Many people won’t like you removing the “originality” of the instrument, but if someone’s owned a bass for a long time, what’s wrong with them wanting to experience the joy they felt when it was shiny and new all over again? The lacquer is there to protect the wood. Having areas of wood exposed due to it wearing off means the instruments more vulnerable to humidity changes. This restoration will preserve the instrument for another 50 years.

Wear a mask and use an extraction fan when working with jewellers rouge and polishes. You don’t want those fine particulates building up in your lungs.
