Hey Drakkart ... :) A villager goes into idle mode, if no player is in range (32 block radius) and he has nothing to do. But by uprooting the plant in the middle he is always busy. After seeing Xisuma build this I just had to have a go. My base is mainly underground, and it slotted nicely in between the Sheep Farm and the tree farm. So I dug a hole (that took 4 days of my Minecraft playing time). Then in one day I built this thing. Awesome!!! In a few hours the 6 double chests are approaching FULL, and I moved a double chest to a more friendly location. This is one of the best farms ever! Why? Because it actually farms your food. I have 3 gold farms, so I can get a shed load of gold nuggets (and also ingots in one of the farms). So golden carrots as food, I love tata tots as a food source also (unless in a stress combat situation), but my world is so far along now, I mostly control when combat occurs. Wonderful build, I love it.
@zaxxon4302
@zaxxon4302 10 жыл бұрын
To start with, it went great. Then I made a hopper system to send the carrots & potatoes to my trading hall. In no time at all, trading with 3 farmers, I used just about all of the six chests, and as I also have Xisuma's melon & pumpkin farm feeding the system too, I converted everything to just over 2 stacks of emerald blocks. Now, I want these 4 farmers to work harder LOL, as I trade the stuff so fast it will never fill the system. Thank you very much for this farm.

If you have more villages around the area, you can get the farmer to harvest crops quicker, but I need to do more testing.
@Unarybit
@Unarybit 10 жыл бұрын
I think that's max. The farm can't be much bigger, because the farmer would not see the farmland in the middle and goes in idle mode after a while. The size of the farm is perfect for one farmer, with two farmer the plants would not grow fast enough.
@MrBlockmeister

Hi Unarybit. Love the simplicity of this design. I have one question though, doesn't the low light level of 7 near the other villager mean that mobs can spawn there? It would be bad news if a zombie spawned there.

Just for comment. From time to time the villager in the center caught food from brown-robed villager, so I filled the inventory of the center one with seeds, that makes sure he/she would not pick up anything.
@delson84
@delson84 9 жыл бұрын
+wanga10219 This is an amazing idea if it works. It would help make the farm failsafe against patches that might result in villagers gaining food.
@PentaSkittlez

Does this actually work? Wouldn't the farmer stop giving food to him then?
@wanga10219
@wanga10219 8 жыл бұрын
Fortunately, seeds are not considered as food. Thus the brown-robed villagers think they are hungry, and it is reasonable. Also, I have tested it in SSP (1.8.9) and SMP in a 1.9.2 Spigot server.

In the 1.9 snapshots, the villagers are a little taller. I can't directly place a block on top of their heads, so I used a piston instead. However, I used glass, and it seems like this might allow them to pick up food occasionally if it is dropped from higher levels. I'll have to try a solid block -- this is too good a design to give up!
@nathanryan4145
@nathanryan4145 9 жыл бұрын
+Ednoria I've tested by increasing the vertical separation between the farms by one block. That seems to have done the trick. The non-farming villager can even be standing on a bottom-half slab, rather than carpet, and the farming villager will still attempt to share food.
@Unarybit
@Unarybit 9 жыл бұрын
+Ednoria Hey :) I have copied this answer here from another comment: Because of fixing the hitbox bugs, the villager stand now correctly 0.0625 higher on the carpet. So the Villager can now catch the food from the water stream. You only need to make the water stream 1 block higher and place a full block where the water source was before. He can not catch the food from the farmland. I've also seen that food which is thrown by the villager can now land on the slab. Maybe we should replace them with trapdoors.
@Unarybit
@Unarybit 9 жыл бұрын
+Nathan Ryan Yep It also works with bottom-slabs. At that time I decided to use carpets, to make it more compact and because the chances are higher that the farmer throws food, the closer he is to the other villager.
@anazopyreo1
@anazopyreo1 7 жыл бұрын
Sometimes the potato on the piston doesn't get dislodged. I haven't been able to figure out why, but this does cause my farmer to become idle.
@BaumMiner
@BaumMiner 10 жыл бұрын
I had another version. you could use just fence instead of carpet d the villager on top, cause the farmer will throw the carrots slightly down, if they are at the same hight and just 1 block gap. but the idea with the luring is just brilliant
@Unarybit
@Unarybit 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much :) I have tested several versions also with fences, but that has made the farm not stackable or at least unsymmetrical. I decided for the version with the carpet, because it was the most effective (the closer the farmer is to the other villager, the more likely it is that he throws food). and he throws it under him, which gives good building options.

