Can't go wrong with a Foundation stock! They shoot sooooo nice. For cartridge choice, Dasher or 6BRA. Don't get lost in the ballistics, you just want something that is lower recoil, easy to load for and shoots tiny groups at distance no matter what powder charge you choose. Good barrel life and consistent performance over the duration are additional positives, don't have to spend much time on load development or testing. Honest assessment - I bet 90%+ of the PRS/NRL matches across the country are won by a Dasher or BRA. I won the PRS NW Regional overall season this year with a 6BRA shooting 105 hybrids at 2865fps so you don't need a lazer beam or anything crazy. Hope to see you out at a match again soon!

Regarding barrel life. I ran a 6CM with a Green Mountain button rifled barrel from Keystone Accuracy. I was told it’d last 600 or so rounds, but I didn’t pull it until 900 and was shooting fine until then. All with factory ammo, Hornady and Federal, in PRS style matches. They told me that their Kriegers, which are cut rifled, last longer. I’m now running a Bartlein from Stuteville and was told to expect 1600-1800 rounds before velocity drops. Hoping it’ll get closer to 2,000 since I’m shooting factory loads only.

Gavin and Travis, you guys give us a pile of useful information on the varios cartridges, which is really helpful. For PRC and similar matches, or even a local egg shoot, I would go with the .224 Valkyrie, as it offers amazing trajectory for a modestly sized cartridge, low recoil, low muzzle blast, and relatively lower cost of consumables. These reasons combined with good barrel life will help a guy feel like he can afford to practice more. This is so important to a beginner such as myself. Keep up your good work.

Interesting that you had the Dasher edging out the 6 Creed. You must've loaded the Dasher hot and the Creed light to get more MV out of the Dasher. The Dasher is a good, efficient round, but its internal ballistics aren't quite that magical. 2950 is a pretty typical Dasher MV and 3000-3075 is common 6 Creed MV. Shooting the same bullets, the Creed will have better external ballistics. That's not to say MV and external ballistics are the only factors, but we need to start w/ an accurate baseline. What were your MVs for each round that you used in your table/chart?
@hugoletkeman70492 жыл бұрын
I was wondering the same thing. I ran both bullets in a 4dof calculator and to get the drops shown on the video the 109 Berger would have a mv of around 3120 and the 108 ELD-X at 2945. Of those choices, you just have to build two rifles! 6 Dasher for PRS and 25 Creed for NRL Hunter. I'm using a 6 GT for my PRS style matches and just built a 25x47 Lapua for NRL Hunter matches. You really can't beat the Berger 135 LRHT as far as high BC and low recoil. Love the GT because it does feed well from standard magazines and it can be loaded with a variety of powders. My first choice is Varget, but it runs well with H4350, 6.5 Staball or RL16. It's just a nice middle ground between the Dasher and Creed. Hey guy's I have a 7mm-08 which has better ballistics than the 308 but no one ever covers the 7-08 as a cross over gun for hunting and competition. I would really like to hear your thoughts at some point.
@zacharyreed85232 жыл бұрын
The issue with the 7mm-08 is that it doesn't quite have the case capacity to really push high BC 7mm bullets at a velocity that's worth the time, effort, and recoil force as compared to a 6.5 CM. A 284 cal 168gr Berger VLD (G7: 0.322) is pushed at, what, 2400 to 2600 ft/s max? A 6.5 will push a comparably high BC bullet beyond 2800 ft/s. I load 264 cal 140 gr Berger Hybrids (G7: 0.311) at 2850 ft/s easily.
@marcmoore4115 Жыл бұрын
@@zacharyreed8523 You're right that the 6.5 Creed is better, even the 6mm's are - but arguably the 7mm-08 would be better than a .308, which is what he was asking about. Looking at the Hornady ELD-M, the .284 162gr has a BC of .670/.338. The .308 168gr has a BC of .523/.263. To get near the same BC with .308 cal, you need to go all the way to the 208gr ELD-M with a BC of .690/.348. The 7mm-08 can push a 175gr at 2600fps, 160gr at 2750fps. Compared to a .308 pushing a 175gr at the same 2600fps, but with a much lower BC than the 7mm, so the 7mm-08 is indeed a better option if one was planning a cross-over style rifle. Of course a 6.5 Creed or even a PRC would be much better, but the question was about 7mm-08 and .308.

Great video guys. I shoot F-Class 600 and 1000 yard. I use no taper 30" barrels. My current favorite is the 6 Dasher. It's precision is hard to beat and the barrel life gives me a whole season with the same barrel. I shot the 25 Creedmoor last season with the 131 Blackjack. That bullet has a long bearing surface and my 7.25 twist heated the barrel up to almost flaming level on those 95 degree days. It forced me to shoot with a scope tube and cooked my barrel in 1,475 rounds. It held its velocity and bucked the wind better than the Dasher. Both of these provided the same high level of accuracy for me with much more barrel life in the Dasher and noticeably lower recoil.. At 1000 yards, many shooters are moving to the .284 Win or the .284 Shehane to fight wind better. On most days, the Dasher will make them work for it though.
@dakotaman48612 жыл бұрын
I love my 6 Creedmoor for 1000 yard precision and it is probably my most accurate at that range but I don't use it in competition because heat destroys the barrel. I use it where I can put it down for a while and let it cool so I can get 1,500 to 1,700 rounds. I made one for my prairie dog shooting partner and his shot in the .1s for about 1,800 rounds. But he continued to shoot it to 3,000 rounds as it slowly degraded to .5 MOA. I"ve seen several guys dump their 6 CRs early because they didn't know about carbon ring build up. I remove that with SemiChrome metial polish after every range trip or every 200 rounds.

