In this video I will use the open source software Freecad and prepare a milling job for my Genmitsu 4030 CNC. The aim is to mill a profile and pocket toolpath. The stock material I am using is a fairly hard maple plywood. The stock material I am using is a fairly hard maple plywood.
We will design a simple 3D object with a pocket, prepare the model for CNC machining, create the toolpaths, prepare the post processing and exporting the GRBL based GCODE code and finally mill the pocket with my genmitsu 4030 CNC.
In case you want to understand CNC programming and GCode in more detail, you can check the additional videos that cover the topic:

Hello, I liked your video and I subscribed. I have been doing CNC machining for more than 20 years. I believe your part would have been perfect if you reversed the machining order, I E work from the center to the perimeter. That way the part would be held very well until the very end. I have a suggestion for another video. I have not been able to find a video on cutting templates. I E cutting a thin piece of stock say 2 or 3mm thick. These would be cut in one pass , inside cuts first. I think it would be a popular video as there are a lot of uses for that kind of cutting. Model airplanes, boats, jewelry boxes etc.....This kind of machining is so useful. Thanks for your time !!

Very good video to learn and apply the processes in "Path". In practice, the problem of clamping the workpiece and the sequence of machining would arise. Ok, I see - material is plywood an for fixing you use double-sided tape 🙂

If you think about the most important part of your video it is the interaction with the FreeCAD software. Looking at your video the items you are selecting and manipulating in the menus and project tree are tiny and you go really fast. It is useful information but presentation could be improved a lot.

I agree. There's a special place in h*ll for people that make instructional vids using personalized layouts instead of default, hotkeys and move hyper quick without ever saying what they are actually clicking. My screens do not match his, I can't find half the things he's clicked (further complicated that some buttons have been renamed, not his fault), this vid should be all my answers but I'm stuck 3 minutes into it, had to leave to watch 3 other vids to fill in gaps and now that I'm back here, I'm stuck again 5 seconds later.

Hmmm I have a Onefinity Journeyman CNC. I use Freecad about 50% of the times and VCarve Pro the remaining 50%. FreeCad has some very nice features that VCarve Pro does not

Hi Carl, I sometimes use Blender. It´s not a CAD software, but good if you want to create quick results. You can check some of my videos to get an impression. For the precise stuff, I use Freecad or Fusion.

The G Code is always in millimeters, even though everything (as far as I know) is set to standard inch. I've tried every "fix" I can find online, and it still comes out mm instead of inch.

Hello . Thank you for your great video which I found very useful to follow If I may ask. I am also using v19 of freecad and then tried it with version 20 with the same results In your video where you do all the path work ... In depth, I do not get the option for final step down In operation, I do not get the options like cut mode, pattern, angle, stepover percent, etc... Am I missing a step that would enable those option ? Many thanks

Finally worked it out after watching your video a few times It was there but I did not spot the subtle difference betweenteh two path operation s You uses a profile path for the outside and a pocket shape for the pocket shape which enables all those missing options Keep producing more great videos Stephan

Interestingly enough, I also do wood turning I am thinking of projects that combine both wood turning and CNC finishes to that. Perhaps that is something for you to experiment with and do some youtube videos on
