recoil on my surgically repaired shoulder. Only problem i had was scope mount and rings weren't properly torqued from factory. It's been great since then

I had flyers with my .450 BM in the go wild American. My observation at the time was that the flyers happened only when using bags/ putting weight on the fore end. I fixed it by adding fiberglass fill to the fore end. Went from 2-4 inch groups (with the flyers) to around 1.5 inches (it is a .450 BM afterall) with no flyers.

I just got a trigger spring from M-carbo for 12 bucks for my pre 2008 Winchester model 70 in 30-06 ! It’s a game changer for sure ! I tried to adjust the trigger with the factory spring and my rifle failed my drop test ten times in a row !!! The new trigger spring fixed that !! Even tho I would not get shot by that first adjustment, unless I dropped my rifle from a tree stand, my grand kids might because they won’t know about it once I’m gone !! A 12 buck fix is more than worth it ! Plus 125 grain managed recoil rounds make a 30-06 a lot of fun to shoot at the range !!

Guys, one thing I have found with the Ruger precision in which I have 2 is when you take it out of the box and put on a bipod there is a little flex at the end of the stock. sometimes and for mine both cases I had to remove the barrel and trim some of the interiors off the fore end to make sure it is truly free floating. Also certainly the more the barrel breaks in the better it gets. I will be getting a go wild soon. I think one thing that makes this a decent gun out of the box is the seating distance off lands from the factory for standard bullets.

After all the hype, I purchased the same rifle. This is my first rifle under $600. The build quality reminds me of my 1st Tippmann 98 paintball gun when was in my teen. My opinion...The machine quality is 7 of 10 due to many sharp edge and visible milling marks. The stock finish quality 6 of 10 with noticeable warpage. The Cerakote finish 8 of 10 some are with lighter coating. The smoothness of the bolt 7 of 10 due to that it takes effort to load and unload. The accuracy 9 of 10 under 1" group at 100 yards with 3 shots. Weight of the rifle 8 of 10 with scope and bipod 9.8 lb. Overall rating 7 of 10. I will have to spend maybe a few hours polish and fix the warped stock. Definitely recommend it to beginner 1st time hunting rifle owner due to its cool looks. Plus many mods available in the market.

Love the review, Love the rifle as well. I have a savage axis xp in 6.5CM which out of the box was kind of unimpressive. I did a home depot trigger job complete with set screw for over travel, new spring and some washers as shims to eliminate side travel. Next I filled the for end with epoxy which helped next filled the butt stock with hamster fluff and construction adhesive. Then JB weld action bedding. Threw away the weaver scope for a Athlon argos BTR. It went from 1.25" groups to 0.4" 5 shot groups at 100 yards with cheap Remington 125 grain deer loads. I just WISH I had seen the Ruger 1st. This said I am all in at under $600

I recently picked up a Ruger American in 358 Winchester, apparently they made a special run of 400 rifles. The price was $399.00, and on my way out the door I seen an older model 1.5x4.5 Bushnell for $29.00. I purchased the scope grabbed some weaver rings ( medium ) at Wal-Mart, and put it together. I hit the range and got a no kidding half inch groups at 100 yards. I am pleasantly surprised and thankful for my less than $500.00 black bear/Deer rifle.

Agree 100%, The stock on the gen 1 American is a real bummer ! I modified mine by widening the barrel channel, loaded the stock with 4 lbs of BB's, complete rifle is now 11 to 12 lbs. I also added about 1 lb to the fore end with the BB's locked in place with soft silicon ! I wanted to be able to remove the BB's if I didn't like the way the rifle handled ! In a perfect world, I would now replace the silicon with harder material to make the fore end much less flimsy ! However after cleaning out the barrel channel, the barrel is free floated, so I never went back to do that ? My Ruger gen 1 in 308 is a real shooter especially as a designated hunting rifle and in Oklahoma the average shot at a deer is only about 100 yards ! It will shoot much further than that as it is consistently a 1 MOA RIFLE !

