I'm still heartbroken that the newest title in the series couldn't even hold a candle to its predecessors. It was so clear what the TDU fans wanted and it still didn't happen. Replaying these games brings so much enjoyment

For real! The only thing the release of Solar Crown made me want to do is replay TDU2 instead of buying TDU SC, which I did and thoroughly enjoyed. If they fix their shit I‘d give it a go but if they don’t listen to the community it’s bound to die definitively.

Imagine Forza Horizon 5 but with TDUs immersion. Dealerships that compliments the brand, delivering cars you never had thought about before, doing deliveries, having your top 10 cars in a garage you can visit. Go inside your house and see your car on the outside, pick up hikers then take them to beauty spots. Instead of the Forzathon shop and clothes menu, have them as actual stores you can visit. TDU did so much right, and we need it back.

Than it wouldn't be F. Horizon anymore, but a copy of TDU with a different and successful badge ("FH"). I would be overwhelmed if we only could have: *--* turn on and off the engine in at least 50% of the cars *--* garages or driveways where we can place multiple cars and admire them, sit in them and pick one to drive it *--* have at least 100 cars (chosen by a poll) with customizable interior *Bonus:* buy a yacht that keeps driving around the coasts of the map and have a lower deck with 4-6 car slots.

Gta V is non-ironically the closest we have to tdu in the modern era. The huge selection of cars, some with a big amount of possible upgrades, the detailed map, garages and houses, the need to grind to buy cars and properties... it really does scratch that itch. The problem is that playing outside of a private lobby is hell.

The 1st Horizon game was so good due to both being simple and inviting a casual attitude towards racing games, while using the Forza name as solid ground to work with. There was not very many racing games that we're a mix between track style racing and street racing, I think the later Horizon games just became derivative, they forgot the core of the game which was a open world, a ladder/leaderboard to climb, and a good soundtrack.

Given how important this game is, a follow up video featuring the key mods that most players are currently using: Project Paradise - restores online free roam to cruise with friends Platinum - hundreds of additional vehicles, harder AI in races, includes PP online server BEight environment mods - adds new roads to the island, some lifted from TDU2.

Yes I would have to agree with Ryzza. Its one of the main reasons why TDU1 is still played more than TDU2 or the flop that was Solar Crown. Also if you unlock Hardcore/ HC mode the physics completely change. This was a base game feature not just in Platinum, by comparison it would rival games like Assetto Corsa with just the car handling.

The thing I like the most about TDU is that it doesn't pester you with things to do and rewards to earn. It's quiet, peaceful, it doesn't ask you for anything, you do stuff at your own pace. 2 thankfully retained most of that serenity, to the point that even the Burnout-like "do a cool flip for big points!" system is togglable- it serves no practical reason to do so, in fact you're missing out on the money that system gets, but it is an option that shows understanding of its audience. Yes, the whole Solar Crown plotline takes points off, but the moment you unlock Oahu you can just ignore it entirely and enjoy everything the game has to offer in whatever way you want to. No other game in the genre, SC included, gets it.

The Test Drive franchise started out as driving simulator, and TDU moved that concept foward. Racing was something that wasn't necessary to enjoy the game. You actually made more money doing transport and delivery missions than for races. The cars were accurately priced for the year, and the a single transport mission paid out enough money to buy a B-Class luxury sports car. Because of this you'd find yourself grinding in the game, not to advance your "Career" but simply to collect more cars and houses out of greed. You can probably complete all missions and races without ever buying a single car, but just renting them. What most retrospective videos like this miss is the online component. Driving with friends and racing random strangers compensted for many of the games flaws like the large nap of monotanous landscape. You could even buy cars from and sell cars to other gamers online. Its a major component missing when playing the game today. TDU is the progenitor of the modern open world racer and needs to be recognized as such.

It’s crazy how bad Nacon and KT screwed up the basis of a TestDrive game. It was closer to a lifestyle game than a racing game. Thats why the new game will always feel like a cash grab.

I own it and all the DLC on X360 and still occasionally play it to this day, sometimes just to go for a ride. Over 1000 hours on my save. Such a great game. Thank you for the video! Interesting to hear about the controller issues, since that works so nicely on the console. The traffic is wacky sometimes on X360, too, like stopping, drivning very slowly or trying trying to make a turn (like at a crossing) instead of changing the lane smoothly.

