Jean-Pierre Ferland is the man who wrote the song many years ago. Once Ginette Reno sang the song, she " owned' it!! Ginette Reno is a legend here in Quebec and is the greatest singer of all time. Even now in 2021 she's still going strong and her voice is still has powerful as ever..Mme Reno did not want to have an international career, she wanted to stay here in quebec. We are soo proud of her and of Celine too.

I live in Quebec City, which is where this concert took place on the legendary Plains of Abraham. These two women are godesses here in Quebec. They are known to be the very best singers Quebec has every produced, and this performance was a one time thing.

We would listen to her in the car, when I was little, and at one point I would see his hand lift to wipe away a tear. La mer si petite que soi... They are sooo high up, they see the sea as a tiny pool at their feet. But being that high, the person they love can no longer see them! This song is about a journey, a metaphore for climbing for fame or power, and seeing your love ones left behind, far, far behind you. And as they sing, Farewell! I'll come back!... If I can come down without falling (to my doom). Beautiful song about the strenght and sacrifices needed to ACHIEVE.

Ginette Reno à interpréter pour la première fois cette chanson à la fête nationale du Québec en 1975. Ainsi la chanson est souvent associé au mouvement séparatiste ou souverainiste du Québec (reprendre ça liberté) un peu plus haut, un peu plus loin.

Hi Jar, to answer your question, this song was written in Paris in 1969. It was a song about breaking up. Ferland lived through a painful break up. That was he's personal way to reach some solace. But he didn't want the song to be too sad. It's a hymn to hope. In 1975, when Ginette Reno came back from a USA trip, she asked to sing the song for her coming back in "La Fête Nationale du Québec" (24 juin, Saint-Jean-Baptiste). It was a hug success. Since that day, the song gets a different meaning because of the explosive political context in Quebec in the 70's. It has become a hymn to hope and to the empowerment of a people. I loovve when you react to our music in here.❤️Thanks again for that.The province of Québec is in majority french people.We live in a country,Canada, wich is different than ours (language ,culture,tradition) So back in the days, we held a vote for people to chose to stay in Canada or to be a country. The artist were involved and were doing shows about it. One was at the very same place of this video. It was young Ginette singing this song with the dream of liberty freedom and hope for the future. It didn’t happen. This show was at the (don’t remember the year) anniversary of Québec. So to me the meaning is like it’s a journey to go higher,wanting more. Then the feeling when you get there...it’s beautiful. My two cens 😂

BTW looking at all your reactions I was surprised that you never reacted to Angelina Jordan. She is a very young Norwegian singer with amazing talent. ...there is a huge history that goes with ginette and céline singing together >> ..say it simple...rené angelil...was ginette reno's manager in the 70's... and rené was preparing for ginette to grow her career oversea...and she choked out..because of her husband and kids...so it put an end at rené and ginette working together... and years later... rené met young céline... so for céline to get that chance to sing with ginette...was huge... this is why céline is crying at the end...she got fame and fortune...because ginette leave the spot for one super talented singer to work with rené...

the story about this 2 singers...are more than this performence!... René Angelil...was Ginette Reno's manager in 70's.. and when her career was set up to start oversea...her husband freaked out..she was already a mother...and chose not to take the jump...and quit her contract with rené...that ended him close to bankrupcy...later... Céline's mother wrote her a song..that her brother wrote the melody...he send an audio cassette to mr.Angelil...and...here is there rest of that story...all that Céline have..the international career..the money..the fans...all was set up for Ginette...and she leave it there...this is why Céline is crying in the end..

Just a little correction... Jean-Pierre didn't write this song for Ginette, it was a song he wrote for himself actually.. following a breakup... Renée Claude sang it several times before Ginette also...