It has a bushnell engage 3-12 scope on it and I used the mcarbo trigger upgrade for it and it shoots great! I’ve only shot federal 140gr non- typical and it’s clover leafing groups with it. I have a lot of Savage rifles I like really well. This rifle is a great value when you look at all the features. I am considering one in a 308 just to have a threaded barrel and brake. I have considered having my barrels threaded on rifles I already own without brakes, but it isn't a practical investment as much as it costs. The thing to do anymore is purchase rifles already threaded. It is just more cost efficient. Knocking the factory bedded stock is foolish the stock on it is fine. Any other replacement would have to have a bedding system or be bedded to even be as good as the original.

@@fattigla I'm not 100% sure but I don't believe the go wild line is a "heavier tapered" barrel like the predator line is. On Ruger's website they do not make mention of that on any of their go wild caliber riffles. I looked into it because I really want the predator rifle in .308, however, I prefer a 20" or 22" barrel, not an 18" barrel. The go wild .308 has a 22" barrel, but again it does not make mention of the barrel being a heavier tapered. This could be why their groups were not as consistent as others with a predator line rifle.

The more I look into it, the Ruger A rifles, are a lot more gun, than many gun snobs want to admit. Honestly, its got a lot of features done right and price has been kept low. Not beautiful like a nice wood/blued model 70 or M77 r something, but not a bad looking rifle either. Not sure side by side, but accuracy wise, could be comparable to a Tikka in some ways. Both have low bolt lift, plastic mags and a plastic stock. Tikka are offered in wood stocks too. Ruger A isnt yet but may in future. Which will hold up longer in the test of time? Who knows, might be similar.

Pumped about the Ruger American predator a/I style !

Have the exact same rifle. Really good in all aspects bar one. Shoots well, light, good looks... but the stock is a little flimsy. Affects a flyer every few shots. So it may not be your ammo but your stock. Check that first before you start reloading for it.

Yes I agree with the fact the stocks are flimsy and you are getting interference from the barrel touching the stock. But really for a hunting rifle you’re well inside the kill zone I’d check it at 200 and 300 if it’s hitting a paper plate your good. Now if you were stringing shots 4-5 inches out well then you have something else going on but again this is a budget hunting rifle if you want a tact driver then spend a few more dollars. I have a encore in 7mm and it is sub MOA have it sighted in at 200 and have no problem with .75 5 shot groups. Yes I like single shot over bolt guns just me. Nice looking rifle though I do like the color good luck.

We'll have to look at that (stock flex when bipod is loaded). I'm wondering why they (most rifle MFG) aren't more generous with free-float gaps... could avoid these types of issues...

fisher1972 unfortunately I don’t reload have thought about giving it a try but time is a constraint for me. And I will always shot the encore one of the best rifles made in its day. I didn’t like when Smith and Wesson bought them out don’t get me wrong SW is a fine company but they certainly haven’t put the effort into keeping this fine gun manufacturer up to the old standards. But I’ll continue to use this rifle and pick up barrels when I can and the 7-08 is a great caliber as the other choices you have. However I do like the new rifle that recently came out and though not a single shot it is high on my get I list I’m very interested in long range shooting and yes that does play into me getting into reloading so I guess I better get to studying!! Take care and safe shooting have a great Christmas and a great New Year.
@umami0247
@umami0247 5 жыл бұрын
gavintoobe unfortunately it’s about profit when you are talking about adding a bit more molecules to a stock when your talking several tens of thousands rifles well it cuts in to profits and it would cut into the after market stock market think about it if your stock was just what you needed you would not look at other options. And Ruger certainly isn’t the only manufacturer that has this issue every stock on budget rifles are the same. You really don’t see an improvement till the 850.00 dollar range and up. For me I like the McMillan line however you can spend more on the stock than the rifle and most won’t go that route kinda kills the budget side of this decision.

I have a couple Ruger American Predators in 6.5 Creedmoor,one fed great the other didn't so I loaded both mags.set them side by side & could see with the mag.that would not feed the cartridges sat more on a level plane & about 3/32" lower than the mag. that fed every time. I also wanted to have a couple of spare mags.so I ordered two more thinking they might be better,I was wrong! It seems the later mags. have the feed lips closer together than the earlier model I have which made the cartridges sit lower in the mag. I ended up taking a fine file & shaving the later mags.feed lips until the cartridge sat that extra 3/32" higher in the mag.plus I shaved slightly more off the feed lips toward the front where the cartridge shoulder rides so the cartridge sits a little nose up! Now every magazine I have (four) feed perfectly every time! I love the flush fit rotary mags. but only if they work! For the guys that have feeding issues with their rotary mags.this works! One little tip,push the follower down & out of the way while you file the feed lips so you don't damage it.