From a person that played TDU before official launch date (we had the game in shop 1 week before it launched in the world), and racked about 90 thousand kilometres in game... This was just a f'ing incredible way to sink into another reality. It really helped me a lot in terms of learning to drive, and having to predict the speed and traffic combination in this game is really immersive. Just an amazing experience for me, that will stay deep in my heart forever. And the vast amount of mods, including sound mods... this was by far the best sounding racing game I ever played, very realistic with additional mods. Something that Assetto Corsa, any NFS, iRacer or Forza does not come close to. And with the bugs - stopping cars came with patch 1.66a, and the invisible cars were not present while I was playing it.

pro tip: If you want a more serious driving experience/physics, try out hardcore mode. It adds weight to cars and differentiates them nicely. They arent as twitcy as in regular mode. The only catch is that you unlock it after 60% game completion iirc and gravity is close to that of the moon lol. Nice video, certianly made me want to revisit tdu... But nothing will beat the first time back i played it back in 2015.

@sukhdevr3489 oh yeah of course, there is also an element of understeer which was totally absent from the normal mode. The moon gravity when doing jumps is an ick for me though.

Definitely one of my most favourite games of all time. This is the only game where I did not have to drive 500 km/h to have fun. But there is one feature that in my eyes changes this game from great to an absolute masterpiece. Something that you unfortunately did not mention but something that was very important to huge part of player base. Hardcore mode. In this mode driving felt a lot more like a sim. Nowadays people mod Assetto Corsa to drive in open world maps with traffic and the hype for AC Evo is immense because of incoming open world sim driving. Well, guess what? TDU had it already in 2006. I'm not gonna lie. The driving physics on hardcore mode was far from perfect (especially gravity). But it was enough to make driving feel realistic, authentic, engaging and just simply FUN.

Very nice review! I remember when this game was teased I nearly bought an xbox 360 for just this game, but I held out for a PS3 instead, playing the PS2 version which was.. disappointing since my friend had the 360 version I realised how much I was missing out on. I still played that game to completion and only 5 or some years ago I bought a 360 slim and a copy of TDU to revisit that massive sense of nostalgia if so with a bit different eyes than I had in 2006. But everything from the music in the menus and the soundeffect when you "accept" anything in menus has such a warm, nice feel to it. Truly a masterpiece of its time. I recently also started playing the sequalfor the first time which I for some reason missed out on when it released, but it is a handful before you get used to it, trying to dial in the controls the way you want it is not easy either. Thanks for this!

I'm so glad that TDU was apart of my childhood. I remember when I wanted an xbox 360 just to play this game and I couldn't get one right away due to single parent problems so I rented the PS2 version on my sibling's PS2. Literally a watered down version of the 360 version with less cars, no bikes (I think) and a completely different UI. It was released after the Xbox 360 version. I managed to get an xbox 360 arcade with the 256 MB drive in 08 and then i remembered... TDU!!, Downloaded the demo in '09 and eventually got a 60 GB HDD for my birthday and purchased TDU1.. 3 years after release. 24 hour digital download LOL. Yeah we had it pretty rough at times, but I made a lifelong friend I talk to this day from playing this very game. People who missed out on the TDU 1 era '06 - '09 will never ever know the true extent of how ground breaking and revolutionary this game was for its time. Nothing held a candle to it before and even after its release.

The fact that streets you already visited turned bright blue on the map is such a nice feature and motivates you to explore the whole island and every single street (which i didnt achieve iirc) . Also that the speedometer is always the one from the real car still amazes me. A few things I'd like to say considering I finished the PC version not so long ago: - My Xbox controller worked just fine with analog triggers and stick steering. It must have sucked to use D-pad. - The PC version is smooth only if you play it at 90 FPS (and 90 Hz refresh rate of course - VRR solves that). It seems physics are somehow tied to the frame rate and the game just isn't smooth at 60 or variable frame rate. By the way, the same applies to TDU2. - If you have nothing to play on your phone, give the PSP version of TDU a try. For me, it was just the very best handheld gaming experience ever. It's so cool to have whole Oahu in your pocket. The game also quite differs from the PC version so you don't have to be afraid you'll play the same game again. - I strongly and absolutely disagree TDU2 is better. Although the graphics are more advanced, TDU1 still looks more realistic. In addition, you can't set the seat position anymore in 2. Nothing has improved in terms of cockpit view (I hoped the other gauges in addition to the speedometer and re meter would work but nope). And the most importantly, the driving model really sucks. Very boring and absolutely not challenging even with all aids off. Also the career is boring. Oh, you've got a new car? Let's go through the f.cking driving school like you've never been behind the steering wheel. The only advantage of 2 is that it lacks those blocky low poly roads that made 1 sometimes more of a flying simulator rather than driving simulator.