With cartridge and projectile choice there are 4 questions: 1: recoil / seek trace and follow up shot acquisition time. 2: elevation / trajectory, what is your trajectory? 3: wind deflection on the projectile. 4: splash / impact on misses so you can correct errors. If you a shooting a known distance event, drop / elevation is a non topic. The only 3 things remains make your choice. You want to balance the recoil with the splash and you want something a forgiving in the wind as possible. So that is why people are choosing 6mm mid speed heavy projectiles. There is no fixed answer in PRS it is very shooter dependent, what is there weakness and what do they need the cartridge to do to help minimise that weakness.
@dinoc.55373 жыл бұрын
With the Alpha brass, you can avoid the fire forming from 6BR to Dasher. While the 6GT sounds tempting, the 6 Dasher brass had been very easy to get and performs very well. For people asking about 6 Arc, it does about the same as a 6BR with worse magazine issues and it has an uncommon rim diameter. It was designed to fit in an AR. Unless you have a mini action bolt gun it won't fit well. A lot of manufacturers try to make the next big thing for ARs because they are popular, they rarely succeed and even more rarely do they translate well to a bolt gun and almost never do they translate to competition. You can translate things like the 6.5 Creedmoor in to a large frame AR, that works well but large frame ARs are a distinct minority compared to the AR15 so they pretty much have to rely on trickle down tech from bolt guns.

@Gavintoobe I don't get what causes the difference between 6 Dasher vs 6 Creed, if you load identical bullets flying out at identical speeds in both. Where does the difference come from?
@halfdollar8610 ай бұрын
They would be the same if you have the same bullets at same speed. The 6cm has the potential to be flatter shooting than the 6 Dasher because it has more powder capacity and more velocity potential. I didn’t catch the velocity he was using but he was comparing a 109 Berger in the Dasher to a 108eld m in the 6cm. The 109 Berger has a higher BC. At my elevation the 109 Berger can be 50-55 FPS less velocity and still have less drop at 1000 than the 108 eld m. If you launch them both at 2900 FPS the Berger 109 will have 1.4 mils less drop at 1000 yards where I am.

Its far, far from ideal, but i what i have right now because i am still very young and dont have that much money on the "gun account" yet. Shooting i Denmark is also very expensive, a factory round in normal/good quality is about 1,35$, so training is expensive. I still shoot a lot. I don’t own nor have I shot a 6mm ARC, but recently watched a KZbin video that was a side by side comparison of essentially identical bolt action rifles chambered in 224 Valkyrie and 6mm ARC. Both rifles had 20” barrels and shot factory Hornady Match ammunition. The rifles were shot for comparison on the same day and time by two shooters and engaged targets at 500, 700 and 1000. The 6 ARC would do fine. It is basically a 6PPC with a fast twist rate so it launches a 105g bullet a couple hundred fps slower than the Dasher. In competition that is too slow for me by I love that cartridge in an AR15. I reamed my body length .020" longer and I like that even better. Gives me 75-100 fps more velocity over the ARC.

This was my first full season shooting PRS. I shoot gas gun and was using a M1A in .308. (It's all I had) I waited on a 6mm ARC upper for almost a year and found one, in stock at brownell's, so I ordered it. Got it the thursday before the last match of the season. Went into the match that saturday with only 66 rds on the rifle, no dry fire time, no idea how it was really going to perform, and ended up going from last place in gas gun the month before to second place. The upper is a aero precision with a 24" heavy barrel, silencer co lower, ambi bolt release, LaRue MBT trigger (recently switched to geissele hi-speed match trigger), luth-ar precision stock, warne one piece ring and vortex pst gen ii glass with harris 6-9" bipod. Ran factory hornady black 105gr and it will hold consistent 3/4 moa, with hornady 108 eld-m ammo it will hold 1/2" moa. (and, at this point, the 108 ammo had a sd of 6 and es of 14, with a muzzle velocity of 2696) For a gas gun I'm extremely happy with it and if anyone is looking to shoot gas gun division I can't recommend this caliber enough. Compared to .308 recoil is very light, it seems to buck the wind better, my setup has been 100% reliable, it's a highly capable caliber for gas gun. I also use a brassgoat brass catcher. Zero complaints about that. Nice not having to chase my brass anymore.

It’s because it’s not that good. You are going to get an extra 250-300 FPS in the 6 Creedmoor over the ARC. Now if you are using it in an AR for door kicking, overwatch and other real world tactical applications then yeah, the weight savings of an AR15 over an AR10 is worth it. For posting up and shooting off a bench, the weight isn’t a problem so then the 6 Creedmoor.
@marcmoore4115 Жыл бұрын
@@CaptainCreampie69 Well you see... you're wrong about it not being that good. It's near identical velocity to the 6BR, which is one of the most popular PRS cartridges - with good reason. All that 250-300fps gives you in PRS is less barrel life and more recoil.

@nilescoyote48293 жыл бұрын
If your going to compare ballistics, wind is going to be more important than drop as you are going to know the distance to target at matches. The exception would be NRL Hunter matches. You will not have difficulty seeing impacts with 6mm's until your 800 and longer. Evan there it's not that difficult to detect unless the mirage is terrible. Out of the cartridges you are looking at 6 Dasher would be my first choice and push 109 hybrid, 110 Atips around 2830fps, second choice would be 6 creedmoor with the bullets above and add the 115 Dtac to the list and plan to run it around 2870-2930 fps. I shoot the 6GT, primarily because of how well it feeds without much mag modifications and at the time that I switched to it (about 3 amd a half years ago) Dasher brass still had to be formed.

In competition, one has to accept the fact barrels are a consumable. In today's shortages and unpredictable economy, might want to go with 308 loaded with 155gr Palmas to get the most out of your barrel and component availability, and call it a day.
