I paused your video to read the historic information sign, which said that 40 acres of cordwood was abandoned when the charcoal kilns closed. The amount of deforestation caused to feed those kilns must have been stupendous. So in the mining heyday all the nearby hills were stripped bare of trees, I imagine, and smoke filled the valley. It was good to see trees in the background as you walked away from the kilns -- nature healing the land, to a degree. Some landscapes that seem naturally treeless, such as the Scottish moors, were actually forested until people cut all the trees. Centuries later, trees have not been able to reestablish the forest there. As for my favorite parts of the video, it's the footage of your SUV threading past the rocks in the narrow canyon, and the drone footage of the beautiful lakeside campsite with the snow-frosted trees. Nice camping trip, thanks!

Thanks Glenn. Yeah, the additional drone footage was a focus of this trip. It's a pain to do (gotta stop the car, pull out the drone gear, get the drone flying, get back in the car, drive, turn around, drive back, land the drone, put the drone away, etc.). But it's something I'll continue to do when I have the time and temperament to do so.

I look forward to watching more of your adventures. I appreciate your attitude about aspects of camping that are not the norm. Kind of "if it works for me, it's good enough". For example cooking the meals ahead, then heating them up ---the cheese/meat/veggie package, not a lot of gadgets and special equipment, etc.. For future reference, some of us enjoy seeing some of the things you seem to worry might be mundane and not worth sharing. For example, the rain, settling into a new camping spot, etc..
@SUVRVing4 жыл бұрын
The sad reality is that the longer a video like this is, the fewer views it'll get. So I have to balance telling the story of the trip with also making sure people will watch it. After the initial edit, this video was about twice as long and did indeed include some more "mundane" footage, but I generally try to keep this kind of video under 20 minutes, so some stuff had to be cut out. In this case, it was stuff like looking out the window at the rain and snow and me talking to the camera in the car about random things. To me, those weren't the important parts of this particular story to tell. Thanks for watching and commenting, Miss Lindalou!

I agree about Tristans camping style. Do what works for you. I'm a very low-tech camper. Once I was at a campground on Cape Cod (the only way to camp there, and the only one walking distance to the beach) and some guys walked by my camp and said " oh ya hillbilly camping" . Lol.
@larrydraper44514 жыл бұрын
I agree with Miss Lindalou and I understand Tristan's response. I am retired so if you post an hour long video I will watch ALL of it. I'm stuck in this "stay at home" scenario so I have plenty of time to watch. I enjoy viewing your videos and have gained knowledge from them. I'm waiting to see if Yellowstone will open camping facilities in time for me to use my reservations made back in January. I need to get on the road and travel like Tristan. Slow down, look and enjoy the road trip. I'm from Texas so it is a long road trip but did it last year, and will do it again and again as long as I am able. Thanks to the "SAH" I had to cancel my trip thru Utah, so disappointed. I expect Utah will still be there next year.

I am at heart a day hiker, not a multi-day backpacker (tried that once, was very scared I would die by slipping off the trail into a cold river, granted trip was ill-advised & in fact I should not have been allowed to do it - went with local county parks/recreation, I was out of shape & it was a winter trip) but day hikes are doable especially now that I am in much better shape. Thank you SO much for sharing all your adventures with us!

My favorite so far. Thanks for the coordinates so we can follow along. As you and others I think the corraled alcove is an archeological site. At 8:12 looking at the alcove with you in the foreground I can see what appears to be campfire black running up the wall of stone in a couple of places. My bet is that it's a well-used Shoshone fishing/hunting camp. In those days it was easy for the Indians to harvest salmon with spears in small streams..

@@SUVRVing ~ Agreed, but most modern-day people camp with tents, camper trailers, and campers with a vehicle and other modern conveniences. The alcove would have been more suitable for yesteryear's style of tentless camping when people needed shelter from the elements. It appears to me the alcove was used more in a time long before the road was constructed alongside it. But I haven't been there so I bow to your intuition. I sure enjoyed this particular video.