The invisible cars is a framerate thing. Lowering it pretty much gets rid of it. Although one problem that will not go away, is getting a perfect score in some of the vehicle deliveries is impossible as you run over dodgy collision. It'll happen like 9 times out of 10 in some areas. The hilly areas to the west are terrible for it, even on the flat bits. I like larger maps as well, sure detail will be less, but it has the same effect as a small map seeing the same small set of streets over and over anyway. And you can't fault this game's map as it's a real place. It's a driving/Racing game, not a GTA or life sim game....there's no real need for the map to have anything in it to interact with much, sure that can be nice, but I'm here to race. At least the Crew, had a large map with varied scenery, also based on a real place and also in the US....mainland, which was nice. The cities were even a decent size. You ever played Vette! on DOS?

There's one detail that I could add to the video: not only a lot of racing and action games followed this sandbox approach to lifestyle and taste, but also some sims such as The Sims and specially second life. Think about it, at this time we were starting to massify our presence in social media, either through myspace and facebook, and Second Life was running along that trend, too. for anyone wanting to jump back into TDU1, as i did very recently, the easiest fix (FOR ME!) was limiting my FPS via nvidia control panel to 60 because TDU 1 is one of those games in which the physics can fuck up if your fps are too high

One thing i noticed with motorcycles in TDU is that they handle much better in first person than in third person. I think that its mainly due to the limited animations in third person, we react to how vehicles appear to move as much as the actual physics underneath, the animations in first person feel much more fleshed out than in third person. Hell once you get used to the first person view you'll notice that the handling is actually quite good, you can even powerslide bikes for some style points.

My favourite game of all time. Genuinely don't care I'm missing half the content on Xbox 360 this game has been the one friend that never let me down throughout my life. I appreciate this video so much, capsulated everything they got right, although I think you could have delved deeper into the many issues throughout the game that you don't really notice until after a few playthroughs but you probably didn't have time for that; for example, people complained about Forza chucking supercars at you but I can get an XJ220 within an hour of starting this game and no one cares.

Driving around the map is amazing, you can do it for hours. Most car sounds are amazing too, like the CC8S, XJ220, Zonda and Spyker C8. Each car feels and handles different, and even small details like unique speedos are great.

Ah TDU, the game that solidified my love for role playing. I'm glad I found and played TDU2 though, and I have a few video gameplays about it actually. As u said at the end, it has much of what TDU has, but with many things someone WISHED they could do in TDU like walking around interior areas, day and night cycles, awesome weather changes, flying between islands and extra role play features like taking down the roof of convertibles and having indicators too! If only bikes were available offline for TDU2. Personally I found the 1st person view on a bike cool.

was so excited finding out TDU would be back when it was first teased absolutely ashamed that the new TDU just did everything wrong, the first TDU was such a good childhood vibe, driving around aimlessly, doing the delivery missions trying to 100% them with chill music plugged into the xbox 360 and playing it, what a time that was

Hardcore mode adds a ton of feeling to the cars. The physics are actually quite good, even if the gravity of the car gets weird. I also played this exclusively with a wheel and it was a blast in in the janky MP. What TDU does best that newer games do not is sense of speed. The roads are realistic, not a mile wide, and bumpy. Makes going fast feel SCARY.

TDU Platinum is still active, it tweaks the physics to be on par with Gran turismo when you choose "Hardcore" mode and the FPV camera is the most immersive I've ever seen in a video game. Off road, race and street courses, something for everyone, be it new cars or old-timers

4:32 "reviving to a better spot than it launched" Except no, because race lobbies aren't restored, neither is the club functionality and whatever else is missing. All you can do is cruise with people and do point to point challenges (which have a stupidly low range limit); 10:19 Too high framerate issue. Cap it to 60 and the entire game should be fine; 15:25 "dpad because of poor controller support" The game supports analog steering. It works straight out of the box with an Xbox 360 controller, so just get software to emulate the 360 pad or run it through Steam. You can't set the controller up to work exactly like it did on Xbox 360 but it's good enough; 22:12 Considering how awfully the sequel did those, I'd say that's a good thing. And besides, the most important part of a driving game, is the driving.

