I know the vid was a year ago but for others that may be watching, I had the same thing happen with an 08 roadking. I put a new balls clutch in the starter and it worked perfectly from then on. You will still enjoy your new compensator with less slop. Great video!

Holding the start button down a little longer helps a lot..and please keep in mind that you should re check the compensator tightness after riding about 100 miles..

Good video but it would be helpful for some of us if you didn't edit out so much of the process. I tend to learn a lot more useful information watching how someone struggles in a particular area. If I want to watch a trouble-free R&R video I can just go to the vendor sites. I know how to [dis]assemble parts. What I don't always know is where the problem areas are. As to the starter.... assuming you have clean electrical connections I'd be more suspicious of the starter solenoid. You can install a slam switch easily and inexpensively that bypasses the solenoid. All of my Harleys have had them. The starter motor itself is pretty reliable and over-designed. The problems I've had were the starter clutch slipping and the solenoid failing to stay engaged (which is what your symptoms sound like). And bad electrical connections of course. I'm impressed that you are able to afford so many nice upgrade parts. A compensator upgrade has been on my radar for years but I lack the funds to do it. Good luck!

Should have trashed that spring chain tensioner & replaced it with a South Oregon Hot Bike tensioner. The HD Spring tensioner destroyed my 6th gear final drive bearings by making the inner primary chain too tight. You could also use a Baker, Hayden, or a V-Twin tensioner. You should change it out ASAP. It was painful to watch you fumble with trying to adjust that chain tensioner. Again just junk it out.

Will check them out. That's not a part that I've heard there are problems with, or that were super ceded from the moco. Mine had very little wear on it for the ks. Cheers.

I had one of those "hot bike tensioners" It's junk..it has no spring leaft inside It now..

i did not see you put any oil in the primary your battery can be slack also be fore you buy the starter check your battery the starter will turn slow if there is no enough voltage

Hey Gordon, definitely put a new quart of oil in! The battery was a good one and never gave any indication that it was failing. I used the bike today and made a restart when it was hot, when it would typically give problems, and it started perfectly! Cheers.

My only wonder is why you would replace a defective comp with an equally inferior screaming eagle comp unless the Man of War from Darkhorse isn’t available in the UK. It’s rebuildable if it ever did go bad for $80.00 which includes a tool for the procedure. Good luck

@@timkeane7469 Hi Tim, the SE unit became a stock item on the 103 and it was from the 110 motor so it was far superior to the underated 88 style comp being asked to cope with higher torque loads. There are a number of options other than stock but in this case OEM will be fine. Cheers.

The SE comp is not a fix. Poor bandaid at most, it will fail. Not a comment about your vid - just SE comp. I went with the Baker comp and All Balls starter clutch…2009 Ultra Classic. Original comp failed at 17,000.

Cheaper to replace, plus I did sell them both to a friend whose going to use them for motor racing.
