People continually miss the point about full-size vs. mid-size pickups--it is this: Full-size pickups are simply too large for some applications--tight off-road trail use, urban parking, smallish garages, etc. For people with those types of needs, a mid-size pickup is often better suited for them. Often lost in these reviews is the fact that even extremely off-road capable full-size pickups can't go where they won't fit. Probably at least 25% of the off-road 4WD trails where I live fall into that category. On those trails, my full-size pickup is useless; I have to have a second smaller 4WD for that.
@randythompson4006

You'll find the midsize are much larger on the trail too. If you need a trail machine buy a cj they are much easier to offroad than these luxury trucks.

@@navyphyrfitr6550 People take 40k+ Jeeps offroading all the time. I mean, that's their actual design purpose. I wouldn't take a truck at all no matter what the price because the turning radius always sucks no matter how small they are, compared to a Wrangler. And these new mid-size things are the size of older half tons. They're not true small trucks.

I work at a Ford dealership in Massachusetts and last week I took a Ranger Lariat supercrew up to Maine (130+ mile trip). I also bought myself a 2018 Colorado Z71 extended cab back in the fall. My assessment: The Ranger has more comfortable seats that are easier to slide in/out of, I like the torque from the EcoBoost, the FX4 package includes more skid plating than the Z71/All-Terrain package does from the factory, the B&O stereo in the Ford sounds a little better to my ears than the Bose system in the GM trucks, and the interior feels a bit more spacious thanks to its higher roof line and sloping dash design. The Colorado and Canyon are better looking to me, I prefer the n/a 3.6 V6 over the 2.3 EcoBoost I4 for longevity, the ride is much quieter, I like the bumper and tailgate setup better, and the biggest thing for me is the front end suspension/steering setup is a lot better than the Ranger's in every way, even down to the steering wheel. Overall in this case I slightly prefer the GM to the Ford, but honestly I'd be happy with either one. Also I took the front air dam off of my Colorado, didn't notice a big difference in fuel economy but it's way more confidence inspiring now in rough terrain, plus it looks better without it.

Randy Thompson You considering the ranger to have capability is a great reason for YOU to buy one. But telling others they’re wrong for making decisions based on their own preferences is what’s truly wrong. And just for the record, saying there is no turbo engine that sounds great is as wrong as two boys kissin in a female prison. I would def agree this particular engine doesn’t sound very good but you must have never heard an old Detroit 12v71 in person. It’s a personal favorite of mine but some might argue it’s a bit excessive. Still there’s a straight piped Cummins or Fords 7.3? Both are well known, highly desired engines that a lot of folks absolutely love the sound of. And even if you were meaning strictly gas engines the Subaru WRX and Mercedes G wagons both sound absolutely beautiful.

The hankooks ... ranger has more technology in my xlt .. it has blis adaptive cruise control folding mirrors .. in other words if you talking money ... the supercab fx4 xlt and the xlt ranger fx4 are close in price , f 150 a bit more , going up to crew versus crew it’s 8 thousand more ... you buy a ranger because you want a ranger not instead of a f 150 ... both have uses and purposes for me but if I could only have 1 it be f 150 .. .. you buy a ranger because you want a truck not a car .. you buy a f 150 cuz you want a truck

This is the sad truth about the marketing machine behind what the truck manufacturers are promoting, though subtly. Let's say Joe wants to buy a new (full size) truck with a few bells and whistles. No problem, MSRP for the truck Joe wants from any of the big three, Chevy, Ford, Dodge is between 42-50 g's. Joe, says, "holy sh$t, I can't afford that." Dealer says, "don't worry, we can get you into a new truck (albeit much smaller) that you can afford between 32-45g's." Joe says "great, I get a new truck." We (Joe and all the consumers) just keep drinking the Kool-aid. In reality the manufacturers are just creating a product for the demand that unfortunately most people simply cannot afford. First and foremost, trucks shouldn't cost consumers anywhere near 40-50g's. It's just crazy. Full size trucks shouldn't even cost over 35 g's. These new models will be the rise of the popular trend of small truck purchasing, and I'm sure the manufacturers will do very well sales-wise. I remember talking with a Dodge sales manager, and I asked him, " how can trucks sell for over 50 g?" He said simple, "because people are willing to pay 50 g for a truck." Consumers often forget they are the most important driving force in purchasing decisions.

Cannot believe how far these guys are in the tank for Ford. The riff about gas mileage and break-in was the last straw. I kept watching up to that point, despite the editorializing about the GMC's far superior braking performance being attributed to the difference in tires. TFL does themselves no favors. Their audience is guys who understand trucks. Trying to paper over the Ranger's deficiencies is lame. I really like what Ford is trying to do bringing back the Ranger, but they are simply falling down on executing their strategy and it's taken them WAY too long to get a solid competitive truck into the midsize space. A big let down.

Have you not heard of the numerous reports of piston problems within the Chevy Engines, people are having to take him back to the factory before 70,000 miles. But that's just my two cents

Ford adapted the global ranger platform to the U.S. market and said global platform is coming up on a redesign. Given that it's close they most likely decided it would be better to hold off on making a completely brand new off the ground ranger until the current global generation ranger came up on the end of its life cycle. It's actually a pretty smart business move that when you look at it from their perspective makes sense. Why make a brand new ranger for just the north American market earlier than what you projected the redesign on the current ranger to be only to have to introduce that redesign into all the other market segments? From a logistical standpoint it would be a mess.

