As far as I know piezos have been used as UGS ( underground sensors) and on the sonar buoys where they sink to a predetermined level for many years. UGS are to detect people, the underwater ones are to detect submarines. Having pulled a nautical one apart they appear to be just a piezo and coaxial cable with no battery or amplifier at the submerged end. The amount of wire that pays out is predetermined. Submarines like to stay below the thermocline which is where the layers of water change temperature suddenly as it reflects sonar. The sensors are sunk to just below the level of change. There are also kids projects on the net where they are waterproofed and lowered into shallow water and you can hear all the crustaceans. The UGS are marked and send back signals to a laptop showing where someone or animal is walking. My friend developed a sheet (to cover the whole cot surface) of them to pick up apnoea (cessation of breathing) in babies. This it could do easily but he had to filter out the heart rate to stop false alerts. It could communicate both ways via the mains wiring. The idea was stolen from him and it was and perhaps still is sold by Thomy. He demonstrated a piezo to me by placing one over a ring of steel as a base and put a small weight on top. It was connected to an oscilloscope and it could pick up walking through a concrete garage floor about 3 yards away, up a wooden table leg and across 2 foot of bench top. They are very sensitive. Moduleme I notice are selling them with a small preamp attached of which I have just bought a few at low price to play with. They have superb potential to let you know who is on your property even if it just plays back through amplifier and speakers. I think the signal after the preamp might go through 60 yards or perhaps further. I think either listening or letting the dogs hear it might be simpler than chasing cats, coyotes, dogs, badgers, scmbags etc etc putting one under a gravel path would probably be deafening. Thanks for the vid.

Ha ha!!! I love your excitement with the superb results you got from your project!!! This is exactly what I am looking for in order to use as a DEW (distant early warning) device in my ranch in Brazil, in order to detect two legged animals who may jump the fence in the middle of the night. So I can prep some tea and bonbons for them. ;) Thank you for sharing your expertise!

Excellent Info - Thank you. Do you know how this can be configured to read the freq and amp of the peizo output for vibration analysis of a motor (industrial) and/or shaft/bearing?

Can I use transistor and relay for lm358 output instead attiny85??? Thanks

I don’t see why not! You just need to correctly amplify the output of the sensor.

Can you please let us know more details of how to replicate this? Can you share the code? Coming from a newbie this is very exciting but also can't figure out how you did this by just looking at the video.

Actually sensitive enough to use as a camping alarm. Find a way to tune the sensitivity and send an RF alert at least half a kilometer.

@@blown34 I really do appreciate it, thanks man. Do you have time to show me/us the step-by-step procedure in building this up? I'm still a college student and I'd like to learn from you. If you would not mind.

Hi Leon. If you look in the description section of this video, I provide a Github link that has helpful notes, a complete schematic, example source code and helpful links. To build this circuit, you will need a basic understanding of electronics, prototyping electronic projects, as well as an understanding of the fundamentals of using a Microcontroller (such as an Arduino)-- all of which can be found within KZbin. Channels like EEVblog, Afrotechmods, and GreatScott! do a much better job at explaining than I ever could. However, if you have a very specific question, I'll do my best to answer your question- given my busy schedule.
