Today's unboxing review is of one of our favorite pickup trucks on the market today, the 2017 GMC Canyon. Why is it at the top of our list? Because it (along with its corporate twin, the Chevrolet Colorado) is perfectly sized for those who don't want or need a full-size truck, such as the Ford F-150 or Ram 1500. The latter trucks are great and all but, let's face it, they're big. And it's too bad Ford dumped the Ranger pickup a few years ago because GMC has really struck gold here. Our tester was a 4WD SLE Crew Cab Short Box, powered by a 3.6-liter V6 with 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. Power goes to the rear wheels through an 8-speed automatic.
With its Cyber Grey Metallic exterior paint, the Canyon's overall styling is a great blend of toughness and luxury. The Canyon is more than happy to go off-roading or something more simple like a run to the hardware store. Heck, even the mall is no problem. And that's why so many people are buying this mid-size truck; it simply does everything well. What's its competition? Well, it obviously doesn't come from Ford. Aside from the Colorado, its closest rival is the Toyota Tacoma. But which mid-size pickup truck is right for you? Do you want something with a touch of luxury that can also rip through muddy roads? If so, we've found your new truck. Enjoy the review!

guy proulx what I mean by this as far as the midsize segment goes as far as quality and options and everything else I do believe GMC takes it. Especially with the Denali package nothing else comes close to it. Now on the other hand Toyota Tacoma is a wonderful truck and has been proven to be a superior brand in the segment dominating it. And is the number one truck and car for resale value and overall reliability.

How is the acceleration and ride? I love the F150 style but you don't get half of the features of this truck for the same price. Really like the interior. Almost like a nice car but it's not. I am going to look at the 2017 Canyon SLT tomorrow.

Wow Jay! Great review! See this is what a modern truck should be, no extra safety features unless optioned on, no push to start. This is a truck I would consider, except I would want a Colorado. Maybe I'll trade my Versa in for a Colorado in the future.

I love these trucks ... great job inside & out. The prices keep getting higher and higher, but the competition tracks into the low $40s for a similar loaded 4x4. I'm starting to see used ones ... low miles for $32K.

Just picked up a 2017 SLT with the diesel engine. Get about 23 MPG, same as my 2016 Chevy Impala I traded it in for. Honestly I love the truck. My local dealership was getting rid of the 17s for the 18s and I got it 11 grand off the sticker. I have owned an F250, multiple F150s and a BMW and the Impala. I love this truck and would recommend it to anyone. The back seats leave a bit to be desired in the leg space but it is totally fine for short jaunts around town. Decent bed space and is a joy to drive. Is it perfect, no. But it fits my needs and again, really fun to drive. Does pretty well off road too. I took it pretty serious sand dune off roading already. I honestly plan to turn this into an overland rig. I think it was a good buy.

It's a great truck its has the power and the 8 speed transmission does its job..... I drove the V8 Sierra and then I drove the V6 ,8 speed transmission with the 3:41 ratio and I actually felt like the canyon had a quicker take off. ...weird but its smooth and a gas saver to ....one day to work is about 12$ to $15 vs the $25 to $30 on the Sierra.... let's see how it does on the long run....

I'm four months in with my special ordered 2017 Canyon Denali Duramini diesel. It's replaced my 06 Silverado HD crew, and my VW Jetta Sportwagen tdi. (Thank you, VW for buying back a vehicle I loved dearly, but bye bye). One new vehicle for retirement, and I LOVE it! As loaded as they come. Don't give a rat's butt about push button start, and I hate sunroofs. Yes, for this kind of money, there SHOULD be blind spot detection, mirror mounted turn indicators, absolutely. But, for the features I wanted, it's really a perfect compromise. 30-33 mpg running solo at 75ish and capability to haul my boat or a camp trailer ... VERY quiet like I expect, super sweet ride and handling. Fit and finish are flawless.

Very nice review....thank you. Mentions people trading in SUVs for this, but a possible emerging market could be old folks like us who have a 1500 Extended and 2500HD Crew Silverado, but are downsizing :-( as we get older. The default for us was the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which we really like (have a 2014), but it has too many reliability issues, like decides at random times to just not start, and nobody associated with the manufacturer can get to root cause . The Canyon has similar handling, including good turning radius.

I owned a '04 Colorado for 10 years and replaced with this model, '15 All Terrain edition. Its acceleration, mpg, 6ft bed with Crew Cab and all the extras make it worth every penny. My '04 sticker was almsot $29k but only paid $21k for it since it was a year leftover. I paid only $35.5k for my Canyon, but you do inflation over 10 years, you aren't spending anymore money than the sticker for the '04. I totally recommend buying this truck. MPG is great if you don't have a lead foot. State highways in NH are mostly 55mph, so mph has gotten as high as 30 mpg. The new '17 has an 8-speed and cylinder deactivation in a V6. Tows my 1,200lb side by side easily

The diesel is the one to get. While small diesel trucks are common overseas, GM is the first to bring one to the US. The diesel is not a 0-60 drag racer, but once the diesel hits 6th gear on the highway, it rarely has to shift down with all that torque. It just snoozes along at 1,800 to 2,000 rpm (80 mph ish speed wise) getting high 20s to low 30's MPG. Pretty cool to be able to cruise at 80 mph in a flying brick and flirt with 30 mpg. If you plan to tow and actually use the truck for truck duty, the diesel rocks too. The new V6 is free revving and fast though, a good choice also, and way more responsive than the Tacoma and it's ill shifting 6 speed. Sad thing is, these trucks are in demand and there are no signficant incentives on them. One can buy a full size Sierra or Silverado for less than a Canyon/Colorado. The full size trucks are ponderous though, and, to be honest, these "lifestyle" trucks suit my dirt bike and 20 foot RV toting needs just fine and they are more fun to drive than a full size day in and day out. Nice work GM. I hope they sell tons of them.

