Was that revealed after the show ended? Like he was just considered by the directors but didn't actually try out? I just can't imagine being turned down by a show and watching it go on for multiple seasons only gaining in popularity and then coming back not even as a regular guest as their own character, but with the joke being that you're the "twin" of the character you were going to be... maybe that's overthinking it lol. But to me that would feel like salt in the wound. I guess he had no hard feelings about it.

I think the biggest thing about Joey throughout the series is that while he isn't the brightest and his mind seems to be only thinking about one thing, at the end of the day he would do anything for his friends and I think that is what makes his character so special.

From someone who grew up in the 80’s & early 90’s….it took so long to make a full mix tape which may be why Monica felt so guilty, she thought he spent serious time on it

Yeah... tape was not a good medium for short form media like songs lol. VHS recording a show or movie on TV was fine. But I remember the early 2000s having a tape in my radio and when a song I liked was announced I would quickly hit the record button. But you'd end up missing the first bit sometimes because they wouldn't announce it and you'd hear it start and be like "Oh, I want that one!" or after listening to what you had you would try to stop right at the end of the last song to be ready to record the next one but you might end up cutting off a bit of the last song lol.

Yeah Joey did get dumber as the seasons went on. It's sometimes funny and sometimes frustrating. If you go back and watch Season 1 you realize how many nuances about his character got lost over time

Joey is absolutely getting dumber. It’s a trope called flanderization. The longer a show goes on the more their characteristics get exaggerated. In the later seasons Monica is so shrill and an overbearing clean freak and she just annoys me so much, but I like her well enough earlier in the show. In the earlier seasons she actually seems like a person but later she’s just an overblown caricature of herself.

Oscar : you asked about women taking self-defense classes on TV shows, and besides this Friends episode, I also saw it on a Designing Women (late 1980s) and Reba (early 2000s.) But I don't know if it accurately reflected a real world trend or was merely seized upon by sitcom writers for its comedic potential.

"Unagi" and "Salmon skin roll" is iconic 😂 Unagi is indeed freshwater eel but the term as Ross means it is actually "Zanshin" which is used in Japanese martial arts. Someone made a video of the scene where Ross talks to the guy at the self defense class without the laughing live audience which makes it even creepier. All jokes aside, if some guy told me he "tried" attacking two women (who are his friends and one of them his ex-wife btw) I would call the police. Women's self-defense training began in the early 1900s in the US and the UK in the form of boxing, wrestling and martial arts (especially jiujitsu and judo). I'm sure there are still self-defense classes all over the world. The sad thing is that, globally, almost 1 in 3 women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence at least once in their life. The saddest thing though is that in the majority of cases it's someone they know, love and trust, like current/former partners or family members. The student/teacher thing has happened in real life quite a lot and it has been done in several TV shows (though mainly in high school). Pretty Little Liars is one where it was a teacher around 25 and a 16 year old student, and the worst thing is it was heavily romanticised and the main audience were teenage girls who didn't realise how wrong it was. Of course this situation is a bit different since she is 20 (and he about 30) and in college but the age isn't as much of a big deal as the fact that he is her teacher and there is a certain power imbalance there. And though she said the semester was over, I assume he would possibly continue being her teacher the next semester. The scene where Rachel says she wants to stay at Joey's took several takes as Lisa kept cracking up. It's one of the funniest bloopers and I would share it but I can't find a video without possible spoilers from other S6 bloopers. Fun fact: Louis Mandylor (Carl) actually auditioned for the part of Joey and the choice was between him and Matt LeBlanc.

god the more i rewatch this show the more i realise i love everyone except phoebe who i so rarely actually find funny.