Frame rate wasn’t an issue, tried everything on PCgamingwiki and wasn’t able to fix it. For the controller using DS4windows to emulate a 360 controller still doesn’t work, sometimes these things just don’t work as expected

ive replayed this game countless times. i legitimately cant tell you what the actual number of playthroughs is for me, ive lost count. i love it. tdu2 didnt scratch the itch, solar crown was a huge disappointment. tdu somehow makes cruising fun, no other racing game has given me so many hours of just cruising, delivering cars, trying to get 100% of all roads discovered etc. just to touch on the invisible cars issue and npc's changing lanes quickly or stopping abruptly in front of you, these days you have to lock the game at 60fps, it solves all those issues.

Test Drive Unlimited isn't a masterpiece in any regard, but for players it still is a great experience after all these years, as for the industry? It's awe-inspiring. Car dealers are physically on the map, and you can literally drive into their parking lots, get out from your car and walk into them. As for Forza Horizon? You just "spawn" new cars from the void. Is it efficient development-wise? Sure. Is it impressive for players? Immersion ruined. Completely. Sure, the map's level of detail is pathetically low, but that's BY TODAY'S STANDARD, and we have to remember that this is a game that came out in 2006. My PC back in the days couldn't even handle Bayview city in Underground 2, let alone Oahu Island (I have this vivid memory that I played it for the first time - at 15 FPS.)

What defines a "Masterpiece" when it comes to driving games? Any driving game over 10 years old has aged like milk in many regards, as new entries in the genre co-opt the innovative aspects of older entries, and refine them via technology advancements.

I played it recently and I have to say it feels really good, sure the later one is somehow better but in the first one you really feel special, I love how you can make themed garages (like the all red Italian exotics I have in ala moana). The motorbike physics are really cool imo, the fact that while cornering you don’t have to hold the analog stick make you feel like you are actually leaning the bike and the way those rotate and loose the rear end on corner exit feels actually accurate to irl motorcycle physics. You mentioned having problems with controls but I played on PC the vanilla one(sad because I didn’t have the pleasure to enjoy dlcs) with Xbox one joypad and never had a problem with the driving controls

I think the biggest pro of this game is the scale of everything. Makes it easier to dream, a mountain you see far away actually takes you 30 minutes to get to it and then when you cross it it actually takes a lot of time to see the coast again. In forza, when you see a massive mountain, you cant cross it, which makes me get bored quickly

Thanks for this review, I think that Solar Crown, like you said, is "the price that you pay for ambition", compared to TDU1. And yes, to me, this game should be compared more on TDU1 than it's sequel. I'm sure the team is working on it and I hope for the best of this franchise that has so much ambition and potential, but that has been not necessarily been fully exploited due to multiple parameters

It funny. I think the true spiritual successor to Test Drive Unlimited is not either of it's sequels. Nor competitors like Forza Horizon who have mostly tried and failed to capture TDU's essence. It's Grant Theft Auto Online. GTA V managed to capture all the lifestyle simulation aspects of TDU as well as the immersive open-world and expand on them significantly.

Had this game since release, constantly played it back when the servers where up. But even after that It got moved over to every new PC. Yes you dont like to review a modded version, but the single player gets elevated so much with the Platinum mod and is almost a must- have for me. While I cant get TDU2 to run right and dont like some features they added there, TDU1 Platinum runs very well. Sadly no game till this day can replicate what TDU is and stands for.

The PS2 version is fantastic as well. It still has the cockpit view, and it blows me away how the open world is still visible through the windows and moving around when you sit in the cars inside the dealerships. A bit annoying that manual gears aren't available, and a few cars and houses are missing, but a great version nonetheless. The PC version is great too- the increased detail and extra content is greatly appreciated. Not sure why or how they made the reflections move the wrong way along the car! Nice retrospective; not really sure why you think the concept of being attracted to women is "very early 2000s", though.
