I finally made my mile shot. Not bad for a $400 gun. I have been trying this mile shot for a few weeks now. Shooting without a spotter this far is tough. I have been shooting and reviewing the target camera, taking notes, and trying again. I had shot earlier this morning and was just shooting left a bit so I adjusted over and got my hit. Just took mine out to a mile this past Saturday. Hit 7 times total, with a 5 shot consecutive hits string in there. Missed first 15 shots because we couldn't pick up spot (wet and fog rolled in), so we broke and waited for it to roll out. Once it did and we picked up the first shot, I got on target in four shots. Missed next two. Then hit 5 in a row. Then missed one then hit one. Then took it to the house. Ruger American Predator 6.5 Creedmoor Magpul stock, SWFA SS 10x, Seekins rings and 20 moa base, Hornady factory 140g eldm. Had 97 total moa and only had 83 I could dial. Had to hold over 14moa. Winds 4-12mph. These guns are amazing.

Hurrah! Impact! Got a little hairy for the target cam:) I've about hit mine on occasion as well. I now put a piece of AR500 steel in front of my target cam. Saved it once of twice for sure. Looks like as your barrel heats up the impacts start going low. My 338 Lapua does the same thing after about shot 3. Good shooting! Keep it up!

Yeah, I don't see how you guys are making these shots. My American in 308 starts shooting high and off to the side after the first 4 round magazine. They need to make a scope with a red a blue reticle. First shots using the blue one and then switch to the red one when it warms up :D .

I love this sort of shooting. A guy out standing in his field. I've spent a fair amount on shooting and sadly don't do enough shooting to justify the expenditures, but I have good intentions. It's difficult to find long range shooting locations around here, unless it's ridge top to partway below an adjacent ridge. Despite the money I've spent on shooting, I also love seeing how much accuracy can be had on a budget. I recently bought a Thompson Center Compass in 6.5 Creedmoor on a special promotion for under $200 and I put a decent budget scope on it just to see what I could do (perhaps with the right hand load) for a rifle and scope that cost less than $350. My Tree Fiddy "Precision" Rifle. :-)

I am partial to the .270 and the .300 win mag. Both do very well in long distance situations. For a smaller round the 22-250 and .243 are tough to beat.

awesome hit man. just got into shooting myself this year with a mossberg 702 plinkster .22lr i got for Christmas. longest shot with that i got was about 450 yards with the broken off head of a snow shovel. Its an amazing feeling to land hits like that.

I have the RPR and have made it to 1500 yards but not any further. People have no idea the work you have to put in to reach that mile. Enjoyed your videos. Congrats. I would like to know how much you put into your build. We do classes and trying to find the most economical way of doing it for new students. I have 1k in my rifle and 900 in a vortex 6-24-50.

You should look at a MDT chassis for it. 6061-T6 aluminum frame. Just needs a pistol grip and whatever buttstock you want. Though besides being mainly a rigid chassis, it free floats your barrel but not sure how much more you'd gain from it.

Ratkill9000 ive purchased 2 of the MDT chassis, and i love them. Rem Tac 21 Remington 700 sps and the LLS chassis for Mossberg MVP 223.

Ratkill9000 no not all. traditionally most of your long distance rifle set ups are heavy. to help control the gun during aiming also helps a lot with recoil. its nothing to put 100 rounds with no shoulder pain when your done. now if your going to be out stalking bear's, elk, or deer weight would be a major problem.

I don't stalk game, I just sit in a stand or on a log and wait patiently. Long as I'm not over 10lbs with optics, full magazine and sling I'm happy.

I really wish I could get up to Illinois and do some shooting with you. There is so much I have to learn. Where I live, the longest range I have is 200 yards and I'm hitting sub MOA, the size of a quarter and I hope to tighten that up in the coming weeks. I just flew out to Utah, where I lived for 16 years before moving to Florida. Today, my son and I went to the west desert and I hit a 12" steel plate on my first shot from 350 yards. I was shooting 140 grain Hornady ELD Match with a Leapers UTG 6-24x50 scope. Then I hit my first shot from 400 yards. It was a very muddy, cold, rainy day. When I tried to shoot from 500 yards, no dust or dirt would kick up so it was hard to tell how to correct my shots. I really believe, since the elevation was about 4,200 feet asl, I was shooting too high but I just couldn't tell. I had a blast but I REALLY want to shoot my Ruger American Predator up to 1,000 yards.

