My dad born in Peoria, Il in 1909 & was a USNR Seabee and spent Christmas 1943 in the New Hebrides on Woodlark Island. Japanese air raids and lack of decent food, contaminated water and dengue fever and malaria and tropical heat and humidity affected his health until his passing in 1996. He always made sure we three kids had a great Christmas

Seth and Bill, thank you for this moving coverage of Christmas during the war years. Christmas 1944, the USS Franklin was in Bremerton, Washington after being hit by a kamikaze on October 30th. My Dad told me that he and so many of his shipmates were filled with trepidation about returning to the front when the Franklin's repairs were completed. They didn't know what to expect, but they were certain it was going to be bad. I think on the 832 of Franklin's crew killed on March 19th, who would have their last Christmas - My Dad's best friend, Ray Milner, who would die on the hangar deck waiting in line for breakfast on March 19, 1945 - the families of those men, who would spend their last Christmas season here in 1944 with their sons. My Dad and many of his shipmates were able to go home on leave when they were in Bremerton. Your podcasts are like the time machine that my Dad created for me, when we would talk about the war years - the good times and the bad. This episode in particular was a Christmas present that you gave to all of us. Thank you both, and have a wonderful Christmas. Walter Smith.

My wife's father rode a destroyer from the east coast to the pacific. Based on you 300 plus episodes I have learned a great deal about what was going on as he arrived in the pacific to serve in picket duty. I hope to give his children some perspective on his contribution to the war effort. You guys are a national treasure.

I just can't stop thinking of the agony Gold Star families, especially the mothers, endured during this most joyous Christian holiday. I think playing White Christmas, secular not withstanding, really brought it home. Great job on this episode. Merry Christmas Seth and Bill. Wishing you both a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year!

"White Christmas" gets me every time I hear it. Bing Crosby's voice was so heartfelt and special after over 80 years ago. What always brings tears to my eyes is the memory of our boys fighting around the globe during the war. So many of them would never see America again. God Bless them and their families.

A personal note: My father never recovered from his Christmas (Multiple) in Pacific with 1st MARINE DIVISION. We his children always saw the under laying pain in his eyes at Christmas. I spent two Christmas overseas twice. The first in 1983, on mess duty(I volunteered for) in Iwakuni Japan. The second in Bahrain for Desert Shield, getting ready for Desert Storm. That one had a great deal of unknown hanging in the air. MERRY CHRISTMAS Ladies and Gentlemen, and may God continue to Bless and Keep us All. SEMPER FI !!!

Thanks, guys. You're right, this episode has me leaking a little. I was deployed in Aug 1990 in support of Desert Shield, and there during the holiday season of 1990. At the base which would house the 801st Bomb Wing (P) shortly before war erupted, the holidays were a continuous shuffling of combat aircraft and weaponry to the Sandbox. While in the downtime it felt a little glum, thankfully I had to work on Christmas day and was too busy to really think about it (I was a firefighter and we were pulling constant stand-bys for dangerous cargo, refuelings, along with other, more mundane duties for our entire 24-hour shift.) What struck me was that here on this day, which I as a nonbeliever honor as a day of peace on Earth and good will to all, we were knee-deep in preparing to kill people and break things. That juxtaposition was jarring and gave me long periods of rumination the following days, weeks, and years. I can only imagine what it meant to these men and women of the time, both at the front, in the rear, and at home. It's a crying shame that both peace and good will were and still are in such short supply.

The USS TANGIER was part of the rescue mission sent to Wake Island. She carried supplies, ammunition, and Marines. The plan was to run the Tangier around on Wake as an armed fort. It is likely none of the men on board would have survived the Japanese assault. Tangier survived WW2 and was sold to a shipping company. She was scrapped in the 60s. The end of this episode was very hard hitting. So many of the greatest generation had such a very hard time coming home. This happened again 20 years later when the Vietnam vets came home. Thank you.