@@Michael-ho2yl Enjoy the Colorado! It looks like a nice truck. I'll have to check the forums and see if they still have timing chain issues. Despite the problems I've had with my Outlook and its incredibly bad gas mileage, we like it and can't find anything to replace it with that we want to pay for so that's why we still have this thing. The list of things that go wrong with the Acadia/Outlook/Enclave/Traverse of those early years is long and common and found on many online forums. Mine has had them all. Most fixed under warranty except when the transmission broke for the 3rd time and the timing chains needed to be replaced for the 2nd time (for $5000) along with the actuators and some other parts. My car has always had regular on-schedule maintenance. I'm not sure if I'm on water pump #2 or #3, I can't remember. Steering rack #5 or #6 maybe. Power window switches fail, speakers fail, small plastics parts on the engine break causing it to leak oil and of course its a $1 part that costs $200 in labor to fix. Numerous seals have had to be replaced to stop fluids leaking over the years. It only has 140,000 miles on it. So far, my reasoning has been that whatever the repair costs are has to be less than what the payment would be for a new car over X number of months, then it still makes sense to have keep the car. Right now, because of the timing chains, its has to last until October of this year to start being cost effective again and that's based on a $400 a month lease payment for a new car - which is unlikely these days since I do not do cap cost reduction on leases and if I finance, payments are much higher than that anyway.

@steverowe2943 5 жыл бұрын
@Alan Bowers My 20 yr old was a 99 Silverado 2500 and was well maintained. The truck previous was an 88 F-150 standard cab manual transmission also well maintained that I kept for 11 years. The standard cab just didn't fit my family needs so I went to the extended cab. Both were good reliable trucks (not beaters) and neither ever left me stranded. The key to such a comparison is being well maintained which is hit and miss in the used market for vehicles that old and often have multiple owners. I have pretty much come to the conclusion that any video title with the word "best" in it is nothing more than click bait.

You can't really fit rear facing child seats in there with the proper gaps recommended between front and rear seats. You can fit one on the passenger side if your wife is short. I really wanted to buy a Colorado ZR2 but the actual space inside with a big car seat just didn't allow it. I consider it a tie between Ford and GM. Why? GM gives you so many options on engines, packages, and so forth. The 2.8 diesel has been killing it on fuel economy. The gas V6 you don't have to worry about turbo issues. Buy a Ranger and it will cost you. Dealers want near full sticker price. GM will give you 5-8k off most of the midsize line. Its like a fully loaded Canyon Denali Diesel for the price of a Lariat Ranger. If the Ranger was competitive price wise it would be an easy choice for a lot of mid size buyers.

Is that the best Canyon you can get or can you get like a ZR2 Bison type of setup with skid plates , better tires and all that other good stuff that you can get on the Bison.That would be cool. I'm not all that worried about sound .If I was I would get a F 150 V8 instead.

A ZR2 is $39k loaded off dealer lot. Show me a new Ranger with that value. I get why you guys stick to MSRP but when it comes to real world pricing it's often off the real mark significantly.
@ashes2ashes863
@ashes2ashes863 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for making that point. I was thinking the same thing. Honestly if I was buying one of these pickups with the assumption that I was going to be really be driving it off road, I would just buy the ZR2 over the canyon version because the ZR2 clearly is where it's at. I like the canyon, but I just think it looks too much like a Sierra without the capability anyway and if I wasn't going to buy it for the purpose of playing with off-road, Id just buy a full size truck. Maybe if I lived in a city my situation what be different, but I'm not in that spot. What interesting things I know about these smaller trucks, there are two people that I know while in my neighborhood that have them. One has a Colorado and the other one has presently a Nissan but he's looking to upgrade to either the Colorado or possibly the new Ford. They both had an explanation for wanting a truck that size that sort of made me laugh. They're both older guys close to retirement and they said that and their Heyday when they drill pickups, that's how big they were. They think today full-size trucks are ridiculously oversized. And that's why they like the ones they're driving. I guess I kind of see their point. For me though it comes down to it the cost of each.

@PeakDecline 5 жыл бұрын
@@ashes2ashes863 I knew the price because its what I just paid for my ZR2. It was $39K USD off the lot and had nearly every option available for the ZR2. It had $6000 on the hood AND a 0% APR for financing. I went to the Ford dealer to see what I could get a Ranger FX4 and they were not moving right now on price. Why would I have paid $43K for a FX4 Lariat when I could get a ZR2 for $39K?. And this is why I have an issue with any reviewer positioning the Ranger as a "value" pick. Its not the case with real world pricing. As for why I went with a mid-size truck... its simple. The current full-size truck line up, especially say the Raptor, is too wide to fit down many of my favorite trails or reach my favorite fishing spots without some serious headache. The mid-size trucks have plenty of capability in terms of towing and payload for me so from there it was simple decision to focus on the mid-size options.

@@two-face1041 They will both keep value. Colorado's are doing very well right now in resale. There's more demand than supply right now in the midsize market hence all 3 newer options will maintain their value well.

Carl Ryan the title of the video is the best mid-sized truck. Not which specific truck we borrowed is better. Obviously the gmc isn’t paired up fairly if they aren’t using the best preforming version of it. Seems unfair to give the win to ford when clearly he stated the gmc tows more when equipped properly

Big Bossman some key differences between the other world market rangers and North Americas. Ford says they changed much of the frame and suspension not to mention drivetrain. Quite a thorough change, and just like the Colorado which was also offered elsewhere as early as 2011-2012.

No point comparing the Canyon Mall Terrain to the FX4... You should compare the most off-road worthy trims of all midsize manufacturer offerings in the US. FX4 ranger, TRD Pro Tacoma, Colorado ZR2, and Frontier Pro 4x. There will be one clear winner in that line up.( hint, it's not the tacoma ). Until the Ranger Raptor comes to the US, the Gladiator is available and doesn't fall apart at the welds, then the ZR2 will continue to be the best midsize offoader