They seem to stay stable. No signs of any tumbling. I don't have the paper handy, but I think they were around 900 or so feet per second at a mile.

The best so far for me is my tikka t3 .308 at 1020 meters (1115 yards) only 645 more yards to go! Granted I'll have to hold it 6 feet above the target. Lol. Nice shot no matter what rifle round you choose 1 mile isn't easy.

Awesome shooting!!! I've followed your videos since I discovered them and appreciate the thoroughness and the successful hits on target. I own a Ruger Predator 6.5 and don't mind using the supplied scope base along with some 30mm weaver rings for scope mounting. If the furthest I'll be shooting is 650 yards (limited by land boundaries), do you recommend going with an aftermarket scope base? I know it will provide more elevation adjustment which I should not need at 650 yards and under but would you recommend an aftermarket base just for scope mounting rigidity or should I save my money for more ammo?

The stock base is just fine. I would check the torque on it. I have heard some of the guns the base screws are not tight.

I just put some Burris scope mounts on my 7mm TCU contender and did not know they had MOA bushing for mounting the scope for long range. I believe they go from -.5MOA to 20MOA. so it will tilt you scope up for longer shots. I just used the standard ones because I can't shoot any further than 200yrds where I live.

I love the 243 caliber. I just have one in a Savage Model 12. I have took it out to 1200 yards with the 105g Amax. I've been meaning to take the 87g Vmax out to 1000 yards one of these days. A 1-9 twist will shoot 60g all the way up to 105g. It's definitely a very universal gun.

Were you able to achieve a 100 yard zero with your total cant angle? Basically copying your setup. Just took my first shots at the range. Elevation is topped out, but I’m having to hold 2 MRAD under at 200yds. Going to swap the rear rings to the 5 minute and see where that gets me. Might push the front ring forward to the next notch on the EGW.

Nice! I'm surprised you needed to trim back the forend to float the barrel though. Ruger says this rifle has a "Patent-pending Power Bedding® integral bedding block system (which) positively locates the receiver and free-floats the barrel for outstanding accuracy." I guess not so much then... Kinda bummed cause the price was so tempting , but I really want something ready to go right out of the box...

Did you ever get the rail issue fixed, or you just shimmed the Burris xtr rings with the MOA adjustment rings? I know you said you had an issue where you were off to the left about 20moa and your buddies rifle seemed to have the same issue with shooting to the left. I'm curious, I own this same rifle and the only thing I have done is a trigger job and it shoots .580 group at 300 yards. We don't have a longer range here to stretch it out. Just curious what you did as your final solution. I am using Burris medium xtr signature rings as well.

My rifle in this video is fine, My buddies rifle is the one off to the left, and yes I just shimmed it over with the XTR rings. I still have his rifle. I zeroed it after fixing it, but it hasn't been shot since. I have came up with about 4 other rifles with this problem. So there is a bad batch of them out there.

Well done. Have the same gun with a Timney 641C trigger and Odin Atlas 6.5 comp. Haven't tried the mile shot yet because my scope will not go to 95 moa. Shoot a lot of steel at 600 and 700 but to get out that far, I'll need better glass. It's an amazing rifle regardless of the price. when I'm done putting it in a MDT LSS Chassis and upgrading the scope, I'll have a boat load of money in it. That's ok because the rifle is good and I plan on keeping it. Thanks for the vid but I can't find the follow up with your calculations. Did I miss it?

the other day we did the same with a 25-06 and 120 sierra game kings,,and a 270 with 140 game kings,,,,and of course it took some sighters to get there,,,and a guy with a 26 nosler did get there too,,,but his barrel got hot and walked all over,,the little 6.5 creedmore,,seemed to have the least power and slightest marks on the steel,,,,,about like a 243,,,,,which shoots flatter,,,