i've built two of this identical design in the same world. One for potatoes and one for carrots. The one for carrots works fine, the one for potatoes just refuses to work and it has been driving me insane. The villager will plant new crops, but will never harvest and will never throw food to the other villager. I know his inventory isn't full because I've made him place all his seeds until he can't place anymore. I know the design works because it works for carrots and it's the exact same for potatoes. I've even swapped out both of the villagers out of frustration and even the new ones refuse to work. The villager is a farmer, mob greefing is turned on, there isn't a village nearby and the farms are far enough apart. Everything that should make it work is there, it just refuses to work.

Very cool build. I built this on my SMP server and it worked like a charm for a while. I build it inside of a mountains exactly as is with a viewing gallery. After a while the villager harvesting stops doing anything and is constantly trying to pathfind out of one side of the farm. I don't know where he wants to go. There are no villages nearby, nor any breeders. Ive replaced the middle villager to no avail. I have a 2 layer minecart wheat farm 20 blocks away from the outside of these farms and those villagers are having no issues. I'm at a loss :(

Hey Unarybit , great video and nice explanation of the game mechanics behind the design. One question you may be able to help with ..... I've built 2 levels of farms , the farmer on the bottom is planting and throwing carrots really well but the farmer on the top level is just walking about . He visits the un planted spot right under the other villager but just stands there for a while and then walks off. My breeder is at least 80 blocks away and the whole thing is built in the sky over a taiga biome . I just wondered if you had any ideas what might be causing this ? .. thanks man

he's planting and harvesting .. it's all potatoes and i've given him enough stacks to fill his inventory. I also took the farm down and rebuilt it next to the other on the same level but about 5 blocks away and it's still the same . I'll try a different farmer in there and see if that changes things... might take a while though cos farmers are pretty rare spawns in my world :) ... thanks for replying though dude .

This is absolutely amazing! 2 things though - 1, why cant it be within/near a village? and 2, an almost 20 second intro is like 15 seconds too long imo. If it wasn't for me having such a huge issue figuring out how to prevent lazy mode, I would have clicked out of your video after the 10 second mark. I say that out of helpful criticism, not rage :)
@Unarybit

Hey thank you :) The farm can not be built near a village (33-64 blocks radius) because the villagers then stop the "work" and make only one thing: find a way to the village ;-) It can be build within a village (32 blocks radius), but then the farm produces 25% less. And it is not 100% reliable because villagers can get into a "loop" where they always spinning around. They only come out of this loop if you push them from their position, or by reloading the chunks. So it's not fully AFK able...

Because of the intro... I understand what you mean. The intro is only for special uploads, but currently I upload only those videos. If I start a Let's Play where I release weekly, then I would definitely choose a short intro. Thanks for your feedback I think about that, but not for the next video ;-)

Unarybit Yeah I actually had it built 60 blocks *under*, what the AI would consider a village (multiple houses with doors) and the villagers just ran near the edges most of the time. I destroyed the doors and they got right to work. So I'm guessing maybe it's 32 blocks in just the X and Z? Regardless, I'm just glad that I found the answer to their laziness haha.

Hope that helps :)

Can you mix both carrots and potatos in the same field or do you have to separate each on a different level? Bonus question: Why can't you also plant wheat in these? Thanks!
@agjaerkvnerkongklenvzelknf8427
@agjaerkvnerkongklenvzelknf8427 8 жыл бұрын
+Scott Thomas You can't actually use the both in the same field. I checked out another video that did extensive research, and turns out they will only plant what's in their first inventory slot. This happens to mean they only plant the first crop they pick up, so they would just harvest the carrots and potatoes, but only replant the first one they picked up. Wheat doesn't work as well because the villagers pick up the seeds and wheat well, but then have difficulties delivering the wheat. Basically, if you want to use wheat, you have to set up a really complicated minecart with hopper system that automatically collects the wheat. It's mainly because there are two drops instead of one, so villagers have difficulty understanding what they're supposed to do with the extra item.

