This whole opera is stunning musically, but honestly, this is one of Puccini’s weaker arias. Has no sense of direction, gratuitous modulations, and uninspired high notes. Butterfly’s entrance is much more elegant than the aria, in my opinion.

Well, Puccini frowned on stand alone arias in general so this could easily be seen as him creating a sort of monologue instead of a traditional aria.

@@krist-yonnarain7786 I would have to disagree with you. Puccini wrote many stand alone arias, especially in his early to middle works. He was no Wagner, nor a Verdi. Possibly somewhere in the middle. My thinking is, if a composer does not like a stand alone aria, he will not bring the aria or “monologue” to a cadence. That separates the number from the drama completely, in my opinion.

I agee the entrance is a better piece. However, this scene has immense dramatic power, and it serves dramatic purpose. Butterfly singing about how everyone is wrong and one day he will appear on the horizon and they will be happy. Everyone in the audience knows she is wrong, and this love song of hers is played out as a tragedy, which is something that can be heard in these very notes.