I got 4 hits out of 15 shots at a mile with my creedmoor. Odd that our dope was so different on elevation, mine was 80 moa. My wind was 13 moas but it's windy all the time here. I had a bounce off the ground into my target that left a perfect sideways bullet mark. That gun is out of gas big time at that range:)

243 outdoors. I have the same rifle and a scope with 50 MOA total of play like yours. I have been trying to figure out what base to put on and be able to keep a 200 yard zero and be able to hit at I mile.so in your opinion ( asking because I just watched you do it) a 20 MOA rail will get me there( do you have to use a holdover at that distance with only a 20 MOA base? Any advise would be great I can't find an answer and have been looking for weeks. Any advance would be extremely helpful. Thanks in Advance and great shooting!

The stock isn't pretty to look at, so have you thought about replacing it with something more eye pleasing? The short 22" barrel and that green stock is what has stopped me months ago from buying. I will find out tomorrow if a local store was able to find Ruger's American Predator in 6.5 Creedmoor.

Dual elevation only and leave windage zero'd. Dialing wind is rarely used in long range shots as wind at the shooter location, mid range and on target are always changing. Watch your bullet trace and use the scopes mil dots for hold overs.

Btw.....great shooting with no spotter. With a 3 second flight time you should be able to get back behind the scope, trace the shot and basically spot yourself. Excellent shots.

Have you noticed you reposition your Ruger ...back and forth. What this does IMO is throwing your adjustment from the last shot off...then you start adjusting again

How did you add the lead wieght to the stock? I have an American predator in .204 and the back of the stock is the only thing I dont like about it... it feels cheaply made & hollow... can you take off the butt & fill it with lead that way, anyway?? Thanks....

I was having trouble spotting shots. A mile is past it practical range. Yes it will do it but not well. It shoots excellent out to 1200 yards, and okay at 1400. These ELD Bullets fly very well.

Have you ever tried Prime Ammo in this gun? I am torn between the Hornady 140 ft match ELD or the Prime 130 grain. I am trying to make sure I pick a round that I can use for long range target shooting and hunting for Whitetail and coyotes.

Thanks so much! I lived and worked in Utah for 16 years before moving to Florida in December of '08. Florida is great for everything besides shooting. In the west desert of Utah, I had thousands of square miles where I could shoot targets, coyotes, jackrabbits and everything else. In Florida, I have to go to a range! It's going to be tough finding a place to shoot 1,000 yard shots and even harder trying to find a place to shoot a mile. There are a couple of ranges, one east and one west, about an hour and a half to two hours drives away. The crazy thing is they cost nearly $500 a year to join. That's easily another Ruger American Rifle! LOL I really appreciate your videos! Thank you for making these and posting them!

I’m new to this, I have the same rifle with Hornady Factory 140 ELD-M . Ballistic AE shows only 72 MOA needed for a mile. What’s wrong here?

A number of things. Factory 140 is faster than my round. The elevation of the land is a major contributor. Also the Ballistic Coefficient falls off as the velocity drops especially when the round goes subsonic.

Can you tell much difference with the tacfire 308 muzzle brake? Recoil and loudness? Thanks

Up until this week, I had never fired a predator without a brake. It is a huge difference. My gun does have some added weight also. It is such a soft shooter. It is very loud to bystanders though. I can keep the gun on target after shots and see the impacts. The other gun is bone stock, and you feel it when you shoot. Night and Day difference. I may put a little video together showing side by side brake and no brake.

Sounded like it bounced off the ground then hit the gong which would make sense considering most shots were hitting the ground short of the target..

I assure you it didn't bounce. What you are hearing is the report of the gun. The bullet is subsonic at that distance and you hear the report of the shot first, then hear the impact.

Then why don't we hear the report of the gun a split second before the impact on EVERY other shot??? only the one where the target was hit?