Ok. So this will be a kind of lengthy post. I have a t.c venture 2 in 6.5cm, I have a ruger a predator 2 in 6.5cm, savage axis2 in 308, 25-06,223,17hmr. . All the savages are in Boyd's stocks . The 308, 25-06, 223 are in thumb hole precision stocks both the 308 & 25-06 are pillar bedded. Riding on the 308 savage is a bushnell ledgen 6-18-50mm , the 25-06 has a Nikon prostaff 4-12-44mm .The 223 has an old school ( not the now walmart ) tasco silver antler 3-9-50 mm. The 17hmr has a Bosh and lamb ? 3-9-50 So far I haven't found a rd that these guns dont like. All factory loads . Across the board on all 3 rifles except 17 ( it only gets cci) . I have put hornady, federal, Winchester, Remington, game king , seller and babbit? And some random factory reloads . I've ran 93gr ? Up to 148gr through my 25 . 110gr - 180gr through the 308 And 55gr-64gr through the 223 . In every load except one all rifles held an easy .5' m.o.a at 50 yards for the 17 ,100 and 200 yards for the 308, 25-06, 223. None of the rifles shot the Remington very well . Every rifle shot .5 groups or better with hornady. The 308,25-06,223 all experienced failure to fire with solid primer strikes shooting hornady American whitetail The t.c in 6.5cm is in the factory stock but has been 100% stiffened. It has a bsa world class. 4-10-50mm After only 10rds through the rifle it stacks 5 rds at 200yards latterly 5rds is one group that I can put my finger tip over . The Ruger a predator is nestled into a Boyd's spike camp that has been pillar bedded . It has a vortex 6-18-44 on it . Stacks 5rds @ 200 yards. None of them will run Remington with speaking of. My point in this massive post is that the savages @330$ new shoot just aswell as the 540$ t.c and 560$ ruger .

Interesting- are you limited to a certain number of rounds in your magazine?
@payres48
@payres48 5 жыл бұрын
@@Ultimatereloader There are magazine restrictions but they may vary from state to state and from firearm to firearm. Different firearm categories cover different types of firearms. For instance a bolt action rimfire is category A and may not have any magazine restriction applicable but a semi-auto rimfire is category C and is restricted to a 10 round limit. Semi-auto rimfires with more than a 10 round magazine are category D. Your firearms licence must include all category endorsements relative to the firearms you own. You are not allowed to own or possess any firearm that your licence doesn't cover. In my case I don't own a handgun, nor may I be in possession of one as I don't hold category H. I can apply for it but there's a level of training to go through to get it and it could be up to twelve months before I could legally purchase a handgun. I can however use a handgun at an approved range under supervision and have done in the past. I also hold category B which includes bolt action centre-fire rifles.

I note your correction in the description, but a big difference outside of the aesthetics and the provided brake is barrel length. I’m looking at the Go-Wild vs the predator because you get longer barrels with the go wild. For the 308 it’s 22” vs 18” in the predator. So, there’s some potential for improved velocity performance with this version over the predator.

I got a regular Ruger American in 308. My stock did touch front left of fore stock !! I was surprized at how much kick the rifle had at 6 lbs total weight ??? I added 4 to 5 lbs of BB’s to the stock and free floated the barrel ! I now consistently get sub MOA groups using the 168 grain Federal match king bullets !!! Now that my rifle weighs in at 11 lbs it is a delight to shoot at the range as it relates to recoil with 168 grain bullets ! It might be easier to wedge the fore end off the barrel with some type of card board wedge, then hit the fore end with a hand held hair dryer ????? I have not seen anyone rebed the action, so I suspect the factory aluminum bedding works well enough ???? Anyway its now a great hunting rifle that should be good out to 500 yards, which 350 is the furthest I have ever shot in Oklahoma ??? Those 168 match king bullets seem to be magical in every load build that I have seen so give those a try if you own a Ruger in 308 !!
