If you are not coming back in another half an hour, I'm quite pretty sure that this man would ask the staff come over, checking your stuff then look for you. If you still not show up, shopping mall as well as police would be informed. They will then check the cctv, disperse staff to look for you in every corner until you are found. People will care about your safety instead of your valuables. That's the Chinese way in caring others. Hope you enjoy your stay. 😊

Or a great patriot who didn't want someone from his country to make his country look bad. The Chinese have a great sense of patriotism and for the beautiful quiet and safe life they have, they are not going to risk themselves for a computer, on the other hand, in the United States, a life always suffered with little, you would have to buy a computer even before it hits the table

CCTV is not the fundamental reason, but the essence lies in the impact of poverty on public security. For decades, China has been committed to helping the impoverished population. The "Village to Village Connection Project" helps everyone build roads, connect water, electricity, internet, daily necessities, and transportation in their residential areas. The "Home Appliances to the Countryside Project" transports various household appliances to all rural areas and sells them to the rural population at the most favorable prices. Some extremely poor people will receive free gifts, Including the current "poverty alleviation project" to help all impoverished people escape poverty, those without houses to build, those without labor to receive subsistence allowances, and those without jobs to hold training courses and contact local enterprises and factories as guarantees to help find jobs. Will anyone who has a beautiful life and can see hope try to steal and destroy it all? As I said, CCTV is not the reason, poverty is.

To be honest, it’s not the camera that prevent people from stealing. I bet almost all Chinese people don’t even notice the cameras except for foreigners who watch too many western news. We despise stealing and if we really need something, we can buy them ourselves.

If it was in the US, it would be gone in 1 minute, and on eBay as soon as it is wipeout or the hard drive is swapped out. Also, the reason the laptop wasn't stolen in China might be that gentleman who sits on the table to make sure nobody does something stup!d. Otherwise, someone would take it and give it to security or do something else with it.

In China, kids are taught in school to return those lost to police or someone around like cashier that can wait owner back. No doubt when kids grow up, they will remain honest. China herself is a truly honest & trust society. It is quite rare to hear someone gets something stolen.

This experiment you have done will be about the same in at least other East Asian countries like Japan, South Korea and the SE Asian country Singapore. These countries also happen to have a lot of CCTVs. But CCTVs is not the only preventive reason, I think the quality of the locals in that region as well. There are quite many CCTVs in London and New York too (esp on a per capita basis), but I bet you may not be so lucky. But why not test my statement by putting your laptop in a London or NY cafe in the open space? It's be interesting to know how it turns out. Still, even in those 4 countries above, low crime doesn't mean no crime. It's better to be safe than sorry.

As a Chinese person, I would like to point out: Firstly, the living standards of most Chinese people are decent enough that the general population sees no need to resort to illegal means to obtain goods. Secondly, due to the widespread deployment of cameras and the implementation of a cashless society, criminal activities have almost nowhere to hide. Law enforcement can easily retrieve surveillance footage to track criminal activities and use legal procedures to obtain payment records to identify suspects, making it difficult for criminals to evade legal sanctions. Lastly, the cost of committing a crime is extremely high. Once someone has a criminal record, it is not only difficult for them to find employment within state-owned or institutional organizations, but their children also lose the eligibility to take civil service exams, which is a severe blow for those who value stable government positions.

I believe now it's pretty safe. But I don't think it's always been like that. Back in the days when CCTVs were not everywhere, I am sure any valuables would be gone like many places in the world. It's just normal human behavior. But with cameras almost everywhere, and facial recognition is top-notch, people have been trained to behave. I wish cameras were installed everywhere in America too!

As someone who’s lived in China for many years, I’ve got to tell the truth. In China, people usually don’t steal valuable items like computers, phones, laptops, and wallets because it’s considered a crime (theft becomes a criminal offense when the financial value is over 1000 yuan, which is about 130 US dollars). However, things like lighters, tissues, ballpoint pens, phone chargers, and USB cables often go missing in Chinese offices. One reason is that they’re not expensive enough to be considered a crime. Another reason is that everyone kind of assumes these are communal items

In USA your unattended Mac would have disappeared within 5 minutes. In all US Apple stores the computers and phones are tethered with a steel cable to the table and each device has a shop-lifting sensor attached. But the American thieves are very resourceful and aggressive - they have come in gangs armed with wire cutters and attacking Apple Stores in broad daylight.