My dad was on several ships in the South Pacific and Central Pacific during the war but his favorite was the USS Montpelier. On Christmas day 1943, he was in the Solomon Islands from Guadalcanal to the west. On Christmas day they ended up selling an island, I don't know the name of the islands, but they had gotten word there was a Japanese Garrison on that island so they spent the day shelling it. My dad said it was really depressing and several of the boys were in tears from home sickness. My dad said Christmas 1943 was the worst Christmas he had ever had. We can never downplay or forget what these men did for us. Rest in Peace Dad you did your job and you did it well🇺🇸⚓️🙏💯💖

Watching this a couple weeks late. I've watched all of your programs. Some more than once. I wanted to tell you what your series has done for me. I was born in the spring of 1950. My father was in training as a flyer during the war but lost an eye and never went to war. Probably why I'm here today. My mother was in Wichita, Kansas building planes throughout the war. My favorite uncle who became a dairy farmer after the war was a Chief Petty Officer on the original Thresher submarine. Your series has put me in touch with my father's generation, and thus my own to a much greater extent. My deepest regret is that I had no understanding or feeling for what they went through. That I did not sympathize with them. That I did not understand them and did not have the presence of mind to even try. Now I have a great sadness but also joy that I have, thru you, touched them to some degree. When we all meet in heaven I will be closer to them than I was in this life. Thank you.

Another terrific episode gentlemen, thank you so much for posting it! I believe Bing Crosby was very possibly the most iconic American singer of the war years but I recall reading an account of an American soldier who after the war could not listen to Crosby's hit White Christmas without thinking about the time his unit was being overun during the Battle of the Bulge, and White Christmas was constantly being played on the radio (most likely in this case by the Germans.) One must think of all of those young men in the Pacific on the many islands and atolls, on the ships and submarines at sea, and the airmen enduring hours of boredom and tedium mixed with moments of terror-some beyond comprehension-all missing home and family during the holidays. I think of my own dad who spent his 18th birthday and Christmas of 1944 in both a foxhole and tent as a Navy Seabee on the island of Saipan. Bless all of you boys. Merry Christmas Seth and Bill, and thank you once again for these wonderful podcasts!

After corresponding for months, my parents met at the Houston Shell canteen in December of 1942. My Mom, a San Antonio debutant, was working as a Secretary at Shell. My dad, the son of a Beaumont oil refinery Forman, was a Signalman 3rd Class working the convoys in the Navy's Armed Guard detachment. Mom always claimed they fell in love in that canteen with Bing Crosby singing White Christmas. White Christmas was their song.

To me, there is no way that "I'll Be Home for Christmas" does not express the tragedy of loved ones separated, whether by war, distance, or death. When I think of these things, as you portrayed in your opening minutes, I cry too. For that matter, the image of the priest praying over the fallen Marine, which you show at the beginning of every episode, tugs at me. Folks wanting to know more about what went on at the American home front should read The Darkest Year by William K Klingaman, Darkest Christmas: December 1942 and a World at War by Peter Harmsen, and The American Home Front by Alastair Cooke. It's also instructive to listen to radio news from the period. Reports of war are interspersed with reports of threatened strikes, slowdowns, black market activities, graft, skimming, and fraud.

Merry Christmas to everyone involved in bringing us these outstanding presentations. You give your audience a gift of great value with every video, and I thank you. This was another excellent show, timely and poignant. I've read Bob Hope's autobiography, 'Don't Shoot, it's Only Me,' wherein he talked about the Christmas USO shows he put on for the troops for decades--he spoke about how meaningful "White Christmas" was to the troops, and how the song would often bring the men to tears. "White Christmas" was always my favorite secular Christmas song, but once I learned of its additional meaning, I love it even more. I agree with everything you said about the incomparable Bing Crosby and Holiday Inn--I could listen to Bing all day, every day, and I've seen Holiday Inn more times than I can count. Great to have it get a shoutout in your show. Have a wonderful holiday season!

_It’s A Wonderful Life_ always had special meaning for me because Bedford Falls was inspired by my home town, Seneca Falls, NY, which Frank Capra had visited. Various elements and features of the town were included in the film, so as a kid, watching it was like a real life experience. Jimmy Stewart’s performance always felt like it was really something he had lived through. Now I know what he was drawing from: the hell of war. Also, 47:51 I absolutely agree that nobody does tell it or would tell it like you guys tell it. Merry Christmas, Seth and Cap’n Bill.‼🎄😎🙏

Such a perfectly pertinent episode! As a Baby boomer in extremely patriotic locales the concept of Christmas was always attached to OUR BOYS OVERSEAS. There was Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan to follow PEACE ON EARTH can comes only when the savior arrived. Our presence, as was our chaplains presence on Dec 25, changed the overseas scene. The world will always need a savior

'Christmas' is far, far older than Christianity. There is no accident behind the date, despite the fact that Jesus (if he lived) was actually born in the period between May - August, as that's when the census was recorded in the Roman Empire of the period. The Winter Solstice Celebrations of various 'pagan' religions were simply appropriated and the 'Christian' Christmas essentially fabricated around customs and traditions that had already existed for centuries, if not millennia by that point.