False, this truck was tested on the fast lane truck. They compared both the v6 model and the diesel engine in the same truck. The v6 was faster, and towed the same weight trailer faster up the hill and had more power while towing it. The diesel is for fuel economy only. The rest I agree with you
@CoalitionChris
@CoalitionChris 7 жыл бұрын
RuggedSportsmen It was extremely clear the diesel towed the same trailer as the v6 twin more effectively. towing isn't about speed, it isn't a big deal the v6 was faster. the diesel handled the trailer better especially when stopping/slowing, which is more important than "getting going" to most people towing often. A trailer brake controller in the gas truck will definitely help, but the diesel comes standard with it and the exhaust brake cannot be denied when it comes to usefulness towing (also it has a higher tow limit and locking rear diff standard). And can't forget what you mentioned, the fuel economy sure. Getting an SLE/LT 2wd diesel isn't as expensive as some people thing either. seen them as low as 30k.
@Duken4evr1
@Duken4evr1 7 жыл бұрын
The V6 is indeed faster with it's superior horsepower, but it was also at 5,000 rpm or more the whole time up that hill. Would rather roll down the open road at low rpm cruising efficiently with the diesel getting 16 to 20 mpg pulling a 5,000 pound load vs. single digits for the constantly revving and gear scrounging V6 doing the same work. In the end it depends what one wants from their truck. For those who actually use it for work (within it's small truck parameters) the diesel is pretty cool as it is relaxed and efficient. For those who rarely pull a heavy load, the faster sportier V6 is better. It is all good really - GM finally gave small truck buyers a choice.

It's a beautiful truck no doubt. I'm also seriously consider this one for next year but a $7K price hike for the 4WD option seems insane. The bigger brother Sierra can be as expensive as this after the permanent incentives. Let's see how everything plays out once Ford introduces the Ranger and Nissan refreshes the Frontier...

To those who say just get a full size... I have a Sierra and drove a Canyon loaner for a few days. The Canyon is every bit as nice. The 3.6 is nice and as quick as 5.3 Sierra. The 20s on Denali handle great on the road. The Canyon is a nicer daily driver and easier to park and fit in garage if you don't need the space/capability of full size. Sold my camper and kids are grown so I'd now trade Sierra for Canyon. The reality is 90% trucks are mostly used for commuting and the Canyon is better for that. Not dissing full size by any means if you need it get it, but these also have their place! The price difference is closer to $10k but they often discount full size more especially when sales are slow and gas is expensive. :). I'm waiting for the coming downturn and bigger rebates and may move into a Canyon but I'm not in any hurry.

Cant disagree with the cost to repairing aluminum- as for the strength, I have seen pretty impressive durability vids that show they will hold up pretty good. I am betting that others will follow suit on the aluminum bodies in their strides for fuel efficiency. Proof of that is ford is bringing out an F150 diesel so Ram will need to counter with bringing down the weight of the Ram 1500....aluminum will more then likely be the path and I am beating Ram will take it further with a reinforced aluminum sub frame. Cheers, Patrick

I'm a yota fan but they fucked up with that Atkinson 3.5 DI V6 and there are tons of complaints on both the engine and transmission. They should've stuck with the 4.0 that was proven! The new ZR2 will dominate the Tacoma Pro which has a sticker price of 47k !!!! No diesel or front locker either! So yeah Toyota has some work to do! guy proulx right!!!! Lol the new Tacoma's engine is junk! The transmission junk! Which is why they are looking to bring there 2.7 diesel here if they can get it passed emissions.

This truck is beautiful, but it doesn't make sense to buy. On GM's website, you can get a full-size Sierra with the same shit for only $2000 more. The gas mileage between a V6 Canyon and a V8 Sierra is only like 2mpg. If your going to pay over $34,000 for a truck just get a full size one that can do more.

That's why you let some other fool waste their money leasing a brand new one, then scoop it up. That's how I picked up a 2016 Canyon SLT Crew with 12k on the odometer in perfect condition and all options (except 4wd) for $26,000

The midsize trucks from GM are ok looking, but the upswept back windows make them look too Japanese, and the best thing about American trucks is that they look American. These trucks would be worthwhile if they were priced accordingly, but for the amount GM charges I'd just get the 2.7L ecoboost F-150 dragster which would stomp any of the three engine choices in the midsize GM's, and still get comparable mileage. The diesel is the only engine that makes this truck feel substantial, otherwise the two gas engines are very tinny and give the truck a lawnmower-like feel. GM is being hypocritical and foolish denouncing Ford's aluminum bodies in their commercials for the Silverado. Anyone who would spend 35 grand or more for a truck will take better care of it than they portray. I can't wait to see what kind of commercials GM comes up with when they go to aluminum bodies just to keep pace with Ford.

@tomsriv

Same here. Colorado off my list because only black and ugly gray. But good luck finding the tan in a Canyon. My experience is that we are the minority and most dealers will only order cars with black interiors. European cars are much better about light colored interiors, but those dealers only order cars with exterior colors of black, white and silver. Boring, Boring, Boring.

Both wrong. 1500s are full size 1/2 ton light duty pickup trucks. The Canyon is a mid size pickup truck. 2500s are full size 3/4 ton heavy duty pickup trucks. 3500s are full size 1 ton heavy duty pickup trucks. 4500 and higher are full size medium duty trucks.

George GMC Sierra Denali i love GMC, but these trucks are overpriced. And because they fly off of lots, they dont discount them heavily so your out hear paying the stupid high MSRP. My Dad just bought a brand new terrain with more features than this truck for $24000. And it was an SLT. This SLE truck shouldnt be more than $28000 tops
