I’ll just elaborate a little more. Spoilers ahead: The umbrella academy travel to a timeline in which they don’t technically exist. So they were never selected as the umbrella academy. Their parents were remotely killed by Harlan before they were born. Ben’s mother was not killed as Harlan never met Ben(he was a ghost) . So in this timeline Ben survived and was selected for the Sparrow academy. It’s been awhile so please correct me if I’m wrong or elaborate more if I missed details.

This scene literally ruined the entire show making sense. They should have never showed #5 mom dying because it means the old man #5 couldn't exist. The blitz is only started when a grandfather event has happened. It even affects the commission that is outside of time. This means that old man 5 with the missing arm has already been through the trail but failed because at the point of his arm being cut off the universe was destroyed which means the commission should have also been destroyed making it impossible for younger 5 to meet old 5. If they succeeded old 5 would have had his arm back like the ending we saw and if they failed then every time line would be destroyed meaning it can only be one blitz