There are quite a few spots with light level 8 in there. The wiki says that carrots and potatoes only grow at 9 or above. Does that matter for the efficiency of the farm?
@Unarybit
@Unarybit 10 жыл бұрын
That's what the wiki says ;-) Plants grow from light level 8. But even if it were true, there are only a few spots with light level 8 compared to the huge platform. So it wouldn't lower the efficiency of the farm.

Newoo96 Yeah, in this case the light comes from above so the light above the crop is one higher than the light at your feet, which is what the F3 screen tells you; if it says 8, it's 9 at your head if the light comes from above, which means that it can grow according to the wiki, which is correct.

Fantastic design, i've been stealing a lot of them, from a lot of people who know what they're doing and you're one of them. Mumbo Jumbo is high on my list and of course impulseSV , you guys do a lot of great work. I build your farm design and it worked like a... dead turtle. I thought, perhaps there needs to be a village nearby, to make them willing. Nope, i read through the entire comment section and found the answer. You're villager in the middle needs to be free of food, perhaps something worth mentioning in the description and perhaps you will consider adding my solution to this problem, because it will save a lot of frustration and questions. So, here's the solution if you want a food free villager to stand in the middle of the farm, without having to turn a zombie villager back into a normal villager, or get a new one from a nearby village. Believe me, it works, i did it myself. Now what if you're villagers are fed while being bred, how will you know how much they hold? It doesn't matter, because if you breed your villagers with carrots or potatoes, you can totally clear out the brown robes , the same ones who do the farming, Don't use bread for breeding, because wheat farmers make bread from wheat and you will never be able to clear them out. Push a brown robe guy in a mine cart and on a 4 by 4 dirt patch, surrounded by another layer of dirt, so he can only move around in that area, by you pushing him around and of course a water source on the same level as the 4 x 4 patch, which you plow into farmland. When you stand in there with him and you push him around a bit, he will plant whatever he has in his inventory, which you can then harvest and this way, he will be completely empty at some point and ready to do his job in the farm, meaning, standing on a patch of carpet and look pretty. so i suggest breeding villagers only with carrots and potatoes, because wheat farmers make bread from wheat and you will never be able to clear him out. So once again, great work on the design and a BIG LIKE. btw, build it in your spawn chunks, so the farmer will never stop working, as long as your in the Overworld. Or use the mechanism that shoots an item into a Nether portal every 40 seconds or so, if you're in the End or the Nether a lot. I know there's a design out there somewhere, just can't remember who did it.
@Unarybit
@Unarybit 10 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks man :) Yeah... I had to explain a few times that the villager in the middle must have no food in his inventory, I added the information in the description now. To unload a villager with a brown robe, you only need to put him on a platform with farmland. He plant until he has no seeds in his inventory ;-)

Hello Unarybit, there is a problem with this design in the latest versions. I don't mean the farm but the villager breeder. If you check the villager in the minecart, who resembles the instant on/off switch, you will notice that he wont stay at his place. E.g. when the farming is activated (villager in minecart is on the upper part) after some time the minecart will move on its on and go back down. I guess the new villager hitboxes might be the problem. Can you think of a solution for that?

So you mention a layer of solid blocks underneath the farmland is needed for mobs not glitching through... is this still a thing? And even if it is, wouldn't it be also possible to lower the ceiling so it's two block high, having the solid blocks at the level of the glowstone?

Hey Unarybit, thanks for the awesome design! I have a question about the villages... Does that distance respect Y? My base has a standard iron farm (40-door) at each corner, and the walls are 80 long... The center of my base would be 56 away from all the doors... If I built this in the center of my base, 30 blocks up, would I be OK? Or do I pretty much need to build this well away from any iron farms / breeding centers / etc.
