much much appreciated! I enjoy making this type of video, but there's a part of me that feels like maybe less production so I can get more videos cranked out is better. But... I'm glad to hear this is well received because these types are funner to me, all while still trying to get the info out. Thanks for the comment!

@@ummagawdFPV you aren't wrong, I had the same thoughts when I watched it.. more to the "I wonder if he's getting his value in production back". There will be a middle ground, it won't be totally transparent but use the same theories you do with quad r&d for your value realization vs production cost exercise.

Agreed. Having gone through a similar process designing a performance sub 250 3" cinewhoop or "cinepick" as I dubbed it, I can really relate to this type of content and the story and presentation, humour etc. rounds it all off nicely. Not to rub it in but I hit my design objective with about a gram to spare although sub 250 is less of a concern for me now since they changed the laws here in the UK and now even sub 250s have to be registered. :'( Also I wouldn't have been inspired to design the quad if it wasn't for your 85 and 95x naked builds. Keep up the engaging content.

unfortunately I see the writing on the walls too. @@ummagawdFPV The tech is moving fast enough that 250g will be readily achievable within a year or so. In the meantime I'm happy with my sub250g 3-inch and 4-inch quads that fly every bit as well (in my shaky hands) as most of my 5-inchers. The challenge of getting things under 250g is almost as much fun as flying the resulting craft :-)

Yeah as much as I love seeing Tommy explore the 5" limits, it's far less headache-inducing to go for a 4 incher. Micro Reverb, 1408 mamba motors with 4023 pros, 20x20 stack plus 20mm VTX, 750mAh 4S battery and TBS Nano RX make a wonderful freestyle rig for just 249g and fly like a champ ! Goes anywhere from 5min hard freestyle to 10min cruising...
@shoecrew8485
@shoecrew8485 4 жыл бұрын
@@gizzta I think the problem is the budget for the frame, it needs to be around 30g to have a reasonable battery. Also disk ratio is a factor. having very high weight to thrust ratio is not helpful if you do not have the weight density to cut through the air. As a matter of fact even 4” may be on the verge of too big for 250g.
@gizzta
@gizzta 4 жыл бұрын
@@shoecrew8485 yeah my 4" reverb is kinda floaty and some moves lack inertia to be doable... I can't imagine a 5" under 250g that would be good at freestyling... I mean, sometimes I prefer my 3" "kinda-heavy" build even if it is not as endurant as it sucks batteries so fast

hey Tommy, first of all, amazing work ! Full of info and enternaining as usual. Im just wondering why not go the 4" route. I do understand that 5" has been the golden standard for so long and you want to keep that size but it seems like there are just too many compromises. you are at 269g, cutting down to 240 means an 11% shave off the current build which will be very very difficult on an already light build without sacrificing something. thats like trying to cut 60+ grams on a light weight 5". But with a 4" this seems doable, a slight scale down of everything would help you get under that 250g with that bit of a room to spare without too much compromise. Anyways among the reasons 5" was golden also had to do with the size and weight of your typical gopro, things just worked great with the existing hardware when 5" started becoming a thing, but now those times are kind of over, you said it yourself. Also, other developers have already proven that you can have rock solid performance and smooth flight with under 5" quads, so props and frame dont absolutely have to be 5" to be good. I also believe that if you keep the weight the same but reduce the size a bit it might make it a bit less floaty, since the overall density increases a bit (footprint and air drag decrease). Have you considered 4" ? ... and yes, it does have to land at like 240g or even 235g AUW for it to be universally accepted, people cant always find the exact batteries you have, they use different power cable lenghts, different straps, different screws, different receivers, different antennas, and even the solder blobs themselves can make a few grams of difference...

Excellent video! You put so much effort in your videos. Really loving them. The 'ittle things usually add up quite a bit when you are doing a sub 250g build. I've done a few and I usually always budget the weight at about 235g or so from the 'known' parts. The wiring, standoffs, bolts, 3D printed camera mount, xt30 cable, zip ties, capacitor, lipo strap, small lipo anti-slip pads, ... all the knick knacks just add up in the end. Currently building something similar. 5" sub250g park flyer based on the BetaFPV 2004's. A custom single bottom plate 4inch thick frame totaling at about 27grams w/o standoffs etc. Target is to be able run with GNB 550mAh 6S (450mAh is hard to come by in Canada) and still be slightly under 250g.

I'm gonna pitch the idea again for the frame.... Those new motors would be awesome on a 4in Acrobrat too, if you ever decided to release one.

I wonder if it will be able to fly decent on beaten up props or if handling will go out the door after one crash like 3” ultralights.
