Great video. I do have a suggestion though. Instead of the isolator switching the positive on the in-out switch, if you cut the earth on the solenoid and run that through the isolator switch it will isolate the winch for the in-cab switch, remote, and wired remote.
@4wdsupacentreAu5 жыл бұрын
G'day martin, That's not a bad idea at all! As you said, that'd give you full isolation over every method of using your winch. Good way to prevent someone plugging in their own remote and messing with your gear. Cheers, Cahn
@richardrose90904 жыл бұрын
So you would then need 5 core wire?? Take earth off solenoid, join to wire going to switch, then from switch with the 5th wire back to solenoid?? Is that correct?
@martingray7144 жыл бұрын
Yes, but you can use 4 core; - in - out - earth (from solenoid to switch then to body) - power But you can source your power from anywhere too. So you could have a separate power from the battery with a fuse, which won't be isolated when the big power cable isolator is (might be useful?). Or you can get power from accessories so the in/out switches only work with the ignition on (I chose not to do this so in the case of a roll over I could use the winch without the ignition on). There are lots of ways to do the same job and that's just my opinion really.

Very well done! However, I don't really see the point of the isolator (Rocker Toggle Switch). This is because if the solenoid in the winch control box malfunctions by getting stuck in the "on" position, neither the isolator nor the "in/out" switch will be able to stop the winch from running. If you have a fear of the winch running rogue, I would suggest installing a battery disconnector on the negative (black) cable, between the battery and winch. This way, if everything goes wrong, you still have a FAST way of cutting the power to the winch.
@KarlEller Жыл бұрын
The in-cab isolation switch is just to disable the toggle switch, so you don't accidentally bump it and run the winch in/out, they have a proper isolation switch on the winch power cable. If you wanted to get real fancy with it, you could add a solenoid isolator so that you can turn the winch on/off from inside the cab, but that's a little behind what they're wanting to do here.

great guide only thing I would do differently is with the isolater switch I'd wire it to a Relay under the bonnet and replace the physical isolater on the winch positive cable. Would be more expensive but it would mean you don't need to open up the bonnet to use the winch and would also avoid unnecessary power draw from the winch being constantly on from the battery.
@MH-ls1xi5 жыл бұрын
What size relay would you use
@Omar-iw7md5 жыл бұрын
@@MH-ls1xi Looking at the specs of the dominator winch it has a maximum draw of 430 amps @ 12volt so anything above that would suffice, I would probably go 500 amps to be safe. You could potentially reuse an old winch solenoid as a relay if you have one lying around or if you have the budget then buy a relay that size.
@4wdsupacentreAu5 жыл бұрын
Hey Patrick, the isolator is triggering the existing solenoid. just like your standard remote would do! No need for another relay when you've already got one! Cheers, Cahn
@Omar-iw7md5 жыл бұрын
@@4wdsupacentreAu the way you have wired it up the (in parallel with the outside solenoid controls) in dash isolater switch only controls the in dash controls, however regardless of the position of in dash isolater you could connect a controller to the solenoid or even short it out with a paperclip and activate the winch as it's not isolated from the power source which will leave it vulnerable to other people messing with it like in the case of people unspooling the winch and attatching it to the tow bar over the top of car and crushing it. You could potentially alleviate this by running the red wire in series with the isolater and the outside remote entry but you would still have power draw from the winch even if its isolated as its still connected to power which can rundown your battery.

How do you do this with the 6 pin momentary switch you had been trying for two days and it still doesn’t work
@4wdsupacentreAu4 жыл бұрын
Hi there, With a 6 pin switch (DPDT) you essentially have two switches in one. So down one side from top to bottom you have output A, input A, output A2 and on the other you have output B, input B and output B2. So first make sure you’re only using one side of the switch. Your power in should be going to the centre terminal and your winch in and out will need be coming out of the corresponding outputs. You can check with a multimeter: select continuity, connect one probe to the centre terminal, then move the switch and see which pin is connected. Move the switch to the other position and it should be the pin on the other side of the centre terminal that is now connected this should work assuming you’ve bought a normally open momentary switch! Double check the part number. Cheers, Cahn