@@richardbennett1856 actually, an episode dispelling the myth we were unprepared would be good. In December 1941 construction of all the new ships was already underway (Clevelands, Essex, Independence, etc) , the liberty ships and jeep carriers were already underway, we were already building Wildcats, B17s and Shermans by the ton and development of the Hellcats and B29s was almost complete. We already expected Japan to do something, most likely in the Phillipines but expected it wouldn't come until 1943 or so.

My parents were born in 1930 and 1932. They both told me what numerous biographies I have read regarding American survivors from World War II Philippines confirmed, that Christmas 1941, 1942 and 1943 were tough, emotionally, as victory seemed far away. 1944 was filled with anxiety as the Battle of the Bulge was not yet over, but the end was clearly in sight. The war left an impact on everyone who lived through it.

I used to see "It's a Wonderful Life," year after year, along with "Miracle on 34th Street," "The Grinch," "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer," "A Charlie Brown Christmas," and "Frosty the Snowman." beginning about 1964. I wasn't aware at the time that Jimmy Stewart suffered from PTSD, but I've learned tons since then, especially here, from you guys. I must point out that I'm a huge fan of classic film, and learned quite a bit about the genre from the late Robert Osborn. From him I learned about Frank Capra, the guy who directed "It's a Wonderful Life," he too came out of the war with PTSD, after directing "Mr Deeds goes to Town," and "Meet John Doe," Capra lamented being able to turn out such hit, post war. "It's a Wonderful Life," bombed in theaters. 1964 was a mere 19 years after the end of the WWII, everyone involved in all those Christmas classics I watched growing up had a part in the war...

As a near 70 year old Canadian I have lived the experiences you have deceived so vividly. My mother had three brothers overseas in the European theatre and my grandfather manned the big guns guarding the entrance to Halifax Harbour. Christmas Eve through the sixties was always spent at my grandmothers house (cottage) with talk mostly about the war years. Most of my uncles were were profusely injuriously impacted by their experiences and the alcohol demons were ever present. These men were heroes to my brother and I but more often than not we saw their faces mared from a recent fight somewhere. My dad was a locomotive engineer who stayed home who told us once he may have worked seven years without a day off. I miss them all - thanks so much for these true reflections.

There are lots of folks in my neck of the woods also "Dreaming of a White Christmas" tonight; thinking "I'll Be Home for Christmas"; but everyone here knows nothing is guaranteed and sometimes dreams likely never will come true. Thats life. The more things change, the more they stay the same. All the best to you and yours. V/r-IB

Great episode, gentlemen. I think I fall between Bill and Seth in age and my paternal grandparents had an artificial tree that DEFINITELY had toilet brush branches. 🤣

Merry Christmas you two. In Denmark we celebrate tonight, so I probably cannot watch today, but I do wish you a Merry Christmas and a great year ahead, with much happiness. The German 1993 movie Stalingrad has a scene of their Xmas celebrations in Stalingrad. That is appropriately desperate.

Merry Christmas. Thank you for keeping the show going. It is a gift to us all. Just a suggestion, a show on the composite a-bomb crew (Groves, Tibbets, Ferebee, Lewis, Parsons, etc) I believe would be an episode of great interest. Especially with the navy and arny combination..

Merry Christmas guys. This was a wonderful episode and a great reminder of the price that was paid by our fathers and mothers during the great war. Please remember our friends in Ukraine who are fighting a near-peer war (a real war like WW2) this Christmas all along the front from Kharkiv ro Odesa.

As a baby boomer I used to hate ANZAC Day because of the alcohol that my father used to ply himself with. The war left its mark on my father.

One of the interesting photos of wartime Christmas I found. Was Lt Lou Bangs of VB-10 landing an Avenger on Enterprise (CV-6) dressed as Santa.

A heart warming scene of WW2 is the soldier giving a little girl, shaking badly, a drink of water. Iwo Gemia? Always have wanted to know what happened to the little girl. Do you know? Want to believe she was taken to a rescue ship. Then where?
